That said, turn-by-turn GPS you can find a lot of free programs for smartphones to install the aps. Further, you CAN get said phone for full retail price if you don't want the data plan to connect it to wifi. But if you get it as an upgrade, you must get the data package for the following business reasons.
Red'd for falseness.
Any pda/smartphone released on VZW since November of 2008 is required to have a data package on it regardless of whether you pay full retail, 1 year, or 2 year pricing.

The Droid will be no different in this regard.
I don't think I specified. Paying full retail for a phone doesn't require you to activate the phone on a phone line. You would just get a DROID with no phone aspect, just the wi-fi and all the other cool features. Why you'd do that, who knows.
But, yes, any phone you get that is a Smartphone/PDA that is on an active line does require a data plan.

Buy phone, activate ESN on a different carrier?

I suppose. Since I get 50% off for being an employee, I don't have an adequate comparison, and I used to be on a Basic 450 with $10 text package before that, sooooo I'm not the best to judge.
But I like be able to use my phone with internet everywhere, so that's why I recommend us, but I'll never say we're cheap.

Well, as I've said before my current carrier has great coverage where I live and Verizon doesn't. With Verizon I'm lucky to get EDGE, with my current carrier I get EV-DO in my neck of the woods. And while I don't know whether it's still active my carrier also used to have a roaming agreement with Verizon that included data, so technically I'd be able to take advantage of that if it's still in place :P

Yeah, Sprint and Verizon piggy-back on a lot of their towers too. I dunno, I rarely do not get EVDO with VZW. Only time I don't is driving through Indiana to Chicago from Columbus. It's all dead.

Is android going to be ported to media devices like itouch and Zune?
For Nationwide Select 450 - 59.99. That includes M2M and nights/weekends, of course and unlimited texting. Nationwide Connect 450 is all the above plus unlimited mobile web and mobile e-mail for 69.99. That is for non-pda/smart-phones.
At 900 minutes, the price jumps 20 dollars for both plans respectively.
PDA's and Smartphones are the Select plan, so 59.99 or 79.99 for 450/900 minutes respectively. Then an additional 29.99. While it is slightly pricier, it's also because we have a higher operating costs. And yeah, VZNav costs 9.99 extra, but Droid won't have it as you can use Google's and BB has a slew of GPS aps you can get.
PDA/Smartphones can't be on a connect/premium plan because those two plans aren't compatible. They are built as bundles for standard phones.
so I could operate the droid for basically $100/month and have 450 minutes and unlimited to verizon? If I wanted my wife to have the same thing how much would it cost for both of us to have data plans?
Echoing Dignified Pauper, they really actually are a great company to work for. Ok, so it's call center work if you're a CSR and customers are idiots 95% of the time - but the benefits and opportunity for advancement are fantastic. They're paying for me to get my Masters atm (one benefit for full time staff: $8k/yr in tuition paid for if the subject has business relevance).
And yes, I'm nothing but a lowly CSR in one of the call centers atm. But I do know we're still on a hiring kick, so definitely put your resume in.

$30 for a data plan per line. $40 for 450 minutes for one line, or $70 for two lines to share 700 minutes, not including any other services aside from defaults (voice mail, unlimited in network calling, nights and weekends at 9PM, etc.)

So it's $70 a month for 450 minutes and the data plan. Am I correct in thinking that text messaging isn't a part of the "data" plan? How much does Verizon charge for unlimited text messaging?
And why the hell aren't text messages considered data anyway?
So I am pretty set on getting the Droid, but the one thing that I have not figured out is how android syncs with your PC. Do they have their own software or is Verizon going to have their own manager?

The gmail, calendar and contacts synch on their own, you can set them not to or to only synch in one direction.
Other apps vary.

You can mount the SD card through the provided USB cable then drag and drop. Then you can just drag and drop anything. The phone will read music and pictures/video regardless of location in the appropriate media programs and file them according to metadata (music) or stored folders (pictures/video)
The connect and premium plans are for devices running VZW's OS only. Any Blackberry/WinMO/Android etc. requires the $30 package or an even more expensive bundled plan.
Yes, there are emulators. I haven't used them personally but I have heard they exist. No, there isn't flash right now but there will be soon, like early next year.
Edited for rules sake. I know that there are other emulators apparently. I dunno, I am pretty positive most are pay, and I'm not about paying for things unless it's Virtual Console or PSN.

Because text messages came about, as a convention, prior to internet in phones being a convention.
And they can make more money by keeping them separate, so they do.
If you want unlimited texting:
Fam Shr Select 700 = 99.99
+ 2 unlimited internet packaged for smartphones - 29.99(2) = 60.
160 bucks/2 = 80 per line for unlimited everything and sharing 700 mins.
