Hi, does anyone think their should be more free games? I do. I think, games that are atleast 6-8 years (and failing games from around our years) old should be free. Doesnt anyone thing that Red Alert 2 or Tiberian Wars should be free? what about Rise of Nations? Age of empires 2? Return to Castle Wolfenstein? Bf 1942? Quake 1-2?the Diablo series (not counting 3)? Heck, i think even Halo for PC (even though its not the most important contribution to the pc gamer) should be a free download by now. What more money could they make for being sold in retail or online stores? I think an advertisement ingame or something else that could bring a little revenue to the games makers' pockets, so we could get a classic game. Does anyone else think so?
"Were not retreating, were advancing, towards FUTURE victory"
I also think your sister should give me a handjob and I should be given a government check for one billion dollars.
Six to eight year old games still make money, especially during a re-release or expansion cycle. Look at id software.
Unfortunately publishers and developers don't finance games as an act of philanthropy. They are businesses and no business will actually make money giving games away for free.

What more money? The money from the sale. That's what money. And those games are so old they were never intended to have in game advertisement. Even if it was possible to somehow shoehorn in game advertisement into them (Pepsi billboards on the AoE 2 buildings... awesome), it would cost more for the programmers time to do that than they'd make on games that old.
this is not the same thing, im not saying all games should be free, im saying some games from a long time ago. Dont u think that maybe 60 percent of gamers are looking for the newer thing?

But I mean, what makes you think companies owe it to us to give us free games? I went out and bought Starcraft and Baulders Gate II this year. Those games are "old".
Games are "free" enough as it is. You know what I'm talking about.
No, but it doesn't stop the fans and pirates from trying.
Even beyond that, there are plenty of great, free games available online. Check out the Dwarf Fortress thread, for example. Or the new Roguelike thread that started up recently and is going strong. Don't like the old ASCII graphics? Grab a tileset. And there are also free games with some beautiful graphics. Dyson comes to mind, for example. The OP mentioned Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Well, how about Enemy Territory, that's RtCW multiplayer on crank. Or hell, spend twenty bucks on a Source Engine game, then get all the killer mods you can shake a stick at. There is plenty of quality, free stuff out there.

I disagree with the idea that value degenerates with time. Casablanca on DVD costs just as much as other DVDs, so I don't see why old games should be seen as worthless.
Although I might agree with the claim that games are too expensive.
I think that there should be less free games. Taking a commercial game and releasing it for free devalues it as a commodity, but it also devalues all other games. Regardless of the demand for it, the cost of development, or any other factors, the existance of another similar game which is free, lowers the willingness of people to pay for it. Copyright exists for a reason, and it is so that creators have a motivation to continue to sell their work. Steam, Virtual Console, etc etc have shown that people are willing to pay for old games - good games don't become less fun over time.
They DO however, need to actually make sure these old games are still available for sale in some form. I'm looking at YOU, Lucasarts!
I hear ADOLF HITLER and NAZIS wanted the very same thing.

Unless I'm mistaken, CS 1.6 is still selling better than some current major retail releases. Ditto for Starcraft and Diablo II. And I'm pretty sure GoG is making bucketloads of scratch.
Also: When a post around here contains typos and/or grammatical errors, it's going to get mildly ridiculed. Harshly, yet lovingly. When the OP of a thread around here contains typos and/or grammatical errors, the love part stops. When the title of a thread around here contains typos and/or grammatical errors, someone is about to get fucking lynched.

Less than a year ago CS 1.6 had more players than CS:S, and these days it's still the second most played game on Steam.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that it still sells well.
I'd rather have games stay alive (at appropriately reduced prices) and continually supported for future hardware.
Also, having old games on sale can tell a publisher that there's still a demand for a franchise. There's a lot of abandoned stuff out there and the people in charge are frankly oblivious that people wouldn't mind more, or would like to give them monies.

That... That means 40 percent will still pay for it. That is tens of millions in America alone.

I don't know if it's still true or not, but at one time, CS 1.6 servers used more bandwidth than SPAIN.

Speaking of, CS:S is pushing 5 years old now and I don't believe it's ever missed a month in Steam's top ten sellers.
Pretty much any old games that I wanted to play (even ones that have been released as free), I would pay for, and I would do it with a smile on my face.
Especially older ones through digital distribution, because it's pretty much dirt cheap. While we don't get any free on consoles, direct your eyes to the Xbox Live Marketplace and, more prominently (because they specialize more in straight-up ports of older games), the Wii Virtual Console and the PlayStation Store. Games have been released on all three of these that would have cost you an arm and leg through Internet sales and auctions. Not only that, the minimal asking price makes it much easier to swallow and gets the word of the games out to a larger (and new) audience while putting money back into the developer's and publisher's pockets.
This year alone I bought Metal Gear Solid, Suikoden, Fallout, and Duke Nukem 3D and I couldn't have been the only one. It's much smarter for a developer to put their older games online for download at a cheaper price than just release it for free, because there are always plenty of people that were late to the party and would willingly pay money to get in on what they missed. And hell, people will buy something more than once if they can have it on another system or just without a disk. Not everyone who buys off Good Old Games, Wii Virtual Console, PSN store, etc. is a late adopter. There's just too much money to be made from even 20+ year old games like Mega Man and Super Mario Bros. 3 to give them up for free.
OK it has been proven to me by many people that I am a complete idiot in this subject that I don't know all the facts about it. I feel like ive been made a fool on the forums, and next time I will try my hardest to make a thread, or comment about something I know about. Im sorry and the thread is closed.

Without even looking at the downloadable games, on consoles. Which would be a very easy pick, but it's already been mentioned to great length. The Sega Genesis collection has sold a million over all platforms, Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill both had collections released on the PS2 and many classic RPGs from the PS1 are being re released on the PSP.
Trebz is also 100% correct. This year, i've bought Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Deus Ex and Max Payne 1&2. None of these for the first time.
Though i will give some credit to the idea. Some old console games, out of print. Are reaching ridiculous prices on ebay. With not one penny now reaching the developers. At least that i'm aware of. It's not fair on the people who just want to enjoy an older title, who would happily pay what was rrp. Now to see, because it's a cult game, or had a poor number of prints. It's the price of a fucking console. It doesn't happen to movies or albums. If some of these titles were free, the creators would still be making the same amount. But at least it would stop others making stupid amounts off them.
But i still dont expect, old games to become free. Just because they're old. I wouldn't expect the godfather movies to be available for free. Itunes would be pretty fucked, if people expected old music to become free also. As long as i'm not being exploited, i'll happily buy old classics. But god. Sometimes when i'm trying to get a hold of some games here in the UK, i really do pray old games would become free.
