E 74???

I bought my 360 used from a local Gamecrazy about 4 months ago, and it's worked perfectly up until now.
I come home from work one day, decide to blow off some steam in Fallout 3, but when I try to turn on my console, I get a black screen that says "System Error. Please contact technical support." And at the bottom it displays "E 74." After sopme googling I found out that E 74 means some sort of hardware failure, but that can't be possible for mine, qas it hasn't moved from the spot I left it in since the day I brought it home. To further compound the fact, my apartment is on the ground floor, in addition to my building beiong air conditioned (so it can't have been a heat issue) I don't own pets, my girlfriend doesn't care for gaming, and the most I've ever come to abusing it is when I open and close the disc tray.

I tried getting microsoft to repair it, but since I bought it used I have no warranty and they're trying to charge me 100+ dollars to fix. I'm on a college budget here, I can't afford that, so I was wondering if anyone here would be able to point me to a guide on how to fix it myself, or if they know a trustworthy website or company that will fix it for 20 dollars or less.

I don't know where microsoft gets off charging me to fix their own shitty made-in-china system, haven't they ever heard of a little something called QUALITY CONTROL?

The E74 error should be covered under the 3 year warranty extension for RROD's. It applies to the console, not the purchaser afaik. I don't know why they're trying to charge you to fix it. Maybe don't tell them you bought it used next time you call?

    E74 error/warranty extension.

Also, everything breaks sooner or later. When it breaks out of warranty, you have to pay for it. That's just the way things are.

I still own my old first gen Xbox, I've had that since 2003, and it's been handled way rougher than my 360, yet it runs perfectly! It's like ever since Gates left Microsoft everyone got lazy!

okay, welcome to the real world

you bought a USED xbox 360. You have no idea what sort of conditions the previous owner (or OWNERS) put it through, they could have dropped it out of windows daily for all you know, and as long as the outside looked alright, you'd still have bought it.

I still have an NES that works like the day I got it, so what? things break. Welcome to life

your warranty doesn't cover it? aw shucks, you get what you pay for

I doubt highly you'll be able to ship it to someone, get them to fix it, and return it back to you for 20 bucks unless you personally know someone who can do it and wants to do you a favor

    *Sigh*
I have a sheet of paper from gamecrazy that says the thing's been inspected, tested, and/or repaired and if it breaks within a month of me buying it they'll replace it blah de bloo all that jazz. I don't understand how something that I don't put any physical stress on just breaks.

Even electricity running through electronics is physical stress. Energy is energy. Where do you think the heat comes from?

I get the E 74 from time to time, but I've found that when I get it, I just turn the system off and back on and it works again. This has never once failed, I've had the system for 2 years, and other than that, and the occasional "this disk is not readable", it works fine. I assume you've tried turning it off and back on, but just in case, it works for me.

Nope, wont' work at all, no matter what I do. First I get suckered into windows vista, now they make me waste 200 dollars and some system that might as well be made of eggshells?

MS didn't make you waste anything. If you had purchased a new system, then it would easily be under warranty. Gamecrazy patched up a used system and only guaranteed that it would work for a month, yet you bought it.

Then how come my old first gen xbox works fine after years of falling off tables, getting stepped on, and being run for 4 hours at a time? Exactly, I got hosed. (My old Xbox was also bought used, from the same place)

Because failure rates for different pieces of equipment are different. Also it sounds like you should treat your electronics better.

if they weren't bought within literal days of each other, there's no comparison in quality from the store. Buying something that works from a place and then waiting 5 years and then expecting something COMPLETELY different to work as well is not even smart

they insured a refurbished and seemingly busted system for 1 month

    it broke after a month

    you're boned

this isn't microsoft's fault in any way aside from the fact their original Xbox 360s are built strangely. you agreed to the ownership when you bought it.

Blame gamecrazy for selling you a shoddy system

or blame yourself for buying a used system and then complaining when it doesn't work as well as a new one

Lotta worthless hate in this thread

But anyway, they should still cover it, and if they don't, I'd take it up with the retailer, and I would be imposing in both cases. You don't need to let MS know you bought it second-hand. Just keep trying. You give up too easily.

Go on the 360 support website and try registering the console using the serial number. I'm going to guess it's over 3 years old since its manufacture date, so you won't be able to get it repaired.

I guess you learned your lesson by purchasing a used system.. a system that is notorious for hardware failure. If you can't get MS to fix it, ebay it as a broken xbox and then purchase a new one.
