I suspect that they're afraid their servers can't handle an influx of ten thousand beta testers. Not a good sign, this close to ship date.
I've been in lot's of beta before, this doesn't mean anything. I've played in tons of games with ultra smooth betas and total failure on launch, and other with bad connection in beta and smooth release. It's too early to call it.
gee, it sure would have been nice to allow my game to patch BEFORE the servers go live for your TINY window of playtime.
You're right, it is pretty nice. I patched over night last night.

You know, I bet this is to keep server population down a little bit to help them get their shit together. They just like doubled or tripled the number of accounts and so this is a stress test on a scale not seen before.
It's another Bill Roper game. It's a surprise he hasn't lied about having no funding to run the game yet, but after a year, he'll bail out and give the game to HanbitSoft.
That's probably the ONLY reason I can't see myself investing in ChO...
That said, if I wasn't out of work since... March... I might pick up the lifetime just because I used to be able to afford that kind of thing, and a lifetime sub would let me make it a casual game like TF2 instead of a content hunt.
This is the primary reason I'm considering the lifetime sub. I'd LOVE to be able to just jump in anytime I'm bored and screw around with alts or play around over the life of the game. That could really be worth the money.

I logged in several times last night and got nothing, so I guess fuck you
Hah, well I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties. If it's any consolation I cannot login right now.
I really need to scrounge up the money for that lifetime sub for the points others have said. The mental peace of not having to play 8 hours a day to get my money's worth would practically be worth it alone.
Akinos: I have a question about the Gamestop 0-level flight pre-order perk. Actually I don't have a question, I have every question - all we know is that you can fly right after character creation. Can you explain what this power is? I posted this in the preview forums but thought I'd ask here too in case my thread dies.
Anyone know Akino's name on the preview forums so I can PM him about it? Depending on how this power works it may drive me (screaming and kicking) to my local Gamestop to pre-order it there. The prospect of 2 (eventually 3) travel powers is hard to pass by.

His name is Akinos I think...just like here....but yes! This is really important in driving my decision!
For me it is either the D2D backpack, or this flight!

Awesome. PM sent as well as one to Akinos whoever that is.

Let me know what he says, either here or in beta forums (My beta forum name is Zinnar)
I wouldn't let the 0-level flight influence your decision. Even if it was the full on flight speed it wouldn't do much to speed up playing the tutorial.

Yea, but thematics.
I have a character who is a master of gravitational control, and I am still trying to work out his powers....having an "Anti-Graviton Flight" at least solves the travel power thing, if it IS a travel power and not like...a device.
If it IS a device, hell I still might take it, even though the D2D backpack is sweeeet

That's not why I want it. I want it IF it persists beyond the tutorial indefinitely. If it disappears when I leave the tutorial zone, or its an item with a number of charges or time limit then, like you said, it is less desirable and wouldn't influence my pre-order choice. But until I know that I can't make a decision.

I bought lifetime subscription (and I dont even have the game preordered yet!)
do to the fact that I loved COH, but cancelled my subscription for a year cause I was tired of it... I wanted to try it out again a few times, but don't feel like paying $15 just to play for a few hours.
Now I can play whenever the hell I want to.
Speaking of preorders, has anyone heard anything about preorders on steam?
I love steam, but I also like to play early. I am unsure of which I prefer more at this point... If I know steam would be getting a preorder within the next couple weeks I will buy from them, otherwise I just may go to D2D.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've asked this a couple times, but haven't heard a peep from anyone. So, I believe the answer is that no one knows. I find this a tad odd considering Steam has it as "coming soon" and has a page for it, but its possible (read: my pure speculation) that they didn't originally plan for it to be released through steam and had signed some deal through Direct2Drive to not have pre-orders through any other digital distributor.
My plan is to give it till next weekend, and if there is still no word about a pre-order through Steam, I'll be getting it through Direct2Drive.

Sorry for the lack of replies (to this thread, and PMs), as you can imagine we are all in full on crazy work mode.
Level-0 flight: The pre order item is a device. As such, it persists outside of the tutorial but cannot be ranked up like other travel powers.
Bill Roper (This is the only thing I will say on the subject, sorry): He is a great guy and has been nothing but good for this company.
Thanks for all your feedback guys. I can't respond to everything but I do READ everything in this thread and in both of my PM boxes.
Woo! I assume there are no restrictions to the power, as in it won't run out of uses or time, since you didn't mention it. That has made my decision. Knowing you are busy feel free to answer this next one whenever; Does it animate differently then regular fly? Thanks for the answers!
So whats the deal with this fileplanet beta? Fileplanet says the test is starting today, but it is not available for signups or download. Is this offer exclusively for pre-order customers?

Just a device? Well I'm good then, thought it was like an actual new travel power, not just a backpack of sorts like CoX. I can live a few slow levels through the tutorial to get my awesome travel power.

Yeah, I am kinda getting tired of hearing about Roper too. It isn't a constructive venue for inquiry.
I have plenty of OTHER questions, but Bill isn't on my radar.

...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
I got the flight pack to:
1. Get around the tutorial quicker (there's a lot of running around in COH's Outbreak)
2. Supplement my other travel powers (jetpacks and even the jump pack in X are invaluable all the way to 50 if you decide to go with Super Speed)
Of course, it's possible that these things aren't issues in CO. But there was nothing else especially compelling in the other preorder packages for me.
I'm also toying with the idea of going with the lifetime subscription, but I want to actually play the game first and see. Beta can't start soon enough.
Is there an option to have a cane? Or a staff or something? I made a halfway passable Alex (no eyelash options, though. Surprising given the multitude of facial sliders), but he lacks a cane for his evil... er heroics.
This is post-brainwashing Alex, obviously, he's been reformed (or has he?).

As long as you are talking about beta access because the way they are phrasing this is its a DISCOUNTED lifetime sub. So after launch it will likely go up. LoTRO did that too. $199 to $299.
So you can sign up for lifetime before you even buy or pre-order the game? Are you sure you even need to buy the game after getting the life sub then?
Ya, if you go to the main site, on the right side it says "Discounted rate for lifetime subscription, click here"
So clicked there, logged in with my COX username/password.
Clicked on Get a lifetime subscription, entered in CC details, and it said order confirmed.
When going through the steps, it does say something like "A retail box, or digital subscription is still required to play"
And when I log into my account it says
Champions Online Lifetime Pending Retail
I ended up making yet another character during the last couple hours of todays short test. I look forward to playing them again on Friday(And hopefully Saturday and Sunday). I will post an image of them later when Rate my Champion has them up, but they are an ice cream themed(Ice cream emblem and neapolitan colored) hero named Brainfreeze who will eventually have Ice and Psychic powers. They are amusing, running around freezing people in pink ice.

Isn't that just your character with a goatee? Possibly another goatee stacked on top if he already has a goatee?
It also changes his dominant hand when he writes.
