Is Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries a good game for a person with no exposure to the series and no joystick? It's stand-alone, right? It's on Goozex and I want to play something with VERY stompy robots. The ones in Shogo are hardly stompy at all.
Sure, as long as you have watched the fuckawesome intro to Mechwarrior 2 about 1000 times. Then feel free to play whatever you want.
M4 Vengeance opening video is pretty fuckawesome as well
My favorite intro was the MW3 one. It was a lot longer and looked better then the MW2 one, but ditched the lame Vietnam-era helicopter helmets and acting of the MW4 one. Plus, the Mad Dog was horribly redesigned in MW4, never liked that.
idk I thought the lame live action had a certain charm to like, like C&C games.
Except the customization was extremely limited. And you couldn't dismember people in any helpful way. And you were using big guys in armor, not Battlemechs.
If this is a new Mechwarrior game for the PC I hereby swear I will eat my own PPC.
This thread is about PC gaming not old school macs. :P

I picked up MW4 Mercs a few months back after hearing that despite its departures and omissions it was fun, especially with the fan patches for it.
Can't get it to run at all, and my system is actually rather robustly stable with other games. No matter how it's installed or patched it just fatally crashes on start.
Anyway, any new Battletech or Mechwarrior game is likely to be enjoyable. If it's wound up back in the hands of someone from FASA, we should all be overjoyed.
Had a thought: Mechwarrior was originally the tabletop RPG version of Battletech, which was a tabletop wargame (whose only commercial video game analog is MechCommander). Only the first MechWarrior comes close at all to RP'ing someone who lives in the universe; the rest have actually been much more straight battlemech simulators. Which will we see this time?
My earliest gaming memories are of playing Mechwarrior with my dad. It holds a very special place in my heart.
This news is the best almost-birthday-present ever.
All I can hope is that they keep it relatively close to its simulator roots rather than making it an arcade-y blastfest with mechs. If they do that it is so fucking sold.
I am calling my friends so hard right now telling them to watch these 12 second videos. We spent so much time on Mechwarrior 2, 3, and 4 LAN that it is fucking ridiculous.
Oh, and as for the best intro, it is clearly Mechwarrior 3. That's like all you need to know about the game right there. And I still have the entire script for it memorized. Creeps my friends out, heh.
(1) Install Mercenaries
(2) Patch to PR1
(3) Run MekPak 3.02a
(4) Run MekPak Patch 3.02b
(5) Patch with High Definition Patch
edit- The mods do a number of things, one of which is add about 30-40 new mechs, tons of new weapons, new camo options, some what better AI, and interface changes.
edit 2: In fact the MetTek team is still working on mods for MW4:Mercs. They are curretnly working on MP4 which adds a number of things including free reticle targeting. So you do not have to move your entire torso to target something.
edit 3: Hey look a video showing off the new mechs and such. MekTek

The best Battletech game ever was the Multiplayer BattleTech 3025 game that had an open beta, and then was subsequently canned by EA Games. You can see pics of it here at the archive. I was in the open beta, and it was one of the coolest BattleTech experiences ever (right up there with the Virtual Worlds pods). It was essentially a BattleTech MMO where you owned your own Mech and participated in Inner Sphere battles for territory. You got cash for running missions (against other players) and you can fight for any of the Houses (or StarCom, I believe). The cash was used to upgrade to bigger and better 'Mechs. It was amazingly true to actual BattleTech rules (although they had to tone down the head shots, since people were picking off other 'Mechs with AC-2 shots to the head, making the Blackjack one of the better medium Mechs to acquire). The "Alternate" Inner Sphere that they had in the Beta had House Liao conquering the lion's share of the Inner Sphere, with Kurita as a tiny sliver.
At the time, I was playing tabletop BattleTech almost weekly, so this was like a continuous infusion of illegal drugs right into my bloodstream. Good times.

A new real proper sim mechwarrior game would be the best thing ever. Crossing my fingers here.
Also more Clans please. Back to the good stuff, none of these mercenary or inner sphere scum.
Screw Clanners, Mercs are where its at. Managing your pilots, buying new Mechs, managing funds. . . Ooooh.
Which reminds me I should probably hire new pilots on my MW4: Mercs campaign. :P
Clans 4 life. The clan bidding system for battles is something I think would've made for a great gameplay element (probably more for the MechCommander series) that never really has been explored afaik.
Forget managing freeborn scum! Lets manage genes and make perfect warriors!
New Mechwarrior? Yes please. I've got my Steel Battalion controller all ready to go.
Though I'm not sure why people are so adamant that it be PC ONLY, as long as it's designed with the PC in mind I don't see a problem with it being multiplatform. Because really, although it's a sim, the Mechwarrior games aren't that complicated that you couldn't adequately translate the controls to a console controller.

Maybe, but you'd end up with something twice as complicated as:

I don't think it's about what kind of game is possible on the consoles. It's more about what kind of game is likely if it isn't PC only.

Wow, this looks damn sexy. That's right. 12 second clips look sexy.
I'll also take this moment to point out that I would also love a new Heavy Gear, thanks.
Mercs would have the most single player content, right?
Yea. It has an actual branching campaign that lets you hop around planets and buy weapons and Mechs and pilots and all that jazz.
And Solaris VII, which is awesome.
Also some of the things you do in a mission ie: letting an enemy convoy go, destorying enemy convoy, not helping allies, saving allies; may come back and help/hinder you latter on.

Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit! Mechwarrior 2 is one of my all time favourite games, and set the bar for mech games for me. Far too many of them since have fallen short in one way or another (though there have been victories over the years).
Consider me pants-explodingly intrigued.

Did you ever try that exploit for the Clan duel where you just take out all of the Clan leader's weapons on her Mad Cat Mk II and then go destroy her command binary? Cause they're all programmed to honor zellbrigen and won't attack you until her Mech actually goes down.

About a year ago I asked the DP9 guys if there were any plans for a new game. They said they were waiting for the current agreement with Activision to expire and would be looking into shopping the IP around after that.

Seriously?
I brought two lances to that fight and generally had an easy time. I usually order my pilots to concentrate fire on a single Mech.
The mission I am on right now is the one where the Capellan(sp?) leaders are meeting with the Skye Separatists and you get to stand in the Honor Guard.
I just cannot beat that one.

The problem with the game was the Solaris rules. The idea behind them is to balance every weapon so that something like an AC/2 isn't horribly outpaced by the later ACs, but you run into the issue where it does nearly the same damage as an AC/10 with like three times the range. It's why the Raven was so disgusting in the light bracket; the LRM-5 was as good as any other LRM, and outranged anything that would drop against it.
So, how about that Crysis Mechwarrior mod, eh? It looks like they're making pretty good progress on it. And more importantly, unlike most mod teams, they actually are really good about consistent updates

Or if that is too pricey then I think you would be good with MW4: Mercs. Though I may be biased since it is my fav.
