Oh look - it's slightly-dodgy Polish free digital distribution time again! This time on Impulse, but the Steam thread's as good a place as any. From the people who brought you Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and Speedball 2, comes Sins of a Solar Empire!

Register at http://www.cdaction.pl/seriale/ (Google translate helps, obviously), and choose honest-to-god legal CD keys for the games there. Only 2 work with digital distribution, however - Speedball 2 with Steam and Sins with Impulse. I can confirm that they both work, and that the wrath of the heavens hasn't yet descended on me (despite doing DMoM&M and Speedball months ago). Enjoy before they inevitably plug the leak!

I'd be all over this if it wasnt impulsive, i've wanted Sins for a long time but never bought it and I don't want to get tied to another service for one free game.

Free? Hell, Sins of a Solar Empire is more than worth an actual purchase. That is, if you don't value your time; hours will vanish into the game's gaping maw, and you won't know a day has passed until your stomach feebly reminds you that eating is required not to die.

    Tis' a good game.

Yeah, if you have a service for just one game, it kind of defeats the purpose of it.

After you download Sins, you never have to run Impulse again unless you want to patch it or re-download it. It lets you run games without the client.

I certainly am. The combat and research is already very compelling, but it'd be nice to be able to rely on computer allies not being traitorous bastards.

So how exactly is this legal? The only way I can see this working is if CDAction just really loves their readers and buys keys to give away... but that doesn't seem likely.

There isn't anything wrong with Impulse though, and it's not like Steam in that you need it after the game is installed. Just load up Impulse, download the game, and you can even uninstall Impulse afterwards if you like.

Man if he can't run Sins, I can't think of many other modern games he could possibly play. SoaSE was deliberately designed to maximise its playerbase, right down to how far they went with the visuals. It still looks good, but they purposely avoided trying to stress the system.

Oh, I didn't realize that. I can run most modern games at low settings. I just assumed Sins was resource heavy for some reason.

There's no single player campaign as such, but you can play a game with just other AI players. They tend to behave a bit erratically, but the Diplomacy expansion should fix that splendidly.

As I understand it, they have a print magazine that comes with a DVD, which has the software available on the linked page. Then, the readers are supposed to use said DVD with said CD keys to get games from the magazine.

The existence of digital distribution hubs adds a bit of a loophole in their system, which has been used for many a free game. Originally their site didn't even validate the e-mail addresses put into it, so they've increased security a bit, just not enough to stop people who probably shouldn't be getting keys out of their system.

It feels slow because you think it's an RTS

Fuck yeah Kotor on steam! It even works on my system unlike my kotor 1 and 2 discs

Hopefully they'll put up 2 soon, but for now I'm gonna do a Scout/Sentinel run. I always was either a guardian or a consular on my other runs

I'll only buy Kotor 2 on Steam if it that mod that puts in all the stuff that got left out works.

Does the mod that puts in all the stuff that got left out alter the main executable? If not, it should work fine.

I have no idea. I don't own Kotor 2, nor would I know the answer to that if I did have it.

One tip for Sins newcomers is to turn off the pirates. 'Cause they can seriously wreck your shit if you have no idea what you're doing, and they'll be attacking you constantly.

Otherwise it's not actually that hard to get into. Just think of it as a 4x instead of an RTS.

They can be a great asset if you do know how to use them though. I like to use them as a tool to soften up enemies just before attacking, distract enemies and attack them while they're occupied, or simply as a way of building up experience points for my capital ships.
