Series of Tubes (A lack of internet story)

Short story: I can access my network, (which has internet) but not get onto the internet.

Long story: I've changed my configuration a whole bunch trying to fix this sucker, and nothing seems to work. It was also it worked-an-hour-ago, and-now-it-doesn't deal.

Please help. It's a laptop running Windows XP Home.

I want to say I've seen something like this, my computer did lose internet connection, but I don't remember if my computer could see the router.

Might try googling WinSock, something might have gotten messed up in there. That's what fixed my problem the last time my computer hated me, at least.

I would try resetting all of your network hardware - I had problems like this on my cable connection - never figured out the problem, but resetting the cable modem, my router and rebooting my PC seemed to fix whatever hiccup was happening - this also might not be your issue... unless you're posting from another computer on the same network that CAN access the tubes?

Let me detail how messed up this is. I'm currently using Remote Desktop Connection to access another computer on the network (same one) to make this post. I've tried resetting my computer already. Several times.

I'll be shutting it down with a hammer soon.

Start -> run : type in "cmd"

    Type : ping www.yahoo.com

    What does it tell you?

    Type : ping 209.73.186.238

    What does it tell you.

Right click on the blue bar to get to the options and enable quick edit.

That way you should be able to copy paste.

You can't do that through remote desktop though.

Edit: I might pass out anytime soon so if I don't respond immediately, I will once I have a chance.

meiz: any thing beyond the router reads request timed out.

It seems to be a network issue, because now I'm on a new network and I'm not having the same issue.

What do you see if open a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and issue the following command:
    ipconfig /all

i'll have to revive the thread tomorrow, as I'm not on the same network (and the connection is now working on the other network). I'm pretty sure, it's not an IP conflict though, and i can reach router. I do not know if i have an outside IP on the network though, i'll have to check.

Well if the router is able to let one machine through and not the other, that is rather odd.

i've said this like 400 times already in other threads, but if you've got an ip issue, try resetting it to automatic...
    go to network connections

then, right click on your connection (be it wireless, or Ethernet), select properties

then you should get this window

    neeewwwwb.png

    so do those steps....

Under the "General Tab" select to obtain the IP and DNS servers automatically.

    Click ok, you'll be set.

    Hopefully that helps.

EDIT: I hope you all love my minimalist desktop.

Try hooking your computer directly to the internet. See if you're able to access as the only computer with internet access. No router, no switch, no nothing. Hook direct to your modem and let 'er rip.

    If it works, it's a router/switch/network problem.

    If it doesn't, it's a computer problem.
