i've got a friend who's traveling to China in about a month. he's bringing his laptop with him and intends to connect it to local networks there. he's worried though that the Chinese authorities might try to install whatever spyware program they're using now to monitor everyone's computers onto his PC.
is there an easily configurable piece of firewall software this guy can use for Windows XP? preferably free, but he's willing to pay for the software, if needed.

You router should generally do about what you need it to. Norton 360 is not a bad option but a lot of people will yelp because its norton. Best advice. Stay away from "questionable" sites.

Norton sucks because it's highly effective at not letting your computer do anything... so it might be a good idea in this case.

360 Has been great for the people I know that have used it.
Norton 360 might be good...but are there any free solutions lurking out there?

You could just use the windows based one. Also make sure you install windows defender.
