A DS game, meaning I can import instead of waiting forever for a PAL release that probably doesn't happen (see: Devil Summoner 2)
I really feel that SMT 4 won't be on the DS. Spin-offs are one thing, but a main series entry is a huge deal. There's only three of them, with one spin-off, and the jump from 2 to 3 was huge. 4 needs to be a similar jump.
Indeed. Im really very surprised its on the DS but it seems to have the same mechanics of ever SMT weve come to love so Im really excited to see how it plays out honestly. Im just really really baffled its on the DS and is already coming out within a few months in Japan. But hey. I guess this means more games faster for different consoles. And I dont have to buy a new one just yet. Ill go for it.
Also. ...Schwarz-verse? What the fuck?

Bolded words are the most relevant. I'm going to guess that most of SMT's sales are in Japan. Niche title + Handheld land = cheapest handheld = DS.

Squeenix may have paved the way with DQ IX though. A new series entry may be huge, but it doesn't hold a candle to a main entry in the Dragon Quest series.
Obviously this is just speculation, but I don't think it's so crazy an idea that it can just be discarded.
If I were Atlus I would wait and see how FF XIII sells in Japan. If it does well there and ends up selling systems on top of it, then I would feel confident enough to devote the larger amount of resources it will take to develop a next gen title.
Hell, they might just keep milking Persona for now and dash all of our hopes.

Whenever someone says of a new jRPG 'I'm kinda disappointed that this is on the DS' or any equivalent variant, I can't help but wince.
This generation (and in all probability the next one) is gonna be hard on you guys.
I've been saying the same thing in the DQIX and VC2 threads for a while now. The writing is on the wall, guys.
As someone who has literally no experience with pretty much any SMT game, aside from dabbling in Persona 1 in the PS1 days, but who loved the crap out of the Etrian Odysseys, should I be excited for this announcement? Mentions of some loose parallels piqued my curiosity.
.....
It seems atlus will develop for portables only. After all, they`re a small company and develop for 360/PS3 can be very expensive (and impractical) for them.

That and DS game sales grind nearly everything else into the dust in Japan. And if I was feeling uncharitable, they don't have to bother localising in PAL as we can import DS games (as I have done with Devil Survivor).

This isn't quite your standard spinoff though. It's actually getting the SMT title in japan, which is a pretty big deal. I think the last game in the series to get it was nocturne.

Did Nocturne ever get "3" in its official title? If not, I don't think it's safe to assume the new game isn't #4...

In Japan it did. SMT3: Nocturne.
The only other game in the main series that isn't numbered is SMT if. Strange Journey would be the 5th game to have the SMT tag.

Makes me wonder if the DS and PSP will be the new place to make their games since I dont think they want PS2 anymore.

The series hasn't had the Etrian Odyssey buildable party or cartography so far, as such, but in terms of old-school dungeon crawling they're close, and the series is consiostently at the top of the JRPG genre.
Unless you hate all forms of narrative and have to have mapping tools, then be excited.

Sorry for being nitpicky, but the original Saturn Devil Summoner and NINE also carried the SMT tag in Japan.
That being said, as someone who enjoys both Etrian Odyssey and old school SMT, I'm all over this. Let's just hope that Meguros music matches the atmosphere of the game this time (I'm still bitter about P1).

Alternately, they might follow DQX and MH3.
Kaneko did express interest at the reveal of the Wii Remote at making a first person SMT where you could interact directly with the environment using the remote

I imagine If we see a "next-gen" SMT game, it's gonna be on the wii. This is almost a cock-eating level bet that we won't see an SMT title on the 360/PS3 unless this console gen runs longer and development costs come down.
I killed Forneus today. It only took me a month to log the required three hours that it took. I should finish this game before the next presidential election at this rate.

I couldn't put Nocturne down on my second run. Shame Devil Survivor frustrates me more often then not, but when I get the right team, I usually breeze through it.
Just started Day 4.
And more and more I want to strangle Midori. Yuzu might be single-minded, but at least she's not a complete moron.

Yes she is, cj. Yes she is.
Midori's awesome if just for one line in one fight:
"What!? How rude! Do you have any idea how popular I am on the internet!?"

Seriously, I think she's the only 3 move unit in the game.

SMT 4 on DS? Why not? If DQ can do it, anyone can.

Why not just make Vasuki? You can fuse a Taraka and Genbu for it.
Are waiting for tomorrow

Because I'm at the sixth block right now. I completely missed Vasuki and I'm pretty sure I missed Taraka and Genbu as well.
