What AT&T phone(s) allows WiFi tethering out of the box (i.e. without hacks, rooting, jailbreaking, etc)?
My Fuze did, I believe. It was under networking or whatever. But I can't say for sure because I never tried it before I added a custom Rom. I'll let you know if the Tilt2 does when it comes in. I know it can because I did it numerous times for friends when the wi-fi signal was shit. And I know there weren't any charges associated with it because my brother told me they should so I stalked my bill to see if it was true and it didn't happen.
Someone convince me not to buy an Evo 4G when my contract expires in June.
uh.. the ten dollar mandatory data plan for 4G is dumb if you're not in a 4G market. Still cheaper than Verizon's equivalent single line smartphone plans though, which is where the only other equivalent Android handset comes from.
Edit: I guess there's always the Nexus One but fuck AT&T and T-Mo.

For real. I just finished a T-Mo contract. GSM nevermore.
Any other (anticipated) issues with the Evo vis-a-vis the Incredible? I'm fortunate enough to live right in the middle of a WiMax market.

Well holy shit get the fucking Evo. Engadget's review was mondo favoroso and there's nothing else in the forseeable future. As long as you're comfortable waiting until potentially late late this year for 2.2 and full superduperflash it's killer. I haven't heard anything showstoppingly bad yet, but that'll probably come more to light shortly after launch, like the N1 service fluctuation issues. Incredible hasn't had any sort of huge software or hardware issues and we're about a month after launch almost.

Good to hear. It seems perfect from specs/reviews, so naturally I suspected there would be a minor bug that causes it to kill your entire family and burn down your house while you sleep*. Evo it is.
*Addressed in Android 2.2 Froyo, coming to the HTC Evo in late 2010.
heh, showing off the fact that my phone is a portable wifi hotspot is my new party trick
also, bookmark to kongregate is now in my games folder
This functionality in the EVO is pretty cool.
I don't know if it's worth the extra monthly charges, maybe if they did like what at&t is doing with the ipad, where you get like 25mb for $5 at a time or whatever it is.
Got 2.2 on my N1 as well. Tried out a flash tool for one of my board games (Space Alert) and it worked really well. Seemed a little hard to press the tiny buttons on the flash but it did work! Haven't tried stuff like Hulu yet though. Need a list of good flash sites so I can go neener neener with my iPhone friends.

Forget EVO
I've got a Nexus One running 2.2
So there's an android store app that does this, that the carrier doesn't have control of?

No.
It is quite litterally a piece of the firmware itself.
Under the wifi and networking settings, in addition to the old wifi, bluetooth, etc options, there is also one for usb tethering, and one for acting as a wifi hotspot. you can also set a WPA key if you want to lock your hotspot. The SSID seems to be stuck as "AndroidAP", though, whicdh creates a question of what occurs if two androids start hotspots next to each other.
Remember, I've got an unlocked phone bought directly from Google. I ran an update on it yesterday, which gave me 2.2 it is NOT, however, rooted or anything.
We don't know how this will play out on other phones. The fact that mine is stock 2.2, not rooted, is a good sign. The fact that my update came from google, not through TMo, though, does suggest that carriers may still have the ability to insist on removing this from the firmware before pushing it out.
Anyway, I have a pressing question: Has Drop 7 been removed from the Android Marketplace? I uninstalled it yesterday, before I unserstood how app2sd was working in 2.2, and when I went to reinstall it, it was gone. I paid 3 bucks for the thing, I'd really like to be able to have it back.
If you're on t-mobile, try calling them about it, they can probably issue you a refund for the app if it's non-existent now.
.. and the fact that your from-google nexus1 with from-google froyo, not being restricted by tmobile would suggest to me that an un-restricted froyo rom could be constructed for any android phone, by the modding community.
legality of this is of course questionable.. obviously you're intentionally circumventing a profit revenue they've put in place, but on the other hand, you're still only using the data access you've already paid for, and if providers want to make the argument that they can charge you more to access the router app functionality.. acquiring it directly from the OEM of your phone's firmware manufacturer instead of paying monthly for access to it hardly seems, illegitimate.
It would be like if you bought comcast internet, and somehow comcast replaced the firmware on your router with firmware that shut down if you didn't pay your comcast bill... but you called up Linksys and they showed you how to go to factory firmware..? have you really done anything wrong? have you even violated your terms of service? if you have, considering the obscure idealogy of double billing going on here is that tos agreement even enforceable?
how does that wifi router affect your battery on android? it was fucking deadly to my iphone battery.
haven't run it (or flash) long enough to get an idea of battery effects.
And for the time being, t-mobile has announced NOTHING about restricting or chargeing for mobile hotspot functionality, so I have no real concerns about breaking rules that don't exist.
Hulu didn't work when I tested it, but I only tried once.
I've heard that megavideo works, though
You have to use the Desktop useragent to get Hulu to work. Activate it by going to about:debug (there's no screen/page so it'll look like nothing happened) then back to settings, scroll all the way down and hit UAString.
Also Chrome to Phone is here. (And there's a bookmarklet for all the other browsers once you've registered your device.)
Verizon is kind of iffy on tethering though. A ton of their phones can be used for tethering that they don't want you to know about. Generally the rule from their sales reps when I spoke with them was "you're good if you dont get caught" which means don't abuse it and noone will care or notice. But if they do notice then you are fucked.

That is fucking beautiful.
I love Google more than I am honestly comfortable to admit. Like, there is seriously a fucking tear welling up in my left eye right now.
A corporation that has managed to turn huge profits BY being incredibly consumer positive. I know that some day the management will shift and they'll end up just like everyone else, but right now, I'm just glad to have them as they are for the moment.

"Fucked" means you get a notice that says "Stop all the downloadin or next time we terminate your service."
So then you just stop. Nothing to be seriously worried about.

From what I've seen, this is just because Google hasn't enabled paid market access for Froyo yet (supposedly it isn't actually supposed to be available, since they've pulled the files from their servers.)
Unless you're able to get other paid things, in which case I don't know :P

I think the vast majority of us use tethering for things like checking email at a bad hotel, or light browsing during a roadtrip ("just passed apparently the biggest ball of #twine in the world #rollinrollinrollin"), or whatever. For the common use cases of tethering, you'll never get in trouble. Just don't stream The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition over your tether while driving across the country.
Edit: even though that'd make for a pretty rad roadtrip. Hm.
If you scroll down to the bottom of the manual where it shows everything that comes in the box, the picture on the manual shows the tablet with an ipad interface. Heh.

Woo, Android 2.1 is out for the Sprint Hero. Time to back up my contacts and update.

T-Mobile technically forbids tethering in their terms of service:
1. Permissible and Prohibited Uses
Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your device and not on any other equipment. Unless explicitly permitted by your Data Plan, other uses, including for example, tethering your device to a personal computer or other hardware, are not permitted.
although in practice this is completely unenforced (and I myself will tether on rare occasion, although to be honest my Nexus One has replaced my netbook pretty much entirely so I don't do it that often).
That's probably because they don't have a system in place to charge extra for it, though, the way Sprint does. I wonder if they ever will? They usually try to capitalize on being pretty cheap and easygoing about addon charges, probably because they can't compete on service area coverage.
