I, for one, hope there is an improved creator in ME2 and that importing Shepard will allow is to make modifications. I'm happy enough with my 'canon' Shepard, but there's little things about it that bugs me...
Preston Watamaniuk mentioned over at the BioWare forums that they are hoping to make it possible to tweak imported characters before venturing forth in ME2.

Pretty much the sloppiest Commander I've ever seen, and I've worked with the end-of-career crowd in their twilight military years.
Hmmm another thing to notice about ME, why isn't there a LCdr? Why is a senior officer (captain is just below flag officer status iirc) commanding so small a ship? And how in the hell is the XO leading the assault teams? Oh well hurf hurf drywall science fiction etc.

been awhile since last playthrugh, but don't you get promoted from lt-cmdr after eden prime?
as for small size of ship, i'd note that it's a cutting-edge stealth ship, perfect for nihlus to observe shepard during delicate or covert missions. beyond "oooh shiny tech," normandy was partially designed to be springboard for first human spectre. suggests rationale for caprain on small, use of shepard.

No, you're always a Cdr. The red stripe on your suit signifies the rank of commander, I read somewhere. Oh well, A Wizard Did It.

I thought (could be wrong) that Kaiden was promoted to Lt. Cmdr.?
Edit: Besides, it's entirely likely that the chain-o-command has change in at least a couple ways over the last couple hundred years. (My version of "A wizard did it!")

The one that didn't involve intergalactic police men or ancient evil space robots. A couple of the characters ate bugs, if that helps narrow it down... which did you see?

Nah, I think Kaiden is a Lieutenant, not Lt. Commander. If I remember my ranks right, a Lieutenant in the Navy is equivalent to a Captain in the Army. Sheppard is a Commander, or the equivalent of a Lt. Colonel in the Army.
Actually if you want to get picky, Sheppard and Kaiden are Marines, so they should have Marine rankings, which are the same as the Army.
The ranks never really bothered me in my playthroughs. Actually if I remember right, the Navigator on the Normandy was questioning why someone of Captain Anderson's stature was captain of the Normandy before Eden Prime.
my vague memory, again possibly wrong or changed pre-release, was that enlisted people differentiated navy and marines, but once you got to officer level, it was all one group. so shepard started as a marine, rose up through ranks, and is now an officer, but can still wear his "i was special forces" armor like a medal.

I still want an upgraded version of that armor with N7 on it, I was sad when I ditched it like 10 minutes into the game.
The naval ranks haven't changed in hundreds of years, even going into space I doubt that the forces would invent new ranks. They're kind of conservative about their traditions. Oh well, A Wizard Did It.
And if they're using the naval ranks, it would suggest either a) the rank sounded cool or b) the 'marines' of the Alliance are done in a similar method to the canadian navy, where your boarding party are still naval people and have naval ranks. Only the helo crews on canadian ships have non-navy ranks, because they're air force.
EDIT Although they adressed Jenkins as corporal, which is a ground forces rank. Hrmm.
Interesting trivia: the helo pilots also get the only eight hours of undisturbed sleep per day on the ship, and don't have to participate in fire/damage control drills if they're sleeping.

Actually IIRC any upgraded version of that armour has the N7 logo and the red Commander stripe down the arm. I recall reading it on ME wiki, but I can't link you to it due to being at work.

The problem is just about every other human armor has better stats.

On a similar note, I'd love if there were differently colored versions of the same armor. Some of the traditionaly RPG color style armors (the bright yellow, pink, and blue) are almost always inferior to one of the camo scheme armors. And while the camo scheme is cool and all, I'd like to be able to play through with a different look every now and then without taking a hit to my armor's abilities.
Being able to buy a new paint job for any type of armor you already have (or at least being able to buy one of a couple different looks available for it) would be awesome.
I always used the Predator Armor until I got the Colossus armors. I think the Predator M X is the best Medium armor for the player, it has the Woodland Camo pattern. I think the best Light and Heavy armors for the player are the Colossus X ones. Glad I like the Red and Black color scheme. I do wish the other X level armors were anywhere near the Colossus and Predator L/M/H armors in stats, just so I could use them for variety sake. Right now though stuff like the Assassin X armor is more equivalent to a Colossus V armor, so it's not worth it.

I would kill a man if I could find heavy Colossus. I'm stuck with medium right now.
I suspect I won't find Colossus until my insanity run. Which is coming up
as soon as I can decide who dies on Virmire. I might save Kaiden since I have never saved him, but that thought makes me sad for Ashley's sisters.

Um, no.
As far as I'm aware, in the US at least, the Marine officers have the same rankings as the Army.
It goes something like 2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lt. General, General. Wikipedia seems to support me on this, so please correct me if I'm wrong here.

I dunno man, I think most of us here would be honored to be cut by a guy from BioWare. We'd probably use it to try to pick up chicks.
What version of the Lion King did you watch?

Well he was voiced by Jeremy Irons...

Well Bioware is a Canadian developer, so the Canadian Navy ranking system being used here sounds likely to me.

I'm rocking the merc X armour because it's the best medium armour I've found
yeah seriously. i kept rolling with that until i got colossus X and it was just too much of a statboost to ignore

I might be overthinking it.
