so let me get this straight

you come in here, waving some thing around, and then utterly fly off the handle and scream about how the rules are for candyasses when people politely point them out or criticize you in any way

and then justify it by saying it's part of your schtick

not making a point here, just getting the facts

I've tried many times to get back on topic.

Some of these so called defenders of your forums are actually the ones stifling its creativity. I don't really see anyway to save the thread with these "police" around. I wont object to you closing it, I cant believe I made the MASSIVE error of posting a penny arcade fan video in the penny arcade forums. (Might i suggest you enable embedding videos - I would have used that, but im pretty sure these pretentious a-holes would have had something else to say - the only reason I linked back to my site was because there was no way to show the video here within the post).

The thread is lost, that is unless someone saves it. I'd perfer to keep it open for anyone not involved in this DEBATE or for those that dont care about it, to see the video. Its up to you man. I'm done arguing. But ill remain in this thread for as long as its open to talk about prototype and my parody video. I forwarded an email about it to Tycho and Gabe, if they see it I hope the enjoy it.

Your style of humor didn't really work with me. And the review says "What You'll Hate: No multiplayer," but really, this isn't really a game built for multiplayer... I don't remember there being mention of co-op. I don't know, maybe they could've worked something in, but it wasn't really a necessary thing, and if they had the time, there were other things which should have been focused on first.

Also at one point, your Colbert Report The Word sign behind you said, "Your a friggin monkey," which come on man, grammar is important if you're going to have your work taken seriously.

And you're like, "It's fun to run around in the game!" but then you played the GameStop commercial which is just some random dude jumping around, and then pretended it was you, who cares about that? Show cool running around in the game.

I thought it was weird you thought the city was lifeless, there were always lots of people and vehicles everywhere, more than in many open world games like it

And the side missions were fun, but you complained about wanting another be good or be bad system, which is stupid. That's not who Alex Mercer is, he's a goddamn crazy jerk who doesn't give a shit about that, which your sign was right there, that would be dumb.

Your angry style doesn't really seem genuine either. The Angry Video Game Nerd does it better, and funnier. So that is my review of your review.

There is a nice Prototype thread too if you'd like to actually chat about the game

I didn't find it all that amusing, personally.

The impression I got was kind of the same impression I get from your average high school video where everyone involved is so worked up about how "this is going to be so fucking funny, yo" that no one stops to think about proper comedic timing.

Delivery needs some work. There's some awkward, unrehearsed-type pauses scattered around ("you can karate kick [um...] helicopters"), but in particular, the first panel of that comic is more casually informative and the second panel always struck me as having a relatively calm (but punctuated) tone, with a bit of a dramatic pause before the last panel (which turned out fine in the video). PA in general has a subtle, quirky delivery to it that got lost in translation somewhere. Outside of that, it looks okay.

    Clearly.
I use words like EFFING, FRIGGIN, FUH-BUH-GILLION on purpose, thats the way I talk and ive made it my style, if grammar like that gets your panties in a bunch thats a shame.

Making Videos like these - well its fun. If I started to make my videos more like someone else's whats the point?
And since your talking about my show and my style specifically - I think that even if you dont like the prototype video im sure ive got something that might peak your interest. Ive done everything from Sins of a solar empire (space pirates, fighting admiral ackbar) all the way to total war (Period costumes, line infantry battles). If your going to be biased against me because you think im whoring - Do it.

But I think we offer something unique, though time and time again - someone with the association skills of a 2nd grader makes the comparison to yahtzee or AVGN. I dont mind them (as an internet personality with a show on gaming they are bound to happen), its just when they go so far as to call the show a rip-off - thats when you know their true goal. Other than being "angry" or having angry in our name, we dont have too many similarities in format.

I'm Glad you guys enjoy AVGN's stuff, he's pretty good (though I enjoy his older stuff alot more). Got the opportunity to with with him on a video, it's called "the epic fight" (floating around on my site and at nostalgia critics). He's a pretty quiet guy in person, reserved, but always thinking. If you ask me though I think he's getting burned out on AVGN, which is why hes started Board James, etc. His passion is filmmaking, the video game thing just took off first.

The thing with AVGN is that he has been doing this his whole life, where-as ive only been doing it since roughly October and only took it seriously since April.

Anyways, thanks to everyone who gave it a shot - if you didnt like it thats cool cant please everyone right?

Effing, friggin, and whatever that other word is supposed to be are perfectly acceptable. So are colloquial usages of yer, or you-ins, or other intended misspellings that also carry clear and pronounceable differences. Things like the your/you're misspelling are more annoying, due to the fact that there is no difference between the two when pronounced, there remains only a difference in the written word's meaning. It then becomes not an issue of style, but what I would consider to be a lack there of. (Alternately, it could be a style of illiteracy. I suppose were you attempting to portray yourself as a character from the early 1900's that didn't have a firm grasp of the written word, it would be more understandable.)
And then there's leet speak, but at least leet speak is often pronounced with a slight variation on its mainstream counterpart word.

(yeah thats what it is, don't pretend this is about it being a tribute)

Joe do you actually know what pretentious means?

Also you should really consider changing your name to something more appropriate, your review style isn't really angry. How about Bland Joe or Awkward-Delivery-Robbing-The-Line-Of-Any-Comedy-Joe? While i'm at it, it's a problem with a lot of the videos on www.thatguywithglasses.com but a well written review can be quite funny, but the stupid sitcom and "wacky" characters crap that you guys seem obsessed with is always more tedious than amusing.

What threats did I Issue? Please leave this topic as your obviously trying to paint me out to be some kinda bad guy attacking all PA users - thats not the case. You were a little late, get here sooner next time. ;)

The irony is that Angry Joe isn't very Angry. He's a parody of angry reviewers and himself, over the top just for the sake of being over the top. Dont like that or any of the talent at TGWTG? Cool. Stick to your favorites, who are they by the way?

    @Jobastion
You know what man? I'm in agreement with you. When you put it like that I certainly don't want to put off anyone with annoying grammar errors - I'll be putting in more effort to grammar/spelling (but yet still retaining the slang) from here on. Thanks man, and i'm not being sarcastic. I feel that the greatest strength is being able to always evolve our format. Some of our older stuff is pretty garbage, but i've been happy with the quality of it lately.

    @JAEF
Oh I don't know about that. Who wouldn't want to know about Predators 3 plot details? Not everything is garbage on the other side. But thats your opinion - pretty sure your just trying to be as big of a douchebag as possible by putting it like that but we all are at some point.

Yeah that should have been threads not threats, my bad.

As for my favorites that'd be Nostalgia Critic, Nostalgia Chick, Linkara, Spoony when he's not doing the tedious 'Dr Insano' routine and Bad Movie Beatdown has it's moments but he's another guy who needs to work on his delivery as his exasperated voice comes off as sounding really fake.

I really don't understand how the 'pretend you're a sitcom with a budget' act got so popular on that site, none of the people on the site are actors, they've got some good reviewers but watching them hamming their way through badly written skits is just tedious padding.

Yep, those are definitely the heavy weights of the site - I now get a feel for what you like best.

I work with all those guys and I can tell you it takes them weeks to make each episode, they actually write and write well - our format is different (I don't read from a script, and only make an outline, and since gaming is so current and there's so much new stuff everyday I have to riff off the cuff just to keep up). I'm no writer as you can tell, I'll get alot of jokes wrong, but I get some right. Bad movie beatdown i've helped with, matthew's only 17 but he knows more about movies that anyone i've ever known. I'm actually starting to look forward to them more than alot of others.

I'm not sure who your referring to with the sitcom? marzgirl? My personal opinion is that i'm not liking all the "let's plays" thats been popping up lately. Very few people beyond spoony can do them well.

It's all free entertainment. I think my stuff is alot better than half of the youtube crap I get linked to everyday, but if I didnt think that I wouldnt be doing this anymore.

Well, you pulled a decent key. I can't imagine it took more than a couple of minutes with Primatte or Keylight considering there wasn't any hair, green clothes or any kind of translucent objects in the frame but hey, a key is a key.

[Edit]On second look, the edges are a little sparkly and his hand passes the edge of frame during the karate kick in the last shot. Were you shooting a 4:2:0 (AVC-HD, XDCAM, HDV) or a 4:2:2 (DVCProHD)? Regardless, make sure to give a bit more edgelight next time and turn off any in camera sharpening to keep noise and halos down.

What i meant by the sitcom line, was the strange fascination some people seem to have with cutting away from the review and going off for a random comedy skit in the middle of the review. I think that you and Mathew seem to have the same problem as far as delivery goes, when you're attempting to convey intense emotions you both slow down too much and over emphasize words, it breaks the flow of the review.

    Ah I see,
My style is over emphasizing, it fits my character - I want people to think EPIC! - so that wont change likely, but I don't think thats' what Matthew is looking for.

The show has evolved into something that I enjoy doing, its got elements from all my favorite things. Family Guy, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, Internet Reviewers like Critic or the Nerd, mixed with parody sketches. Considering we have zero budget and no writers (not even myself) what we put together is great. But we can always improve and will continue to do so. Right now i'm looking to expand/evolve a new show format to keep up with the crazy fast pace of gaming done in the style of TheYoungTurks, some really awesome no-nonsense political commentary.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, this is what I was looking for, glad we got past all that BS before.
Keep it coming, even negative stuff. But i'd perfer advice on how to improve the show and videos like this.

You seem like you know what your doing. We shot in full HD on the HV30. Our lighting consisted of 2 500watt work lamps from home depot ($15 bucks a piece) and 1 green screen from ebay. Like I said Zero Budget. Without a $800 3-point lighting system or ANY Fill light at all, you've got to admit it came out pretty well - surprised even me.

I placed a box on the floor and put another green screen over it and sat on it while doing the karate kick - pretty tough not to get a shadow on it without wires holding me up. Then I just animated the mask to "kick" from left to right and used a few FX.

Work lamps? An HV30? Jesus. Do you have a local film co-op in the area where you can rent some Bluebells/Redheads? Do you have any access to silk, opal, 250, etc. kind of diffusion? Can you buy another work light? Do you mind shooting 30p instead of 24p to eliminate interlacing artifacts?

Ill check the settings, I shouldn't be shooting that that film-like cinema mode at 24p. But for the rest of it, can you cover the cost of the rental? can you pay for the diffusion? I'd prefer boxes rather than umbrellas - thanks.

Do you have any example of any productions you've worked on, i'm curious. Appreciate the feedback by the way.

Well, I mean, Chimera soft boxes are preferable to lowel umbrellas for sure, but I don't know how much they'd rent for in your area. it also really depends on the application. I think I'd use a Lowel for shoulder edgelight and a softbox for the screen, but that's just off the top of my head without a waveform or a light meter in front of me. I know that we've got film co-ops up her in Soviet Canuckistan that're pretty cheap, but I don't know what it's like in your area.

Sorry, I don't have any of my good stuff online right now because I'm working on getting things into festivals. They want world premiers, which means Youtube, Vimeo, etc. is a no go.

If you're putting up too much content to make sure it's amusing for its entire duration, you're putting up too much content. Quality > quantity. Slow down, do a second pass, and make sure you're putting your best foot forward with every modicum of content you put out on the internet. It'll take more time, yes, but things on the web can stick around for-fucking-ever. Good or bad.

Angry dont you realize that people are gonna see this thread and be turned off immediately by your productions? Or are you just an awesome troll trying to be this other dude? Cause now people can use this thread as evidence for anything and roflstomp the debate.

You should really stop when you say you would.

The video was absolutely awesome. You really need to post it in SE++, they'll love it and it'll get you a lot of traffic for your site.
