Purple items can be put on AH, just not for a lot of silver. I usually aim for twice the sellback value.

    --

I've got the titles Vegetarian, Historian, Courageous, Feather-foe and Pork-chopper that I like better than Undying. I wish my kin would drop by Helegrod again, there are some fantastic titles to pick up there.

Vegetarian is easy enough: I got it without trying. Just eat a lot of different foods.

Pork chopper is also super easy, as long as you do all zones west of Moria.

I like these hidden deeds, they often make me laugh. I'm just doing something I must do anyway and all of a sudden you get a system message going "congratulation, you are now a vegetarian" :P

Undying's not even the best title in the survivor chain of titles, but it does have a sense of accomplishment (and luck) that goes with it.

If you've been to Moria, wary is a state of being! And yeah its easier to get undying now because you are like level 16 or 17 when you leave your starting area and with new improved Bree (my god I love the new bree quests they actually fucking make sense! Now if only they'd fix dol dinen!) you can do it. Though shame about your gf costing you 2868 I leveled 5 other guys before I got mine, so there is that.

Got my warden to 23 over the weekend, leveled so fast I unlocked my second class trait before I had a trait for it (hell this morning I finally got a decent racial trait as well). Loving the warden, though the gambits are a bit hard to get a feel for at the start.

That whole area is sucktastic (every quest is a god damn chain, you need to go down and back so fucking often and the bonespeakers are hell on earth). Seriously they fixed bree up something nice, they need to look into dol dinen, though I do like how the other troll quests from the elves got fixed, they changed the trolls into signatures, makes that whole chain a billion times easier.

Maybe it was because I was a burg and not a captain, but that assholes tent is so jammed pack full of guys and they respawn like a mother fucker, oh and don't try pulling him THE ENTIRE TENT COMES! I don't know how a group would do it other than a 6/6 of 60s or like 3 groups pulling that area.

On another note apparently Elf wardens are the weakest of the warden group, oh well I like my dude and fuck if I'm redoing him. Though every newbie should go through the Shire, if only so they can be lore appropriate and NEVER LEAVE THE GOD DAMNED SHIRE! Seriously I started the shire quests at 16 just for some traits, 12 hours later I was done, 12 FUCKING HOURS OF SHIRE QUESTS!

Every other starting zone needs like 40 quests to max their quest trait, not the shire 75! and thats like 20 or 30 shy of total!

I was thinking about giving the trial of this game a shot. does it let you roll on any server or are you limited to a 'trial' server?

also, how easy do you guys feel this game is to get started into, say if you'd never touched an MMO before. I was thinking about trying to get my wife to give the game a shot. but i'm not sure she has good enough hardware to run it. her lappy is about 4 years old.

    Any server.

There's a really basic intro scenario for new players. Like, "Here is a quest where you learn to right click to loot" basic.

LOTRO is the casuals MMO, its a great intro, because a lot of the early quests (and more so now with some fixes) ease players into the fun of the game without a steep "ok fucker you're on your own now" mentality.

They have an intial tutorial, but past that there is a quest indicator (so you can see where you need to go on the map a fucking god send because in the past quest directions were vague as fuck). And you can even connect to the lorebook in game to look things up, though most of the time thats fing useless other than finding specific location traits.

LOTRO is more about player skill than equipment too, so learning how to play your class is paramount over being hardcore loot minded, though the loot and gear does help (obviously the better gear you have the better you can do things). I'd suggest if you are both starting out one of you be an explorer if only for money wood and ore sell for nice prices (silver especially). Class traits are another way the game teaches you how to play your class, they require you to use a skill a certain amount of times to unlock, and by the time you are done you get a fairly good handle on what that skill does.

Good starter classes are hunters, captains, guardians, and champions.

The 4 year old laptop could prove an issue though, I'd try the freeplay to see how it runs.

I'll look into that when i do the 10-day trial. I also have some co-workers who just started/resubbed this last weekend playing on silverlode... though it would be foolish of me to play there expecting to actually play with them as they'll probably not last too long at all.

another thing, the crafting looks fairly intricate in this game, what do you guys think of it? does having a craft and actively working at it behoove the player? or are you better off farming money to buy what you need from the AH and letting some other poor sod mess with crafting?

Depending on the server it's a bit better to craft yourself, you'll have to spend some non leveling time getting it up to par, but it'll pay off for other characters, and at the very least if you take explorer its easy to keep your resource gathering up to par and thats money in the mofoing bank mofo.

so if i was say... a Burglar with the Explorer profession, then i'd be able to make my own armor, and have all the metals/wood i'd need to get weapons crafted from a friendly weaponsmith (how common are weaponsmithes)?

also, if i made an alt and only got him to say... lvl 15, but just wanted him for farmin/cooking, is it possible to level that craft to supreme master? or will I need to lvl to be able to get to the NPC trainers?

it seems like an account with an explorer, tinker, and scholar would be in good shape for most of what the need/want.

Yeah as an explorer you could make your own armor and any one else who wants medium/light. Smiths depend on server if you went landroval I'm sure the guild as some that would love to make any of your stuff if you supplied mats.

Past a certain point you need to go horrible places to level up some crafting. Farmer can all be done in the shire, cooking has a couple that take you out to scary places.

Scholars take humanoid mob drops (and there are nodes near ruins but its mostly mob drops) and make them into potions (healing, power, status effect). They also make some crafting crit items and class items as well, but its mainly the potions.

I still think that place was what broke apart the previous incarnation of the PA guild on Landroval. It still ranks in my mind as one of the most classic drama moments i've had in an MMO to date, and that's after leading a guild group through wow raiding recently.

Who all's still around and playing from those days, anyhow? I never did drop the sub, and with the expansion price lower, I might start dinking around and finally get my LM past 37.

how necessary do consumables from cooking/scholar become in the endgame? is it like wow where everything is designed with the though that you will be using consumables to the fullest extent?

My level 55 Supreme Cook is very useful. On the other hand it does take a fair amount of time to farm all the ingredients for cooking and (at least on Nimrodel) there are not sufficient ingredients available at the AH to actually do cooking. So a Cook would either need to also have Farming (which works with Yeomanry) or you would need an Alt to do your own Farming.

My level 35 Metalsmith (mostly heavy armor, also tools for other professions) has also been very useful. The Metalsmith Guild Armor he builds is much better than pretty much all treasure drops or quest rewards. On the other hand my level 55 is also a Tailor and so far that's been pretty close to useless. The stuff he can make is usually worse than what he gets from quest rewards or on rare occasions only very marginally better. I'm not altogether sure what the difference is. Partly I think it's because he's not in the Tailoring Guild. Also Tailoring drops include both Medium and Light Armor, so he's got a fair number of good Single-Shot Light Armor recipes that do him no good at all. I don't think he's gotten any Single-Shot Medium Armor recipes -- just bad luck I suppose.

I've heard in the end game, the only really useful crafting professions are the consumable ones (which I think is pretty much just Cooking and Scholar) for self-consumption and the gathering professions (Farming, Prospecting, Foresting) mostly to gather and then sell to the auction house.

Maybe. If you are looking to try the game for free for ten days, nope, probally going to have to register a new account. If you're just looking to get the client, there's actually a number of places you can do that, but you can also do it by just registering for a new account, downloading the trial, then logging in with your old account. Though you will have to setup the payment stuff first.
