So this is me, making my best MySpace pose, give or take a year.

I just went on vacation for four days and didn't bring a razor so I have slightly more facial hair than normal.

In the grand tradition of (a) being lazy and (b) not caring what I look like, I'm considering a beard. Questions!

1. Is a beard less upkeep than shaving? I take an electric razor and molest my face every day until it is largely hairless. Would a beard be less work, more work, or equal? If the answer is anything other than "less work" I guess you can ignore the rest of this post and just tell me.

2. Should I grow a beard? This would be a goatee sort of thing or whatever, not a Jesus beard. I don't care what I look like but I also don't want people to think I'm a Hasidic Jew or a hippie or unkempt, one of which would be a correct assumption but I still don't want people to know. If the answer is anything other than "yes, by all means grow one, I am a fashion expert and it would make you attractive to everyone ever born" you can ignore question 3.

3. How do I grow a beard? I imagine it's not quite as easy as "stop shaving."

Some people just have more trouble getting real facial hair. When I decide I want my goatee again, I just stop shaving around my mouth and chin for a week and it's like magic. It stops itself there mostly, and I only have to trim/groom it once every month or two.

    1. Stop shaving.

    2. Buy a beard trimmer.

    3. Trim your mangy growth.

Really, it isn't much more complex than that. Remember that you can always take more off, growing it back takes much more time.

I keep short "facial hair" and every other day run a trimmer at low setting. Much less upkeep for me. It really depends on your daily growth and routine. I have some friends who can't grow facial hair for the life of them. If you're maintaining facial hair of multiple lengths (goatee and shaved cheeks) it probably is more work to make it look great. If you're going for a "scruffy" look, it sure is less maintenance.

Edit: Looking at the pictures, I think a goatee would suit you very well.

Depending on how need you need/want to keep it, I've found having a beard to be much more maintenance than shaving. You still have an area of your neck that you have to shave every day or two, and you have to keep the rest of it trimmed regularly, which can become a chore depending on how involved your beard's style is.

When you're starting a beard, regardless of style, do not shave or trim at all for about 6 weeks. It's going to take that long for the old growth and new growth to both fill in, and until then you won't know which areas are patchy and therefore what kind of beard will look best for you. Also the color and texture will change between the beginning and the end of that period, so it's best to just let it do its thing before you start hacking parts of it off.

Depends on the amount of neckbeard you've got. I have a mild amount so it gets whacked back to the stubs every few weeks. The beard gets trimmed up at the same time as my hair. Overall much less work than shaving, mostly because I'm not keeping a particular shape, it ends up looking like a Zach Galifinakis beard.
