Of course, just wondered why the same argument had been carried over the to bitching thread.

Again, it's not an argument, and the reason is simple. I got curious over the topic based on the discussion in the bitching thread, and came to the question thread to ask the question. The two things are related sure, but it's not actually the same discussion twice.

Well it doesn't actually say where/when the enchantments were put on the hammer (or were explained), so I guess it doesn't have everything I need to know.

Nevermind, it's no big deal I was just curious.

I would reckon the enchantments and stuff were put on Mjolnir by Odin after Thor was kicked down to earth after Odin beat the crap out of him for having a temper tantrum like in the last part of Fraction's Thor one-shot. He needed a good person to help host Thor on earth, so making it mimic Excalibur helped Thor learn humanity when Donald Blake showed up.

That's just how bad Loeb's writing is. It can't be contained to one thread here. It has to spread out like a disease.

Apparently though part of Thor's early training was to see how high he could lift the hammer each time (i.e. seeing how close to being 'truly worthy' he was) so it must have been before he was banished.

So because of the Hope character in X-Men, I started thinking about all the messianic characters in the Marvel Universe and DC Universe who have, at one time or another, been entrusted with great destinies regarding the fate of the world or universe. The only one I can think of is Aztek, though.

So, can anyone help me out with some names and the inevitable fates of the characters? Basically, I'm wondering how often the plotline arises and what happens to the characters once their destiny is fulfilled/their popularity wanes.

Mr. Immortal's fate is kinda odd
The origin of this power may have been that Deathurge (a sort of Angel of Death character) took an interest in him when he was young, or perhaps Deathurge took an interest in him because this potential was already there. Deathurge once explained to Mr. Immortal that he is a mutant, but not Homo s. superior, the traditional Marvel mutant who has simply taken the next step in evolution, but rather a man who has evolved past death itself, and is therefore Homo s. supreme. He has been told that he will be around until the end of the universe itself, to be revealed at the end its final secret.

That was the unpublished ending - EPIC magazine was cancelled before the last segment of the story was produced, and Byrne was never given a chance to finish it.

Mr. Sinister genetically engineered Nate Grey to be crazy powerful so he could save the world from Apocalypse and their were messiah allusions to both him and Cable at different points. Sinister didn't realize that the only thing needed to beat Apocalypse is a stiff breeze.

Now, now. A stiff breeze only works if Apocalypse is recovering from the last ass-kicking he had. Normally you need a stiff breeze and a menacing glare.

no no, you need a stiff breeze bred from the genetic stock of jean grey and scott summers. Alternatively a wet cloth or a mop of any kind from the same source would also work.

So I just finished Secret Invasion, Messiah Complex, and started TDKSA

    1) Secret invasion was pretty cool, does this lead to the thing where Tony Stark is the only man with the registered identities of the heroes on it?

    2) Messiah complex - how is that Baby scotts, and how does it end up in Alaska? Also, I was reading the big trade paperback thing, so I'm guessing the art stlye changes in the last 20 pages or so to an Anime style because that particular portion of the story took place in a different book? I can't not look at mystique and her Dog Anime face.

    3) The Dark Knight Strikes again is the worst looking thing I have seen ever. Why does it look like this?

When most people think of Frank Miller's art, what they're really thinking of is Frank Miller plus Klaus Janson. DKSA was 100% Miller (and in some cases, rushed, if I'm remembering correctly - DC solicited some of the issues way way way before they were done, in typical DC Editorial fashion).

So something I always been kinda curious about. Is there a specific reason why DC doesn't seem to focus so much in the TPB market as Marvel? With marvel you can usually rely on them releasing the TPB of a story arc within six months of it ending. DC doesn't do that often..and it seems a crap shoot trying to find some of their old stuff collected.

I think their official position is that they're in the business of making monthly comics, and servicing direct market retailers.

    Which is retarded.

I just picked up the Power Girl TPB, which collects the first arc of the new series, and the new Batgirl TPB is due out in June, I think. They released a hardcover of Batman and Robin, but I don't buy hardcovers, so I'm waiting for that to soften up before I snag it. Gotham City Sirens TPB is coming out soon, as well. I'm not seeing where there is a lack of trades, at least not in the current Batman world.

It's not that there are no DC TPBs at all, it's how they release them. For instance, there are six or seven issues of Green Arrow that were omitted from the TPBs. Blue Beetle, which wrapped up a while ago, and went to a back-up strip which has also finished up, has its last TPB solicited for December of this year. The issues of Outsiders between Dixon's run and Tomasi's were never collected. And so on.

Conversely, Marvel's much better about finishing out an arc or mini-series, and then having it in some collected format no more than a few months later.

For DC's trades, do they still use the paper that feels like a newspaper for their pages? Or have they switched over to the glossy feeling pages yet?

They went glossy, but Vertigo still publishes their stuff on the pseudo-newsprint. Which I actually don't mind, as the cost tends to be considerably lower.

Some of the older stories collected are still in that pulp paper (like the just released Morrison/Millar Flash stories), but basically everything done 2005 and on is glossy.

By the by, it blows my mind that just a few years ago when I started buying comics again, they were $2.50 and printed on the pseudo-newsprint. I could go to the store and pick up eight comics for around twenty bucks. Then they jumped to $3.00, and all the paper went glossy. Now most are $4.00.

I don't want to start a big pricing rant again, but still, it's funny to think about how irritated I was by the fifty cent jump, even when it was causing a tangible benefit.

Marvel is tons better at putting out trades on somewhat of a schedule, I'll agree. You can count on them to wrap up an arc or series and then have it waiting for you in trade form within 6 months. Even stuff no one really cared about ends up in trades in a timely manner. I've only recently gotten into DC, and only select titles, so my scope might be a bit narrow.

Since there are a lot of people who trade wait on stuff, are there any plans to put out trade exclusive books? Instead of every month, just put out a book every six?

And it kind of sucks, because the OGNs have 20-50 less pages than a standard hardcover or trade, but will be going for the same price.

Meanwhile, Marvel and DC have been slowly increasing trade and paperback prices for some of their series.

I usually get my trades from TFAW's nick and dent sales, or from online retailers (Amazon, Midtown) that rarely sell them at cover price. I got pretty much all of the House of M trades for 6 bucks a pop.

I've been doing that as well for the last year and a half, but it still kind of sucks, because the increases will even carry down that far.

I'm really going to start tiering back soon, I think.
