The "TheMorningStar's Current Temp portfolio / What's on you easel?" Thread!

I've noticed that people who paint in RL are pretty rare around here, so how about a thread dedicated to that? Also, I finally photographed some of my oil paintings to start to lay out my portfolio. The pics are terrible and only temporary, I know a professional photographer who'll shoot them for me soon.

So, here's the paintings:

took some detail shots of the self portrait, but it still doesnt look right. i painted it with a bunch of unatural colors, but the camera just seems to like to pick up the yellows mostly. I don't like the way it looks here, but I really like it in person.

And what I'm currently working on:

Might be hard to tell what's going on in that, it's Brock being taken over by the symbiant. Im just copying straight out of an old 5 part series from 1995. Cant remember the name of the artist, but he's stuff is really stunning. Since it's summer I decided to lay off the academic stuff, and try some stuff for fun.

So, nondigital painters REPRESENT!

Anyways, C&C very appreciated of course and what are YOU guys working on?

edit: Ah, christ. Your easel, not you easel...can I change that? If not, can a mod please! Thanks

i really really want to learn how to paint but it's so goddamn hard!
Just at a glance, I'm going to say that the point that stands out as being weakest to me is your composition. You have a lot of dead center, kinda bland compositions. I'm looking at third from the bottom and the first and second from the top.

But mostly I'm just giving you asspats because I suck so hard with oil paints.

If anything I'd just really work hard on the drawing. That and light your still lifes with something. It looks like you're doing them in natural light which is great, but its a bit more difficult to work in and turn form convincingly. Hit them with a direct light so theres obvious shadows and light. The high contrast makes form way more obvious and its much easier to learn from.

Edit: Not to mention high contrast creates awesome mood and drama.

Thanks for the advice goes. You're right about the compositions, but I've been on a bit of a Morandi kick lately, so that's where most of my still life inspiration comes from. Im trying to get a mix of Cezanne and Morandi.

Anyways, here's an update to the comic painting. This thing is taking way longer than I thought. I'm having surgery surgery on friday so Im working against the clock. Im hoping I can atleast get all the black down before then.

Also, it seems I greatly over estimated the amount of oil painters on here. :(

    :(

Well, one last update here and then I'm going to assume oil painting is dead. Once I'm in the hospital I'm not going to be able to keep the thread going anyways.

Really? No one here working on a painting?

Plenty of people paint here, and lots do multi mediums.
I'm thinking of dabbling in gouache in the near future....maybe.

I dont touch oil, mostly due to time constraints and fumes. Yes yes low-odour turps etc. I'll give it a go soon though. A friend of mine works in oil and constantly yaps about how 'buttery' they are. I DONT CARE FOR BUTTER*!

    *Obvious lie.
