Email RP Formats?

I have a couple college friends that have expressed interest in starting a 3-player email RP. We discussed it a bit and decided we will use a sci-fi theme of our own creation.

The hard part, however, is finding a good format to use for email. We have made one attempt, which died after about 10 turns, in which we realized we were basically just telling a chain story. We want to add a bit more game elements and RP elements. The idea is to make it more of a game and less of a story.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get a simple 3 player email based RP going?

What RPG system are you using? It helps to know what kind of rules are involved to devise ways to facilitate them.

We don't really have a rules system. It needs to be very simple so it can be done from work.

If there aren't any rules, doesn't that make it a chain story? Just roll d6's based on a six level difficulty scale. If you want, use six point characters with Social, Physical, Mental attribute of 1-4 to modify the roll.
Use your snap judgement to determine appropriate attribute and difficulty and the rest is RP.

    Example of Character and Play:

Joe the SPACE Doctor (6 points)
    Social 2
    Mental 3
    Physical 1

Joe performs NUCLEAR surgery on a doomed ALIEN patient: difficulty 5, roll 1d6 add to mental (3), 5 or higher? Success!

Joe shoots a LASER gun at a stationary target: difficulty 2, roll 1d6 add to physical (1), 2 or higher? Success!

Joe dodges a PROTON bullet, opposed physical rolls, defender wins ties.

    And so forth.
