Most of the game is pretty great, but it devolves into a bit of combat slog towards the end. The sewers and the (later) hotel are dullllll.

I've heard the Fire Axe is one of the best melee weapons in the game, but according to the stats on them, the Knife only has 4 less potential damage on it for me.

Is it really worth switching away form the Knife? I love how fast it is and how twirly and slashy I am with it.

4 less damage is about half of a strong vampires health bar.

I meant it has 4 less "potential" damage...the knife shows 24 potential damage (and usually does about that per hit) and the fire axe shows 28.

Most of the vampires I've fought so far seem to take about 10-11 swipes of the knife to kill.

Yes, it's worth it. The change in reach is pretty significant, the extra damage is nice, and the animation seems faster to me.

Is that why Santa Monica feels so lifeless and barren compared to the other hubs then? There's only a few buildings you can go in and very little quest content.

It's worth it just for the change to the stealth kill animation you get from the fire axe/bush hook.

The stealth billhook kill is amazing, I never get tired of that. It's especially great when you use it out of obfuscate and dematerialise back into the surroundings afterwards.

Bonus points if you're a Malk and wearing the big fur coat and Dr Seuss hat. It's a chilling image.

I love Bloodlines, but let's not pretend that Troika weren't doomed.

I believe part of the problem was that they had been repeatedly sent updates of the source engine that necessitated constantly putting everything on hold while they quashed new bugs and fixed their old content. DON'T WORRY TROIKA BROS I GOT YOUR BACK

I sincerely doubt that it's that easy to point fingers.

    Development processes are hard.

Bloodlines is a very very VERY complex (and magnificent) game which wasn't easy to put together.

The publisher was Activision. The technology was questionable, what with all the Source Engine debacles, changes and modifications.

Troika as a group has a history of disfunctionality what with the Interplay days and all. Boyarski as the CEO had some sort of psychosis by the time Troika dismantled - I doubt it was because he was sitting on a couch lazing out and refusing to complete the Santa Monica hub.

Generally just many many factors working against the actual final product.

That it ever shipped was a fucking miracle.

why acknowledge the complexity of the world when it's clearly DEMONIC VALVE'S fault

    yeeeeeeeeeeeee

On a serious note, I didn't realise troika were only 11-13 dudes, which makes the game's emergence even more remarkable

The Japanese references in the game are mostly a joke at the gaijin otaku (one of the computer's passwords in the net cafe is "subarashi", as well as the contents on the computer being fucking hilarious).

The computer in the net-cafe, the katana inclusion, the demon hunter girl, etc. They're both homages and digs at the culture.

At least half the fun of finding a new melee weapon was to see what it did on a stealth kill even if you never touched it again.

One thing I feel this game lacks is a bonus to jump height when using Celerity.

I feel like it'd be very vampire-like to be able to jump supernaturally high in certain situations. not that the game world is designed to reward such a thing, but it would be cool if it was.

That'd actually be potence. There's a lot of cool stuff you could do with potence that didn't make it in.

Because it has weak base damage, low lethality, and if I recall correctly, you can't stealth kill enemies with it. It sucks.

It was the same animation as the tire iron, but more amusing because it looked like you were using the arm in the same way you use your own in the unarmed stealth kill.
