Hey wargamers, I'm looking to try a hex-and-counter wargame, but I have no experience with them. I'm looking for a good starter game.

Things I prefer:
-fairly cheap
-smaller scale (board = 1 battle, unit = 1 soldier or 1 squad)
-shorter game length
-ground-based (not exclusively naval or air)
-solo playability
-fairly simple rules
-traditional hex-and-counter (not miniatures, cards, etc. such as BattleLore or Tide of Iron)

Things I don't care about:
-setting/era (ancient, modern, future, fantasy, etc.)
-how old the game is
-the designer or publisher

Any recommendations? Please describe the product a bit for me. Thanks in advance!

Playing: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword, Odin Sphere
