They were including google proprietary software in their ROMs and google did not like that. They removed the google stuff and changed how they were installed and now they are cool again. It was stuff like the dialer for the phone, you know things you can't do with out.
Yeah, everything's pretty cool now. My bet is they were only after Cyanogen because he released proprietary stuff before the actual Google release date. As in, they haven't contacted any other ROM developers and Cyanogen changed what he includes in his ROM, so even he is back up and running. So, it's basically business as usual.

I want to catalog my books and I figure scanning the barcodes with my G1 would be easier than typing stuff. Is there any app that will make a list of stuff like that? I know of the apps that will search stores for the best prices, but I'm looking for something that scans into a list that's exportable to my computer.

Alright the calendar entry system for events is driving me nuts. I start work at a different time each day but the shift is always the same length. There doesn't seem to be a way to copy it over to the next day and just change the starting time. That 'recurring' shit is worthless. This is the one thing my shitty Winmo could do that android will not.
So when Droid drops on friday that will be the first 2.0 device right? Will they have updates for the HTC units that are already out there? It seems odd that verizon would release their rebadged hero still running the old version of Android.
Well the custom roms have a 2.0 version out soon or are the older devices just not compatible with 2.0?
Nothing about upgrading current models to 2.0. With HTC, current phones may not be compatible because there is a compatibility issue with 2.0 and their Sense UI
As far as custom ROMS, who knows.
Personally, I am just hoping the Passion comes out.

This is wrong. HTC has issued a statement that they are working on a 2.0 update for the GSM & Sprint Hero.

OOO! Care to sport a link. I've yet to hear about this. Our trainers said nothing had been confirmed.
Has anyone used Google Voice w/Android? I was reading a Droid review that said you could do free texting if you have GV. How does that work?
There's an official Google Voice app from Google in the Android Marketplace, but I haven't actually tried it myself. Some official info here though.
Basically you give people your google voice number and texts to that will be free. You then can check them using the app or the web.
I am considering doing this, but not sure if I want to try and get everyone I know to start using my GV number. Especially since so many of my friends are on Verizon and get free calling/texts that way.

That's the rub right there. I was thinking "sweet I can do free txting and cut my plan," then my wife said, "yeah that's not a free number for me to text."
Has anyone dealt with podcasts on an Android device? I'm considering the Droid, but podcast (and non-DRMed audiobooks) playback is something I can't really find much info on. All of the apps I'm finding seem to be geared toward downloading podcasts on the device, but I prefer to handle that on my desktop computer and then transfer podcasts over to whatever portable device I'm using (currently an iPod Touch). I don't expect the tight integration I'd get from iTunes and an iPod/iPhone, but it would be nice if an Android phone could at least save my playback position in video and audio files. If I can get Android to keep track of which files I've listened to and sync that information back to the computer that would be even better.
I suppose I should mention I'm currently using MediaMonkey for my podcast & audiobook playing & syncing to my Touch, but if another player would work better with Android I'd certainly be open to suggestions.
Am I the only one who uses the fucking clock in the upper right corner? Why throw away real estate. Need my calendar strip, Astrid tasks box and shortcuts/folders on my main screen or else.

Seriously. I don't see the need for a clock on your home screen when there's a clock on the task bar and down at the bottom when you press a button to turn the locked screen back on

You could say the same about an expensive watch. "Why would I need that if this 3 dollar watch tells time just fine?"
I personally am using my phone mostly for social networking. So I'm not too focused on space. While the Moto Droid only has 3 screens and the Eris has 7... I'd rather have the keyboard.
Order my Hero Wednesday, Sprint overnights it to me and the UPS tracking shows "out for delivery" at 6am Thursday. Wait all day, leave for work at 5:30pm. UPS shows up at 6pm.
Wife plugged it in to charge for me but I didn't get to break the seal on it. I somehow feel slightly cheated.

And does this mean I shouldn't use the pre-installed Peep app?
Peep should be fine. The issue is with the native messaging app. Long story short install chompsms and turn off notifications from inside the native messaging app then restart.

Chompsms is pretty awesome, as well, so that's a gain.
For some reason, I didn't like Peep. I always use Twidroid.
As for killer apps: Taskiller and more specifically, its "kill all" shortcut.

Yeah but I don't feel like typing everything in and the iSight scanning is slow, too. Plus I'd like to have it on my phone just because
bloodatonement that looks perfect (although I can't tell if you can export), so I'll give it a shot. Thanks
edit: I don't know how to get it onto my phone!

Basically the unit is going to be a WinMo unit and they feel it might detract to make android too....
Here is still hoping though.

Install DoubleTwist and sync away. I got it a few days ago and its awesome to sync your Android phone with it.
That phone does look real pretty.

though it bothers me a little the the engadget article doesn't link back to an HTC press release or corroborating doc.

Mine doesn't
(They removed it in an update, apparently. Meh.)
EDIT: Oh, right, not the HTC Sense one. Disregard.

Personally I think the Eris looks a bit better.
It's actually running pretty well, now to browse this thread and see what cool stuff I can install.
