I like how on the moon fighting aliens the EDF is still using M16s with no scopes
And firing without a finger on the trigger.
He's all Oh shit it went off!
Or without oxygen for that matter.
Idly, I'm pretty sure that the cartridges that modern guns use would work perfectly well in space since they're self contained. The problem would be the recoil and all.
Hmm.. there's an ArmA 2 mission idea... AT actions on the moon!

they don't have an oxidizer given that oxygen is fairly abundant in the air, on earth, so no bang on the moon. I'm sure something could be rigged up though.
So I downloaded VSB1 just to try it out. It's more buggy than Operation Flashpoint. It's based off of an early version of their engine, except they added a bunch of stuff and removed the story line. I don't understand it. This is meant for military use, and several militaries actually bought and use it, and it crashes more than Operation Flashpoint.
Why can't they get programmers that know what they're doing? It's not that hard. Just go out and hire some.
They clearly know what they're doing, otherwise ArmA wouldn't be as huge and capable as it is. It's just that with more complexity, the probability of bugs increases exponentially. Take TF2 versus ArmA 2. TF2 is pretty much free of any show-stopping bugs, while ArmA 2 has some very annoying flaws like the "giant explosion desync" we experimented with last night. Would VALVe have released a less buggy game? Yes, because VALVe has more resources and can afford to delay games for years. On the other hand, the philosophies of BIS and VALVe are completely different; VALVe would never have attempted a game on the scale of ArmA.
This is a completely separate situation. When a game crashes to desktop for 90% of it's user base, you have a problem, especially when you're marketing it to the government. There are plenty of massive games without many bugs, and the bugs they do have don't really matter (spelling errors, things out of place, graphical glitches).
Also, the only problems I've experienced with ArmA2 so far have been with it's interface and it was a problem easy to avoid.
Man, this is just as buggy as you'd expect from BIS.
Tried to carry a wounded soldier to the chopper since I got tired of his crawling.
Ended up going through the pickup animation, carrying nothing, and his body still left on the ground, couldn't drop the body I wasn't carrying. Load old save.
edit: my friend at DICE on Twitter 15 minutes ago: "ArmA II sure makes our QA process seem incredibly good. Out of like 4 missions, I've bugged out 3."
So it seems that the options are replacement textures for the stock units (activated as a mod) or creating new unit types which I suppose would have to be included in missions.
Would you mind linking the resources to access the resources?
... if that makes sense.
I wouldn't mind mucking around with the textures myself.

Actually, modern cartridges contain their own oxidizer so it would fire in a vacuum. But enough of this digression. Earlier someone was trying to find out where mission files you download are stored when they're pulled down automatically. I'm interested in knowing this as well.

Correct. Guns can actually fire in space. I'm not even being sarcastic or anything, they really can.
Good games earlier, folks, shame about the new server being cranky and whatnot.
I'm hopping back online now, and I'm up for stuffs. Steam account is monjio25, which is the best way to get in contact until I can get added to P.A. Joe.

Yeah, I don't know about VBS's bugs, so I won't comment on them. ArmA 2 certainly doesn't seem as buggy as, say, STALKER, though.
Furthermore, it depends on what you mean by "massive." A game like Half-Life 2 is "massive" in that it contains a lot of map files, models, and so on. Its underlying game system, however, is very simple compared to ArmA's. Entities are not nearly as versatile as ArmA's scripting language, your actions and progress are tightly circumscribed, and so on.
If I bought this to play the single player, then I would probably be pretty pissed--the single-player, like any other cat herding simulation, is more annoying than anything else. When you get a few guys together and play against a nefarious mission creator, however, the game overcomes its bugs and becomes one of the best I've bought in ages.
That's sort of funny, actually; I'd also list STALKER among the best games I've bought in the last couple of years, and both are buggy as Hell and receive a lot of flak for it. Even d/e/r/e/k s/m/a/r/t was ripping on it for being buggy over on RPS, which is hilarious. Still, you can take L4D from me forever and give me ArmA 2 and I would be happy with the trade.
Now that you mention it, thinking back on a lot of games with huge game-breaking bugs are usually Russian/slovak in origin. You'd think they just don't know how to program, but the majority of the demo scene is also located there. You'd think they can hire some real programmers. I just can't imagine what's going on there. I'd compare them in terms of massiveness to games like Oblivion, X3, or Gothic 2. All huge games, all buggy, but at least they actually run and are playable.
Edit: I never got the opportunity to play Operation Flashpoint multiplayer (maybe I should make a thread?), and I wont be able to play ArmA2 multiplayer until I get my own computer that can run it, but I can really see multiplayer being it's strong point.

I'm still trying to figure it out myself.
Also, I've had random crashes every couple of multiplayer maps.
If I'm doing domination, I can play for hours straight, but every other coop map reload (it seems) and I crash about 30 seconds in.

zomg highlight of my night. We're playing some mission where we patrol through the two sabors with some HMMWVs. About half of us are on foot ahead scouting for possible IEDs, so I'm like "guys keep your eyes peeled for roadside bombs". Recoilless is a little further ahead than the rest of us, so someone's like "hold up there's some suspicious items on the roadside." Recoilless heads out to take a look, there's an old tire and a TV. After looking around, he says "it looks clear to--" BOOOOOOOM!
Recoilless was killed.
then another one goes off and two more are killed. Then the HMMWVs come up, 2 of them get blown up. There's maybe 4 of us left and the last hummer takes off for stary sobor and leaves me in the dust.
soon as I build a computer that'll run this better I need to get in with you guys. It'd be nice to get some patches too but I think at least a couple of the crashes are due to some kind of incompatibility with my video card.

Bah, I cant seem to play online. 1 minute in the game I'm perma-lagging and the game cant figure out what to do.
Aha, wow. What was that difficulty setting on, mickey mouse? All the baddies had red circles on them, and all the friendlies had green circles, and all the vehicles had white circles. I had a score of 27 (I was Avery) and nobody even had half my score.
Seriously guys, YOU GOTTA STEP UP DA GAME!
Also, get some different guns at the airbase from the ammo boxes before going out into the field. I got most of my points because I was the only guy who grabbed a SMAW before we all drove away from base, lol.
Terribly good fun though. As I said in game I'd love it if somebody could give me the following as a PA Joe sig:
The Brimley
"Don't mess with the 'beetus."
He's Type 2 (and fat) and I'm Type 1 (and skinny) but it's OK. He's still the only really visible badass "celeb" diabetic I know of, so somebody make me a sig of that.

Yeah, it's normally not on that mode. We normally run at normal difficulty.

Okay guys, I've been playing this for the past two days on and off.
The campaign is broken. I can't beat the second mission. My squadmates go running all the fuck over the place, and one of them will inevitably get gunned down without me being able to do a thing to save him. I had to restart the first mission a few times because I broke a trigger that made beating it impossible. Apparently the bugs get much, much worse the deeper you go.
The multiplayer I'm not sure I get. There doesn't seem to be much of a tutorial or warmup to it, and being dumped into the middle of a game is intimidating. I can't use any vehicles because I don't have enough rank, I can't get across the map because I don't have any vehicles, and my squadmates refuse to do anything but stand around in the base.
The single player scenarios almost work, although I still have no idea how I'm supposed to be playing this. Issuing commands to my squad almost works some of the time, but damn the dudes in GRAW were easier to command, and less prone to running around getting their asses shot off when they detected danger.
Tell me how to get the precious Vitamin Fun out of ArmAII
The fight between publisher and QA is still on-going, Publisher has taken all the highground and QA's reinforcements are depleted. It's hell on earth in there!
Basically when you boot up OFP/ARMA2 you take a portal to another time, a time before quality assurance and fixing things before you buy them, instead of after.
*ahem* I'll probably be firing up ARMA2 tomorrow to inspect the onslaught myself.. sounds like a real typical 'simulation'.
