So I just bought an iPhone.

And now I want to know what I have to catch up on!

What are the apps and customizations and so forth that I should be jumping on and making use of? What should I know, as a new iPhone owner? What is there to take advantage of that I might not know about?

I am massively ignorant of smartphones and their ilk in general, so treat me like a babe in the woods.

I'm brand new to the iphone scene as well,
    but in the last week
Tap Tap Revenge and Paper Toss have been my best friends.
also the remote app that apple makes to control itunes over wifi is AWESOME.

Flight Control is a great time-waster.
Pocket God is kind of entertaining although it's getting a little old. Worth the $0.99 though.
    Pandora is awesome.
If you are a baseball fan the MLB At Bat app is well worth the $10.
Amazon's app is pretty good if you buy lots of stuff from Amazon.
    Shazam is really cool.

You ought to stumble across much greatness just from normal usage. IMO the highest values apps are the 1st party ones that come on the device (safari, sms messaging, googlemaps, and voicemail).

Didn't really use 3rd party apps much. Want to try out the VNC client but haven't gotten around to it.

    Edit: Pandora is awesome.

FYI: if you press and hold over an app button they will start to jiggle and you can move then around as you want. press home to stick them back. BUY A PLASTIC SCREEN COVER. they're expensive for what they are, but it will keep your screen from getting a gouge from keys or something. better safe than sorry.

as far as games go, i personally like Lux DLX (its risk) and Top 3 Solitaire. Get this solitaire since it has klondike, free cell, and spider all in one. Most only sell each mode seperately.

Games: UnblockMe is a fun block-moving game. There's a couple out there, and this one is the best (despite not being the first) since it comes with something like 1600 levels. My wife has a ton of freebie games on hers, which you can pretty much just pick out by going through the store and seeing what strikes your fancy. Always check for free/demo versions before buying.

Useful Stuff: Discover lets your iPhone work as a wifi-based thumb-drive. The Kindle App is awesome if you like reading. Try out a free book to see if you like it.

First thing I did was buy a screen cover. I have lots of keys in my pockets.

I'm upgrading to the 3.0 software right now, as well, although I've never used iTunes.

Don't buy ringtones, make them. I use the free Audacity.

a friend of mine was tilting his iphone sideways and getting all sorts of neat results last year. mine is updating right now, but nothing seemed tiltable. what's the deal? is it only specific apps, I guess?

So I now have 3 pages of apps, how do I adjust which page an app shows up on? I know how to organize them, I can't seem to flick one to a previous page.

    Also thanks Robothero.

Some other apps I like that he didn't mention KPCC (LA's NPR affiliate) and KROQ. GeoDefense (awesome tower defense game). Stanza (offers some free e-books), Yelp and FML (fuck my life - funny stories). Also Pandora if you don't use LastFM

edit: Just figured out you can't flick to a full page.

if you press on the app icon and hold it down it will start to wiggle around which means you can move it. hit the home button again to turn off movement

If you are into crosswords at all, the NYT Crosswords app has every single day's Crossword back to 1998, and the new one is uploaded daily. I use it as much as I use the music app.

The solitaire game called Sol Free is pretty much the best thing ever. And it's free.

That switch above the volume controls on the left is the ringer on/off. I learned this a tad late.

Also AT&T has a nice app that allows for more iPhone friendly account viewing. You can even pay your bill with it!

You can customise what the home button does on a double-tap, but I don't know why anyone would set it to anything other than the iPod. When you have the headset in, a single click of the mic/button will answer/drop calls, and pause/resume the iPod. A double tap skips a track and a triple tap goes to the previous one. In text entry, double-tapping the space bar will produce a period.

its nice to set it to phone favorites for those of use who only call a few people most of the time, but have a lot of contacts. though if the ipod app is running, a double tap always brings up the mini controller that links to the ipod app itself
really, its more silly to link the "normal" double click to the ipod app, because usually when listening to music you're not using the other parts of the phone anyways.
if the double tap didnt go to ipod control when playing music then you would have a better point

    other cool shortcuts:
When on any page that isnt the first, clicking once takes you back to the 1st page
When on the first page, clicking home takes you to spotlight

Apple's Remote app is phenomenal if you've got a MacBook and iTunes.
