Copy/paste my ARMA2 install with ACE2 1.3 to somewhere else, and use that when I want to run ARMA2 w/ ACE 1.3 but no OA
Ran Six Updater and installed ACE2 for OA. When I did this, it patched over my ACE files in my ARMA2 directory, not my OA directory. I then had to manually copy those folders over to my OA directory and presumably will need to do this for every update.
I don't know why they couldn't just make it look for the OA directory. I even tried the OA Standalone option in the updater but it was still looking at my ARMA2 folder. I'm researching alternate options but that's all I have for now.
Edit: I think I got it worked out, but it requires some editing and folder browsing. First you need to find your ARMA2 folder and locate the @ACE, @ACEX, @ACEX_SM, @ACEX_PLA, @ACEX_SM, and @CBA folders. Copy those to your clipboard and now find your Operation Arrowhead folder, which should have ArmA2OA.exe in it. Paste those folders here.
Now start Six Updater up and wait for it to go to the webpage thingy. Mouse over configuration at the top and click settings. You should then see a screen with 3 profiles on it, which are Beta, OA Vanilla, and Vanilla. Find OA Vanilla and click Edit. You will then be at a screen with things like name, exe, and path. You need to manually put the path of your Operation Arrowhead in the path box. For example: mine is e:\steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead . Once you are done with that, click update and it should go back to the previous screen. Make sure OA Vanilla reflects the correct path, then click main at the top. For preset select A.C.E. (Op. Arrowhead Standalone) and for setting make sure it says OA Vanilla. Then click execute. Copying over the folders earlier saved you nearly 2 gigs of downloading, and it will keep separate ACE installs in case you want to play the old version without Arrowhead.
Have they made the Steam versions automatically combine yet? They said on the forums they were working on that.
No. The easiest way is to just copy over the addons folder then delete the dubbing, editor, language, languagemissions, ui, and uifonts .pbo and .pbo.bi.bisign files.
I wouldn't get my hopes up for anything Steam related.
Well, my copy of OA finally came in. Next, installing, downloading ACE, setting up junction files, and I hope to be able to join you guys finally. It's been more than a year since I played online, I have to admit.
EDIT: Old, rehearsed question I hate to ask: besides ACE, CBA and CBA OA, what else is needed to play with you guys? ACEX? I've heard you guys use custom maps too, Duala(?), but I'm not sure which ones I need for the basic "Get yourself started" server (apparently, Op4 is a good place to start?).
The TS3 server for Op4 has a "Public Play" channel. Also, I'm sorry a week late with this.
It's quite all right. Actually, I haven't been able to connect to either of the PA Joe servers (I'll need to try again) via IP addresses. They were probably down at the time.
I was looking for the Op4 server in question too, but I think I had the wrong IP address (confused with another named 'Op4'). I'll need to check the addresses in question again.
No, that wasn't it, I think....I just had the totally wrong address. It'll show other servers, it'll just say you can't join.
EDIT: Whoops. 69.64.56.69 is the Arma 2 1.7 server, whereas I was running Arma 2 OA 1.52 (which I'm fairly certain is the most recent OA version...I hope). I was able to connect to 69.64.56.69 thankfully, as "Konstantin Novikov", my old profile name. Now I just need to find Op4's vent chat (if it's not the same as PA. presumably).
Well, actually managed to connect to the Op4 server and set up teamspeak....everyone's as polite and forgiving as you might expect, though I'm not sure if they could actually hear me or not. Very quiet. Still, enjoyable while I was there.
It's not just unforgiving, it's straight up obtuse. I hate the AI, and most of the campaign so far is about making it do what you want. I feel like I'd be better served going on foot alone, but then I might as well not be playing arma.
It seems like it would be really cool if it was better.
Tip: Don't play singleplayer. It's horribly broken.
I tried playing the OA campaign, and more than halfway through the first mission, I failed it because too many of my teammates had died. Well yeah, if they stand upright all the time in an open field that's what they're going to get.
I played a little of the OA campaign in coop and was thoroughly confused. Each person had his own squad and had what seemed like entirely different objectives in a huge area with respawns for both self and vehicles. Better than the original, true, but definitely an odd choice.
I tried playing the demo yesterday, mainly to see how it ran, but have to agree about the crappiness of the SP.
I played through the Op Flash campaigns dozens of times and the AI was ok, mostly doing what you told it to. Although I always enjoyed the missions where I didn't have to command the most.
In OA it seems pretty hit and miss.
Also, there is a HORRIBLE blur filter effect that looks like vaseline smeared all over the screen beyond a few yards away. Which option do I use to remove it?
I really liked the operation flashpoint campaign. Every one they've done since then has been a pain. Or maybe I just have less tolerance for frustration these days.
Has anyone tried the single mission "Jackal?" I don't know what it is, but that one murders my framerate like crazy.
Disabling post-processing is the easiest way. Otherwise there are addons out there for it.
I tried that with no effect, but maybe I needed to restart the game. It really is horrible, I have no idea why they thought it looked good.
This'll sound stupid, but make sure your 3D resolution matches your actual game resolution. Arma 2, for me, came installed with the game running at a typical resolution (1280 x 960, I guess), but the 3D resolution set to 640 x 480, and holy shit did it look bad.
I'm weak. Playing the demo, as ass as it is, made me want to play the game again. Thermal sights are SO COOL. Man, makes me feel less like a tardohat when trying to hunt for enemies at range.
Edit: Well, looks like the expansion hasn't improved the AI any. You have to play the single player campaign on normal or else everybody dies on the first mission but you. Thermal sights are win, though. Also, lots of hate for the UAVs. They fly too fast and turn too slow. It's a constant dance of "dammit I can't look at that thing long enough to see what it is".

Just a heads up, never play with the 506thPIR on their server in arrowhead. The clan is made up of peoples who will TK you for no good reason while they verbally berate you simultaniously. And if you retaliate or say anything back then it's off to bansville. The non-gentleman I am talking about in particular is named Sorbello. Give him a good kick in the balls for me if you see him on the battlefield. These Bunch of ingrates dishonor the real 506th by taking up their flag.
I've seen a few of them on the Op4 server, but I can't really recall if they're douches or not when there. I remember 2 or 3 guys who just loved making offensive remarks and being borderline racist, but I don't remember what clan they were from.

I expect to be back around Wednesday, how do I make six-updater only do OA ACE?

Still a mess.
I should be back to play tomorrow.

Highly recommended: ACEX_SM
"Game On 1" is the channel, right?

Ah. That would explain, thanks.
EDIT: Wow, 1.7 patch already came out? I was still on the 1.5 Beta patch. Hopefully I can update from that.
Damn OA, it's already splintered the player base, the A2 server is getting very little play, and the OA one isn't getting any at all.

Yeah we wouldn't want BIS to go crazy with their copyright on the likeness of the British armed forces.
They're pretty cool about the mod community, I doubt they'd clamp down on anyone.
Hell, someone made a mod so that you can have all the content from ARMA 1 and OFP in the A2 engine and they're cool with that.
I'm sure they have the right to stop people from using their game to make products that compete with theirs.
No, not really.

Honestly, I have a lot of fun designing missions.
