Waltz with Bashir is a 2008 Israeli animated documentary film written and directed by Ari Folman. The film was conceived as a journey in search of Folman's lost memories from the 1982 Lebanon War
In 1982, Ari Folman was a 19-year-old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. In 2006, he meets with a friend from his army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find that he does not remember a thing from that period. Later that night he has a vision from the night of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the reality of which he is unable to tell. In his memory, he and his soldier friends are bathing at night by the seaside in Beirut under the light of flares descending over the city. Folman rushes off to meet another friend from his army service, who advises him to discuss it with other people who were in Beirut at the same time in order to understand what happened there and to relive his own memory. Folman converses with friends, a psychologist and the reporter Ron Ben-Yishai who was in Beirut at the time.

So I watched this in Bluray today and it is breathtakingly gorgeous. This movie is so fucking good. It's so god damned depressing.

    what

    From wiki
The animation, unique with its dark hues representing the overall feel of the film, uses a unique style invented by Yoni Goodman at the Bridgit Folman Film Gang studio in Israel. The technique is often confused with rotoscoping, an animation style that uses drawings over live footage, but is actually a combination of Adobe Flash cutouts and classic animation.[5] Each drawing was sliced into hundreds of pieces which were moved in relation to one another, thus creating the illusion of movement. The film was first shot in a sound studio as a 90-minute video and then transferred to a storyboard. From there 2,300 original illustrations were drawn based on the storyboard, which together formed the actual film scenes using Flash animation, classic animation, and 3D technologies.

American localization is really awful. And here I thought that anime was finally making a breakthrough! I'll still see it, but I'm really hoping it won't be a disappointment. At least Ponyo sounded like she should sound. And she pronounces Sosuke's name right. I'm just glad I saw the original first ;P

I really enjoyed the rotoscoping in A Scanner Darkly. There were moments where it was utterly surreal...things would shift...expressions would distort. It was always interesting for me to watch and look at things not in the focus of the shot.

Is A Scanner Darkly on Blu Ray yet? it seems like it would really benefit from that format.

Also Bashir not out on DVD until August??

I'm from Israel, did my 3 years army time, and I even participated in our latest war. But watching that movie still made a strong impression on me. My experience with the army here and the war were very different, and yet similar. He did a good job.

The funny thing is, a lot of people here in Israel blamed Ari and the movie for being very left wing. Did you guys feel it was biased toward a certain end of the political spectrum? Perosnaly, I thought he did a pretty good job at just describing what happened over there.

I especially liked the first scene, with the dogs.

yeah it was a fun movie
    I LOVED
when the guy waiting at the phone booth finally got his call

Also: Hotel Rwanda and Waltz with Bashir on the same evening would probably make one depressed for ages.

I didn't really see any bias either, it was just showing what happened. I wish I could play this movie on my PC but it doesn't support Bluray. The most striking images for me were the ones in the cities. That part about the amateur photographer whose barrier that held back reality broke was amazing. The horses. D:

I fucking loved this movie. It was one of the few times where I could safely say I had not seen anything like it before and was still blown away.

I was upset that it didn't win best foreign film. But I hadn't seen the other nominated ones. I just wanted it to be recognized for something
