I've searched the web for reliable, up-to-date answers on this but haven't found anything from the last few months. Since the PS3 is region-coded for DVD as well as Blu-ray playback, is there any (safe) way it can be made region-free for DVDs? I'm asking because I've already got a bunch of devices in my living room, and ideally I wouldn't want to add a new one unless I could get rid of one of the ones that's already there.
If this has been addressed on the PA forums, my apologies. I'm afraid both DVD and PS3 seem to be too short for the search engine...

Hmm... This is a total long shot, but it just occurred to me:
If you install one of the PS3 Linux distros, you might be able to use VLC. VLC, by nature of its using an unofficial CSS implementation, may be able to get around region codes. If (and this is a rather big if) VLC has even been compiled for the Cell architecture and if it runs well enough on it and if it circumvents regions, then you could play other-region DVDs on the system.

Since Cell is a highly specialized PPC chip, this shouldn't be an issue since the PPC version of Ubuntu has VLC available from the repositories.
This got me curious. I looked it up and it appears that VLC can play other regions as long as the drive itself doesn't hold DVD region settings in its firmware (some models do, others don't). I don't know how the PS3's BD drive handles DVDs, so unless you can find the answer somewhere, the only way to find out may be to try it.
