I have a friend, who has a birthday coming up soon. Looking to get him a game. He's a big fan of older RPG games on the PS1. Off the top of my head, stuff like Breath of Fire 3,Wild Arms,Final Fantasy 7-9 and Star Ocean 2. Looking for something on the PS2 though, since his PS1 is on the way out. Plus, apart from FF10, i think he really missed a lot of titles on the PS2. Makes my job a lot easier i guess.
Anything that matches those games on the PS2, that isn't too hard to find?
I have to warn against Rogue Galaxy; I thought it was pretty, but ultimately boring as hell.
I can second Dark Cloud 2, Wild Arms 3, and Persona 3 and 4, though, they're pretty fun. Also, Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia are pretty great, IMO (if you can find them).
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was/is pure gold. I will also say that this was one of the few RPGs that I whole heartedly recommend getting the strategy guide for. It's a really, really, good guide and added alot to my experience with the game. Apart from that Final Fantasy XII is really good. Plays alot like an MMO, so your like/dislike of that playstyle should be accounted for. I don't think Dark Cloud 1 and 2 have been mentioned, but those are also very solid. They are much more Action RPGs, not unlike Zelda. I LOVED the weapon customization they had.
Edit: looks like Dark Cloud was recommended a couple of times, so yea, thirded.
Star Ocean: Till The End of Time is supposed to be quite good.
I loved it, but I know there's a lot of criticism involving a twist later in the game. I thought it was a bit stupid, but others have complete hatred of the game over it. YMMV.
Disgaea 1 and 2 are great, but if he has a PSP then he should get those versions. Disgaea may be harder to find than D2 since it was published by Atlus.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Suikoden 3 would be my other recommendations. SH:C and Suikoden 3 were both enjoyed without playing the originals. Also, I think SH:C had a different title in the UK.
Had a look at how easy most of them would be to get new, here in the UK. Think i'm going to go for Rogue Galaxy or Breath of Fire DQ.
Your friend seems to have a very similar taste to myself when it comes to RPG's. That said, of those two games, I'd go with Rogue Galaxy. BoF: DQ's not bad, but I personally much preferred Rogue Galaxy. The story in it isn't as bad as people say, the voice acting is actually somewhat decent, and the combat is excellent. I recall DQ as a terrible grind-fest that encouraged you to grind out levels, die, restart your game (you retained your levels on subsequent restarts), and start again, only to do the same. Think Dead Rising, only, instead of mass zombie killing to grind levels, JRPG-style level grinding.
BoF: DQ is the game I am recalling that did this, yes?
Breath of Fire DQ could be a bit chancy as a gift... it's a very unconventional love it or hate it kind of game, and is almost nothing like the earlier Breath of Fire games.
Rogue Galaxy and Dark Cloud 2 are good choices in the action RPG category. Dragon Quest 8 is an almost certain win for somebody who likes the older, turn based RPGs. Suikoden V and the Persona games should also appeal.

See, I've liked the older turn-based RPGs. However, I couldn't help but feel like Dragon Quest 8 felt like it was chugging along at a snail's pace. This goes for both the story, as well as the combat. The game just didn't seem to be in any hurry to do anything. Combine that with frequent enemy encounters, and it tended to frustrate me more than allow me to enjoy it. Its a shame, too, because I really was looking forward to that game.

BoF: DQ has that system, yes, but you only have to grind if you play poorly. If you play well, you'll gain plenty of XP just playing through the game.
More specifically:
#1 - Group enemies together unless they're too powerful for you. You get a +% bonus to the total XP for the battle depending on how many enemies are in the group by doing this which can really add up: one strong enemy (for a high base XP) plus lots of weak enemies (for a high bonus) equals a ton of XP in a single battle.
#2 - Use traps to make battles easier.
#3 - Each character can have up to 3 weapon setups equipped at a time. Try to have a nice variety of weapons on hand (a couple of elemental weapons + a strong non-elemental weapon is generally a good idea).
In any case, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is definitely a polarizing game. IMO, it's one of the greatest games of all time, but I can see how many people wouldn't get it.

I guess it sounds kind of snarky to just say Breath of Fire DQ, Wild Arms 3-5, FF12, and Star Ocean 3? (And to be honest I haven't played them all).
However, Dark Cloud 2, Rogue Galaxy and Xenosaga I and III were some of my PS2 favorites.
No, it's not.
I'd recommend Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, the Shadow Hearts games, Xenosaga, and the Persona games.
This will be here until I receive an apology or Weedlordvegeta get any consequences for being a bully

I dont like persona 3 because you can only control the main character witch takes out the strategy against bosses.
If the president had any real power, he'd be able to live wherever the fuck he wanted.
