So, how about that Crysis Mechwarrior mod, eh? It looks like they're making pretty good progress on it. And more importantly, unlike most mod teams, they actually are really good about consistent updates
Meh, it doesn't exist to me until it's done.
Which is good, cause Crysis still runs like a hog on my system.
*Of course the very next mission I ran crippled half my lance, wrecked a whole bunch of expensive guns in the process and gave me a great view of the token scout mech being potted by missile fire and ppcs when it crested the wrong ridge.
And I almost got blown up by a great big tank while running interference for a Thanatos with only one good leg.
Yeah, exactly that - Battletech always seemed odd to me. If they have weapons so powerful that you have to vent off waste heat constantly, how the hell do they not shoot through the other mechs outright, every time? I could never figure out how the setting explained walking tanks within its own logic.
Well, the armor's also very powerful. It's not an adamantium bullet situation. 8-)
Which is good, 'cause then Mech pilots would never remember anything!
Perhaps you can offer insight to the big hang-up I've always had. Why many-ton humanoid mechs within the world itself? I mean, I get the real-world explanation (mechs + giant guns = good) but within the universe itself, why'd they develop the technology?
I think the reasons are as much social as they are technological. The various nations in Battletech all operate under feudalism. Thus, favoring Battlemechs is a very logical thing for them to do.
If you made a more conventional army, with lots of infantry and tanks and such, it would require arming the peasantry. And this obviously means a higher risk of revolt and such. However, if instead of building five tanks you build one giant robot that you yourself pilot, it means that ultimate power never leaves your hands. And it is far easier to keep the peasants in line when you can level a couple of city blocks if they get uppity.
Battlemechs are, quite simply, the ultima ratio regum of the Inner Sphere.

While racing light mechs, your Urbanmech comes in second place, but only because it ran out of ammo.

Dont get the wrong idea, Battlemechs are very vulnerable to air attacks and even tanks.
Basically Battlemechs came to be because they was using mechs for construction. THen someone was like 'I"m going to put a gun on this!' and lo' and behold you have a battlemech!
You know, I really fucking hope this game isn't set after the Dark Age time skip.
I REALLY hate you for reminding me of that possibility.
Eh, post time-skip isn't all that bad. Just skip the retarded "random splinter groups having it out with lumbermechs" period that, for some godforsaken reason, they used to introduce the setting.
That said, it really depends on who's running the show. It'll probably be set during the Jihad or possibly be a historical. If Weisman's heavily involved, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it were DA-era.
Anyway, provided this is actually MW5, I'm about 90% sure that the mech in no.2 is the redesigned Warhammer. Or possibly even an oldschool Warhammer, now that they got the rights to the art back.
New Mechwarrior? Yes please. I've got my Steel Battalion controller all ready to go.
Though I'm not sure why people are so adamant that it be PC ONLY, as long as it's designed with the PC in mind I don't see a problem with it being multiplatform. Because really, although it's a sim, the Mechwarrior games aren't that complicated that you couldn't adequately translate the controls to a console controller.
Maybe, but you'd end up with something twice as complicated as: [comic]
Not really.
I got through MW4 with a keyboard and mouse and that didn't require much more than the throttle and the jump and coolant keys. If I had a controller, it probably would've worked just fine on that.
I managed to get MW2 Mercs working not too long ago, too. Most of the stuff that requires a third hand ceases to be an issue once you have a joystick with four axes, and the rest pretty much seemed to be MFD related, and the overly-clunky jump controls.
Mad Dog's > all. Loved that mech from day 1. Even named my first internet alias after it, even though it lead to a lot of people thinking I picked it cause of trucking or something :x
My top faction is Clan Wolf, though I also have a soft spot for Ghost Bear (see mech above :P). The Inner Sphere faction I like the most is Fed Suns if I had to pick one, but I'm defiantly a clanner first.
-edit-
I kinda blame the books for the factions I like. The Blood of Kerensky books painted Clan Wolf in a decently favorable light imo. I also have this book from a Ghost Bear Elemental perspective, and all the books during the Fed Com civil war seemed to be on Davion's side. Young and impressionable when I read them, oh well.

I had the same horrifying thought around the time he posted that.
I think he's some sort of evil spirit.
Are they even doing that anymore? I stopped seeing the books in the bookstore months ago
Pretty much dropped until Catalyst Games Lab gets around to writing about it, it seems.
They're still in the middle of the jihad, with another year or so's worth of material on that, then the wars of reaving seems to be the next arc up.
And then 50 or so years of other history to get through. Unless they decide to do another "20 year update" style thing, it'll be a few years before anything new comes up.

If I can't have seperate keys for "recenter torso", "recenter legs to torso", weapon groupings, manual and automatic shutdown systems with overrides, and 7 different targetting commands then WHY BOTHER?
It should have the fuck you attitude of hardcore sim games developed in eastern europe and should make me want to buy a second monitor and a TrackIR.
Did the cool mechs come back after the lumberjack wars?
I took one look at them and left the setting for dead.
Yeah. There were military reductions across the board.
But, Successor Houses being Successor Houses, kept a lot of things in storage.
Its not exactly post clan-war levels, but it isn't exactly like the 3rd succession wars where most everything were 300 year old family heirlooms kept together with chewed gum.
Man, I played such an insane amount of Mechwarrior 4 back in the day. I would put gauss rifles on everything and just shoot the legs as much as possible.

This is always a great sci-fi explanation; human beings make emotional decisions and are generally crazy. I can dig that.
Also, this thread made me dig up my copy of Heavy Gear II. I do miss mech simulation games.

Mad Dogs are terrible. One of the most heat inefficient designs ever.
Timber Wolves are nice, obviously. I also like Centurions.
My favorite faction is totally Clan Wolverine. Even though they aren't really in anything or do anything. But that just means you can fill in the gaps yourself.
After that Kell Hounds and Northwind Highlanders (the real ones, not those crappy DA ones) all the way.

(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
It also needed less 14-16 year old boys. :P
I remember when those Microsoft reps I met at PAX 05 told me that there would likely never be another Mechwarrior game.
Oh how my heart swells with joy.
too bad nobody plays either anymore

In terms of factions: Jade falcon for the clans, and Daconis combine for the dragons

I never like it much because it looses the smooth curves of the Timber Wolf and is all jagged and angular. Which is pretty ugly.
