</3 CCAPP.exe

I have no idea when this started, but every once in awhile, CCAPP.exe appears and uses up ~99% of my CPU and lags the shit out of everything else. Recently it's been taking ~50% though. Google says that it's some norton process so I doubt it's a virus/spyware. Help would be much appreciated.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
1GB RAM

sucks when it happens in the middle of a scrim ):

It's part of Norton Antivirus. Incidentally, you should ditch Norton Antivirus, it's become a bloated piece of junk, and it's just not worth the ongoing cost to keep it updated. You can get free antivirus programs that do the same job but are much more lightweight, such as Avast! or AVG.

While I don't have the same 99% usage problem (the Friday Night [prime time] virus scans suck ass), I do have problems with Norton ceasing to respond on shutdown.

Can anyone recommend Sireath and myself a good firewall/antivirus combo that doesn't suck?

I use Antivir and the Nvidia Firewall. I'm not sure how good the firewall is, but Antivir is great.

Edit: never pay for an antivirus program. if you surf the web with wisdom (don't download risky attachments, keep away from porn and warez sites, etc) then you should be ok, and never need an antivirus software.

Kaspersky is the only way to go for antivirus software. In every comparison it always comes out on top for effectiveness.

    The following is opinion:

    The best firewalls are hardware.
The best anti-virus is not doing things that will get you infected.

For antivirus, my recommendations are above. For firewall, I recommend anything near the top of the list in this personal firewall leak test. I've been using ZoneAlarm for years, it's quality, and free for personal use.

I've used AVG Free edition for years, and as of February I'll be buying five licenses of AVG Pro for my network.

Other than that, McAfee makes a decent product (I used to hate them, but I've used their products in two different corporate environments now, and it changed my mind).

    I still hate Symantec though.

You know that you can set when it does a full system scan, right? You also know that you can turn them off completely, right?

Uh oh. Then how can I uninstall and completely get rid of Symantec? And what should I replace it with?

use their uninstaller, and delete every trace from your registry, also the leftover files it leaves you.

ESPECIALLY NORTON GOBACK! oh god, how I hate it.

install for antivirus: Antivir or AVG
for spyware: Spybot and adaware, Spyware Terminator
for firewall: Comodo or Zone Alarm is also good
    browser: Firefox.

    all free, all good.

For real. I have to tear out the preloaded Symantec crap that comes on the PCs my Dad orders for his home office, otherwise I can never make it let me connect remotely using VNC, RDP or SSH to do support. The shit just doesn't seem to work, at least not in any sense that I understand the verb "to work".

I always find it kind of amazing that companies like Dell still preload Norton crap. Wonder how much Symantec pays for that kind of exposure? So a year after you buy a new Dell, you get a popup from Symantec saying "Hi, give us 50 bucks or you'll be raped by viruses and spyware!" Not that Norton does a very good job of keeping a lid on that stuff, but then the average user probably isn't aware of the options. Pretty sweet racket for Symantec, anyway.

and thing is, pretty much any anti virus software only protects you after you're infected, and by the time you clean it out, the damage has already been done. the real time protection only detects viruses that it already knows, but there are new viruses pretty much every day nowadays, so there's always those that are going to infiltrate your system, regardless.

if you must really use antivirus, use the ones that have been posted in this thread.

like I said, best way to protect your PC: wise browsing habits.
don't open attachments that seem dodgy
don't frequent porn or warez sites
    etcetera etcetera.

go to run>regedit.exe then choose LOCAL MACHINE>SOFTWARE>NORTON

delete all entries. they should come up to the right.
