That and the only people that gave a shit about Johnny Cash up until he covered that terrible NIN song were our dads.

Unless you lived down in the South then your dad probably didn't care either.

    This is pretty much true.

I knew maybe two people who had heard of more than Folsom Prison Blues before he covered Hurt, and then he dies and suddenly everyone I know thinks he's the greatest ever.

Not to take away his importance to country music... but at the end of the day, country music has raped itself into irrelevance anyway. Kind of a pointless visionary.

Oh yeah right, everyone, and I mean everyone had heard "Ring of Fire".

Of course, he didn't write that either.

I have to say this is really classy of MTV. No news breaks, no shitty reality shows, just videos and a couple commercials.

They kinda owe him... MTV wouldn't have been shit without Thriller.

I wonder if they will give Dire Straits the same play time as well when Knophler dies as he also aided their station.

    I hope so.

He certainly wrote some pop songs. And had some real psychological/emotional problems. And he's dead.

Also he didn't write Thriller the song, but he did write 4/9 songs on Thriller the album. He wrote more of his later works.

But the fact that he probably molested kids and was a terrible father from all accounts kinda kills the nostalgia.
