Remembering a song you've forgotten entirely

So a few days ago I had my iPod on shuffle and it played something from my library I hadn't ever listened to particularly carefully before. This was the first time I had really focused on the song, and I remember really digging the lyrics for some strange reason. It didn't have a particularly catchy tune or anything (in fact, I think it might have sounded like it was from my parents' time, but then again maybe it was just acoustic). I really want to find this song, but unfortunately I absentmindedly started a new playlist before checking the song's title and artist. I thought I'd be able to find this song pretty easily, since it's on my iPod somewhere and I could google the lyrics I remembered. But I was busy and now four days have gone by and I all I can remember is that at a few points the singer mentions a house that you/she hasn't been to so it's not tainted with your/her past memories... or something. Basically I can barely remember anything about it. This was made worse when I tried to go through a few hundred iPod songs to find it--the more wrong songs I go through the further it slips from my mind. Even typing up this post seems to have pushed it even further away :?.

So I need some way to pinpoint this song. Here's what I know for sure: It's one of 3,000 songs on my iPod, it's sung by one man, and the word "house" is in the lyrics (I have some other guesses as to what was in the lyrics--neighborhood, town, body--but house is the only word I remember hearing 100%). What I need to know is the best way of going about finding this song, given that the harder I search the more I seem to forget about the song. Right now I'm sure that if I listened to it I'd recognize it, but I'm worried that manually going through my whole iPod is going to destroy that ability. I know this is silly and trivial and I should just give it up (I mean, I've forgotten basically everything, why do I even care anymore?). But not being able to find it has been driving me nuts. I'm assuming there's no tool out there that would let me search lyrics of my iTunes library. I'm just worried that if I take one more step in in any way but the most efficient direction I'm going to forget the song entirely. Tips on how best to go through my iPod or tips on some mental tricks for remembering/not forgetting would be appreciated.

And although it's a long shot, if the song I described sounds familiar then feel free to guess. But I've basically forgotten enough that I doubt it's possible anyone here could get it just through my description. I think the singer lists a few things/places where this girl's memories can't hurt him because she was never there, and it ends with this house she'd never been to. But at this point I'm only half certain that's what it even about.

Try eliminating things it's definitely not to narrow the list to something that would be manageable to search through.

Start with genre. While you might not know what genre it's labeled under, you can probably guess as to which it definitely is not under.

Then eliminate any songs on playlists you currently use (as I'm assuming you'd probably recognize it if it was on one of those).

Then just start eliminating artists it's definitely not. If you're not sure about an artist, just move on.

Hopefully by the end of this you'll have whittled the list down to a size you could see yourself actually searching through. Still a pain in the ass, but the best way I can think of.

Both guesses weren't it, sorry. They both fit my description, but unfortunately my description sucks.

For now I'm going to get to work on whittling down my iTunes library and see how many songs I can rule out for sure.

If you sync with iTunes, can't you just go into "recently played" and look for the time when you were playing it?

There is also some Chris Cornell song that fits your description, either with Audioslave or solo.

Unfortunately, "this is a good house, place, etc. because it's not tainted by your memory" is a common theme in songs, and there are a fair amount of them with similar lyrics.

My guess is Clifford T. Ward - Stains

If you were here with me
You'd know how your love stains
I got ink all on my fingers
    From words I can't explain
This solitary life is turnin' me about
My thoughts they all seem tainted
And the stains they won't come out
Been too long inside a colour that was fast
Now the dye 's run out, stainin' up my past.
    It's not too late
T' put this heart of mine in some shape
Come and wash away this heartache, and pain
    Don't let it stain.
If you were here with me
You'd know your love still stains
    Traces of your make-up
    Pillow cases, eyebrow crayons
Broken glasses, cryin' tears and fingers bled
Down upon the carpet where the green turned into red
It's been too long inside a house that's full o' you
With nothin' left to show - memories seeping through.

    It's not too late
T' put this heart of mine in some shape
Come and wash away this heartache, and pain
    Don't let it stain.
Walkin' aimlessly from room to room
Where the air is stained with your perfume
    Pictures on the wall
    Seem to shine no more
And the colours are no longer true.
    It's not too late
T' put this heart of mine in some shape
Come and wash away this heartache, and pain
    Don't let it stain.
    It's not too late
T' put this heart of mine in some shape
Come and wash away this heartache, and pain
    Don't let it stain.
    (Repeat and fade).

    That's it! You're incredible.

For the record, the actual lyrics:

This is a good street. We never walked it. You never held my hand as we crossed it. We never stopped along here to light a cigarette.
    This is a good street.

This is a good house. It wasn't our home. It never scuffed you here on this threshold. I never waited for you by the window.
    This is a good house.

This is a good room. You never slept here. You can't betray the faith that is kept here and then no more tears will be wept here.
    This is a good room.

This is a good bed. We never laid here. You can't erase the love that was made here. And a love that's love will not fade here.
    This is a good bed.

This is a good heart and you can't take it. You can bend it, bruise it and shake it. But no my dear you can't break it.
    This is good heart.

    This is a good bed.

    Tis is a good room.

    This a good house.

    This is a good street.
    This is a good street.
    This is a good street.

You're a godsend, I never would have looked at any Mudcrutch songs.

EDIT: I'd also like to mention I've enjoyed some of the other songs mentioned in this thread just as much the one I was looking for. Thanks!

Just make iTunes find it for you. Make a smart playlist that only contains songs played within the last 5 days. Then go through and find it.

For future reference: is it possible to do that with my iPod? I think I tried that option on my computer, but it looked like it only contained those songs that were recently played in iTunes (from my computer), even though I had synced my iPod. I might have been mistaken. For some reason I didn't think to sync my iPod again and see how the list looked from there, though.
