Hello! I have had this question, buggin me for quite some time. When I was young, I had an Atari console. a quick google research tell me it was the Atari 2600 (the second model). I also had games. I remember frogger really well, but I also remember a strange game, but not the title.
You controlled the player, who was I think, just a square. so there was the screen, a dot in the middle, and "doors" up left down right. so I guess it was some kind of labyrinth. Let's say you went right. maybe it was a room! but maybe there was color line moving all around. FLASHY lines. and I think you had to go trough those line to the other side of the room.
yeah, pretty vague. Also, I'd like to remember what the title was to this other game. My friend had a "better console" so I'm guessing it was something between Atari and the Nintendo and we played a game where you were a prehistorical man. he walked around doing something and sometime ate chicken leg. when he ate little heart piece, his head become bigger and had a bit of an heart shape.
oh and to give you some time period, I'm guessing this was around 1989-1993

Thanks! no mysteries could go unresolved with a H/A thread!
It's also possible that it's Berserk, but you control a humanoid in that one.
Actually, you know what I think it might be, now that I think of it? One of the Swordquest games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swordquest
edit: in particular, look at these screenshots. I think the rainbow line stuff you're talking about is the "Leo Waterfall" action sequence.
