Is anyone else dissatisfied with the presentation of new Lookouts comic? Its a great style, and they are clearly talented artists, but compared to the original I feel it isn't as "good".
To the point: it seems hard to read, the environment and color scheme is to light, there isnt a whole lot of contrast to really set in an atmosphere. The Panel layouts aren't working for me either, and the ending is a bit ??? to me as well.
this is just my opinion, my particular taste for a drawing/coloring style may not be the same for everyone, I just want to see if it is just me.
When I heard who the guest artist was the other day, I went and looked it up. I couldn't read more than 3 of the comics because it gave me a huge headache between the color scheme and trying to decipher who was who, what was background, who was saying what and other things pertaining to what the hell was going on.
I can see how artistically it is interesting. I actually like her style. But not for anything involving story telling. Especially not a story I expected to be drawn by Gabe.
ah, my fault, im new here, didnt see anything in the places i DID look.
but yea, its almost difficult to figure who had been turn to stone, or what was happening in what order. I should look up some previous examples of the artist's work.
Yeah I seriously don't get the last two pensl. The bottom left panel with "I'm sorry, Boys" and then I think he is getting knocked over in the bottom right panel? Why is he just standing there with his hands on his hips in the bottom left panel? Eh. I didn't like it much at all.
The basilisk is standing behind the scoutmaster, and strikes him with his tail.
I think.
I do feel a bit cheated by the comic, as I was promised some awesome work of G&T, and instead got a dimestore knock-off. The guys responsible for this strip are fine artists and all, but it's not what I wanted to see. When I drop $10 to see Dark Knight, I'm going to be a wee bit pissed if I get shown The Godfather instead.
Also, I'm rather annoyed that they're calling it a basilisk yet showing a cockitrice.

If you look at the fourth panel, the blonde kid has the cartoon-surprise lines above his head. He's just seen the basilisk. He turns to stone (see panel five), the scoutmaster apologises and then he gets whacked in panel six.
The art of the guest artist comic is actually visually interesting. But when translated into this, it looks like a magic mushroom vomited on someones concept sketches. I can't decide if fatty is stone, or cowering behind a statue.

I think that, at a minimum, one of the boy lookouts also got turned to stone. Possible two of them, but it is really hard to discern.

Well I'm sure G&T will give you your money back if you aren't pleased with the comic. :P

I'm with you on this one.
edit: None of the boys have been turned to stone, the two that aren't immediately visible are hiding behind an existing statue and another boy's cloak, respectively. The only reason I know this is because it was being discussed in the chat thread. I initially interpreted it as like 1.5 new boy-statues too.

Look really closely at the end. One kid is hiding behind a stone boy, the other is hiding behind the ginger kid's cloak. It's really difficult to discern, it took somebody pointing it out to me before I saw it.
automata is going to be fully released as well yes? I didnt mind the pitch, i actually was more entertained with the jim comic, but maybe they can pull off a good noir story, so long as they remain at the helm.
if nothing else im sure G&T hear the reactions of the fans and are taking it into consideration. id like to see what comes of it.

With the art-style, the "kid" behind the ginger's cloak could easily be a flower..
Basilisk and cockatrice are actually the same (or similar) monsters depending on your mythology. Dungeons and Dragons has one as a zany multilegged lizard thing (that looks like he escaped from Chernobyl) and the cockatrice is usually a very angry lizard-chicken, but they have the same core mythological origin (and can be depicted in all sorts of ways).
As for the comic I can't say I liked it at all and was very disappointed. I loved the art and narrative style of the first comic. This one didn't have either.
That's where I'm at. The scout leader in this retains none of his interesting design from the first (you can't see the eyepatch or anything). And most of the boys bleed into each other if not for different colored hair it would be hard to tell them apart.
When does automata kick up? I was under the impression that too was supposed to be going this week?

It's not like I'm personally angry at G&T, and of course they have the right to do whatever they wish. But I went in expecting something awesome. Then at the last moment, we're told, "Oh, wait, we're not actually doing it after all." Lookouts, as drawn by Gabe, was beautiful and I was eager to see an entire series of strips in the gorgeous style and that gorgeous world. And now it's unlikely I will ever get that, even though we were originally told they would be doing all three ideas, because it's being subcontracted to some other folks.
And I'm a little sad over what I'll never get to see.

July during Comic con. I assume we'll be getting that instead of their usual con sketches.

I voted for Auto but was content with Lookouts until I saw the comic. It's really hard to look at and hurts my brain.
Yeah initially I was fine with either lookouts or Automata. Hell I would have prefered a clear winner either way if this is what Lookouts got done with. Either do one or the other, don't let some half assed deviant art person do what could have been a cool reoccuring universe like CTS.
I only hope that they get enough dissapproval they rethink this and do their own version of lookouts.

Unless I misread the Newspost, Gabe said he would love to one day sit down an do a Lookouts Graphic Novel, so there is still a chance they'll take t back over, right?
I get the feeling that Gabe and Tycho just decided they would rather make Automata, which is personally disappointing to me because I didn't care for Automata at all. Oh well, it's their comic and they can do whatever they want.
I will admit that I do like how the Basilisk's tail leads you into the last panel, even if it is unclear who exactly is getting walloped by it.

It is pretty interesting how the two monsters are related. Speaking of the DnD basilisk, I remember seeing a fairly old illustration of the cockatrice that had it as an eight-legged creature with a chicken's head.
I can't see how people have a problem with what's going on in the comic. In the bottom row of panels, from left to right:
1. The Scoutmaster has his back to the basilisk.
2. The kid with the knife is using his knife to create a reflection so that he does not look at the basilisk directly.
3. One child is quivering behind a statue, his arm is draped around it, you can also make out the top of the head.
4. The red headed child has his back to the monster and uses his cloak to hide his eyes.
5. The blond child is lying down and has his head to the ground.
6. The silhouette of the Scoutmaster is being knocked to the ground, by the basilisk's tail.
I really think the worst part is that the ginger kid's nose looks like a cock.
Now I cannot unsee it.

Ok and why is he apologizing to the scouts? I mean his intent was to show them how to kill the beast, and instead he gets knocked out by it. So uhh way to go champ.

Why is the scoutmaster apologising, though? And why is he doing it while striking a pose?
Somebody put forward a theory in the chat thread when we were talking about it that made sense to me: he's apologizing to the petrified kids, not the living ones. It makes sense, but the comic doesn't get that across at all.

Well his back IS turned to us. Maybe he whipped it out?
I wouldn't be at all surprised if this image was the inspiration for the Dungeons and Dragons basilisk.
