Anyway, I have a pressing question: Has Drop 7 been removed from the Android Marketplace? I uninstalled it yesterday, before I unserstood how app2sd was working in 2.2, and when I went to reinstall it, it was gone. I paid 3 bucks for the thing, I'd really like to be able to have it back.

From what I've seen, this is just because Google hasn't enabled paid market access for Froyo yet (supposedly it isn't actually supposed to be available, since they've pulled the files from their servers.)

Unless you're able to get other paid things, in which case I don't know :P

Can anyone confirm whether paid apps are available on 2.2? I bought a few apps and don't want to have to live without them, but on the other hand I really want to try out 2.2 on my nexus one..

edit: Regarding the issue I was having where I'd run out of battery at night, I think it was the e-reader app I was using. It would disable turning off the display while it's open. When I hit the power button to put the phone to sleep, the backlight timer wouldn't be re-enabled for some reason. That wouldn't be a major problem on its own, but the display pops back on when you put the device to sleep, and it would stay on afterward due to the e-reader app. So I was reading in bed, I hit the power button moments before I fall asleep, the display then pops back on and stays on until the device goes into a power critical state and forces the display off.

Apparently protected apps aren't showing up, but people are seeing paid apps fine. Also allegedly the manual 2.2 update was for the press only. A tweet from a Google Android dude.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the manual where it shows everything that comes in the box, the picture on the manual shows the tablet with an ipad interface. Heh.

There's also an 8 inch version (:winky:) that comes in a box with a picture of an ipad on the front. Smoooth.

Interestingly, the manual does show it having an iPad/Phone-like dock in Section 4.4. Love how the box shows it running HTC Sense, too

So I'm liking Android 2.1 on the Hero so far (and it is 2.1, not 2.2, despite the software version number being 2.2x.xx). I find the total Facebook integration somewhat creepy though. I added my Facebook account to the phone, which is fine, I like getting notifications from family, and I like the way it will add family events to my calendar....but the way it takes all my Facebook friends with phone numbers, and adds them to my People list...is creepy. There are a lot of people in my People list now that I've never actually spoken to on the phone, but I have their phone numbers.

It did give me the opportunity to send out some funny text messages though.

You probably already know this, but you don't have to set it up so that happens. You can make your Facebook sync only put pictures on contacts you already have, rather than putting your Facebook friends as new contacts. Think it's under the Sync options under Settings.

You can change your prefs in the Settings menu of the Facebook app. And you should've been able to select what kinda syncing you want when you logged in the first time.

That version number sounds like the kernel version. Haven't noticed any difference between the way Facebook was integrated in 1.5 as compared to 2.1, although that might just be because the ROMs I tried only synced Facebook contacts which matched my Google ones.

I do like that using the virtual keyboard on these forums doesn't seem to lag as much as it used to; there isn't a huge gap between pressing keys and having the phone respond any more :D

Nah, it's the software version number. The kernel version is 2.6.xxx. Not sure why it lists it as 2.2 when it's really 2.1, but oh well.

Also, the Facebook integration in 1.5, at least on my phone, worked nothing like this, but it's possible I just didn't twiddle the right nob when I was using 1.5.

Got my android app in a mostly-working state. I had kind of forgotten how squirrely Java syntax is. No indexers or properties and the event subscription stuff is just weird. Still, nice to have a garbage collected and strongly typed language to work in and an editor with auto-complete. That puts it above Firefox extension development in my book.

Make a Firefox extension and then try to not appreciate having those.

    var htemp = doSomethingYouDontKnowAbout();

What the hell is in this variable? I guess whatever is returned from that function. Oh it gets the value from somewhere else. Let's go play hunt the source just so I can figure out what fields and methods are on this thing.

    Man, this is so frustrating

Dungeon Hunter is only available on Verizon for some bizarre reason

    also, gameloft's site is broken, and I can't access www.gameloft.com only http://www.gameloft.com/smartphone/

A bunch of pirate jerks on some other site are claiming to have it working on rooted nexus ones, so I guess this is all just an issue with gameloft's online store.. Hopefully they'll straighten it out pretty soon, I'm really hoping these guys will clean up their act and pave the way for high quality game development on Android.

Which part doesn't make sense? Gameloft sells their games directly through their site to avoid the 30% sales cut Google takes through the market as well as avoiding the expensive potential chargebacks. But in only selling their games directly through their website, when their site is down they can't make any cashmoneys. No one can buy their games. But I'm sure whatever piratey app downloady locationy place that has them at no cost is still up.

There was nothing in there regarding installation.

This is pretty much the defacto standard. Every example I've ever looked at, if it's explaining anything where the IDE matters, it assumes you're using Eclipse and ADT. Plus it works very smoothly, is easy to test on multiple API versions, screen sizes, etc.
