I just ordered this from amazon, should be here this friday. Should get to play it next week monday. Good times good times. I'm going to gamefaqs the hell out of this now.
How does the sword upgrading work now? Is it better than 2's? I assume it's somewhat better, seeing as you get to keep your money throughout each game.
I really hope it's less random than 2's
As much as I liked 2's sword customization better than 1's, it's based entirely around luck of the draw whether you even get a positive bonus or not
I havent done much upgrading but it seems more like 1. Also you can revert the changes if it sucks.
The sword making on the otherhand is totally awesome. Also I love that the samurai western accessory customizer is in this too.
Awesome. I totally can't wait to get this.

Am I correct in reading that there's no time limit in this version?
I loved WOTS2, but I always felt handicapped by the amount of time I had ingame. I ended up spending most of it just slaughtering one side or another after I beat the main endings, to give one side total control of the town and harvest swords.

The ability to freely dick around would be great.
There is a clock but I don't know if there is a day limit or not.

Well, I'm still playing Brutal Legend and due to my work schedule, all the stores are closed by the time I get home. I won't be able to get this until at least tomorrow
So, to anyone that has played through to get an ending: Do all endings let you keep your swords still? Or are there endings that end in your death and cause you to lose everything?
You keep everything after an ending, even if you die in it. You keep everything if you just plain get killed, too.
I hear there's both Japanese and English voices. Is the english dub any good? Usually I'm a sucker for the original japanese voices.
My game keeps turning on english voices and they are pretty bad. The japanese voices fit so much better since only certain people at certain parts have full voice acting.

Nope, no day limit.
My latest game just ended rather ignobly. I was very peaceful, and I went to save a guy who was in trouble, but I said some unhelpful things and pissed him off, and he attacked me. So I figured he wouldn't actually kill me, since I was there to help him. I've had some fights end when I hit 10hp, and they let me live. But no, he just plain murdered me. That's what you get for trying to be a hero.

Wait, you keep your shit even if you die?
Damn, they are making this game way easier, aren't they
That is super fine with me, Japanese game design tends to give me headaches

It makes sense i mean before everyone just reset or whatever to get past it anyway. At least now i can use my awesome swords with out worrying about it.

Maybe they want to try and open the audeince up a bit, its a bit of a shame since that was part of the charm but i dont blame them, I went back to WOTS1 for a bit and even I started to get really pissed off.

Actually if you reset in Way of the Samurai 1 you lost whatever swords you were carrying when you started
The game saves when you start because it's saving that you removed swords from your sword vault, and if you don't beat the game or save at one of the checkpoints you're fucked
I discovered this once
Didn't pick the game up again for almost a year
But yeah, in WotS2 you could save at the map screen, and Japanese game design tends to be "let's put in a mechanic which basically forces the player to soft-reset constantly, that's fun right"

So, guess which of your favorite forum LPers traded some stuff in and can now order a copy of this online? Nope, it's not Helloween or Klyka..
Oh noo what was traded in?
I gave this game a swing last night. Definitely feels faster than WotS1 but the areas are immense. With no one in sight, it's easy to get lost and not know what to do next.
Good thing there's a map feature that lets you teleport around. I joined the Ouka clan for no reason then got killed by some Saizo dude I was trying to talk to. Ouch.
I traded in Raw Danger, Way of the Samurai 1, Katamari Damacy, Blood Will Tell, Jaws Unleashed, Samurai Western, and Zone of the Enders.
Nah, just some PS3 stuff.
Finally got sick of Demon's Souls and Blood on the Sand?

I'll let him know!
I tried to nab the game this week but toys r us didnt have it.
I think he did a fantastic job as well -- did he do the preorder bonus too, or was that someone else?
The what
When I went and asked at Gamestop, she gave me this nice little DVD for free because they had no preorders (because nobody could preorder the game, and thus they got no copies. Haha, what? Nice, GS.), and it's this DVD case with a nice cover, and on the DVD is a character art PDF and a strategy PDF. Strat one looks pretty helpful with some nice info; I can upload it for people who want it.
Only a certain number of Gamestops were chosen to carry the game. As near as we can tell from the store managers Ive talked to, it looks like stores that traditionally sell more of the obscure Japanese titles and whatnot that seem to have been chosen to carry it (at least the 2 stores in my district that got word they were carrying it do... largely because of myself and an employee or two at the other store.) That is by no means officially why or anything... just an educated guess.
Preorders were not available for it, and its going to be limited supply. Our store still hasnt gotten our copies yet, but hopefully we will in the next few days. I kind of want to play it.
Wait. So Gamestop, the company that bitches to you about preordering things in order to actually bother to stock it, is not even doing preorders for this and just (essentially) not carrying it period? But that was their one excuse for not stocking things that aren't Madden/Halo in the first place.
Looks like I'll have to try Fry's later this week, and if that doesn't work then it'll be online time.
Just ordered this since no place around here has it.
RRGH, cannot wait to slice up some innocents and make my own sword.
And then kill more people with my sword.
I always enjoyed that one of the best upgrades in WOTS2 was to kill like 500 people with one sword.
My rating for that game wasn't very high, but boy was it fun.
Any tips for a beginner? I'm running around really really sure what to do. I did play the first two games and it introduced you to some characters right away, but so far I haven't run into anything or anyone that gives me some direction. Maybe I just haven't played enough. I'd still love some hints, though.

Kill everyone. Take their stuff. See what happens? Profit???
I don't have the game yet, but I assume talking to someone by a gate would trigger something. Like the job brokers. Other than that, just seek out unique characters and try to talk to them I guess.
You don't lose your swords? I'm not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, the game is obviously much less frustrating and as a result, "more fun". On the other hand, the risk is removed entirely.
The previous games gave me a sense of mortality, a feeling that is pretty much alien in video games. Sure the "permadeath" was frustrating, but it was so key to making this series what it is. You wouldn't always want to start a fight with a stranger because you never knew just how strong he was. Every fight was risky and running away was necessary at times.

This is pretty much the reason why I think keeping your swords on death is not necessarily a good thing. Trying to kill everyone in WotS1 as a beginner resulted in a quick death and a restart.
I guess I'm preaching to the choir here, but I have mixed feelings over this news. If they ever make a WotS game with online play, I hope they bring back sword drops because that would be the type of game I would play forever.
Question though. If you die, do you start over from the start, or can you reload save points?
Alright, who the fuck put PYRAMID HEAD in my WotS!?
I'm just walking around town at night, minding my own business. I suddenly hear a cry of fright from a nearby villager behind me, and I quickly turn around.
A figure appears out of the fog. It appears to be a man, but his face was covered. No, his whole head was covered by a pyramid shaped straw hat.
"COME WITH ME TO HELL"
And then I was raped.
Next game, he showed up again along with a Samurai Killer who looked exactly like the save guy except he shanks you with twin daggers instead of saving. And they say survival horror was dead.

Hints eh?
Combat: Learn the push/pull system. Keep an eye on the status orb above the enemy head. Hold forward to push through their guard when you're on the offense, but don't do it if their orb is blue. Likewise, if they're attacking keep an eye out and hold back to pull if their orb turns orange/red.
If you're skilled enough, tap guard right when an enemy attack hits you to parry, and there will be an input to enter insta-kill attacks. That mode lasts quite a while and it's great to finish off a large group of enemies, especially for the 100 man battle you get from the old lady at the village.
Exploration: Use the Map feature. The map shows you where you can take jobs, and where events can be triggered. Treat it like GTA in this regard. If you want direction, join a clan at one of the castles, and do as many jobs and events as you can. Use the map to teleport, and be sure to read ALL the notes about jobs in your menu screen for hints.
And yes, you can always just reload a save when you die. But the tension is definitely still there.
Ah, so that's what those orbs mean. That helps. And is it just me or is the parry timing really tough? I'm bad at it.
Also, I much prefer not losing stuff when I die. Sure, it loses some tenseness, but it also loses a whole ton of frustration. That's a tradeoff I'm ok with.
Ah, so that's what those orbs mean. That helps. And is it just me or is the parry timing really tough? I'm bad at it.
I believe they made the timing tougher, but worse comes to worse, it's still mashable. And the payoff is IMMENSE since you can basically insta-kill any group of henchies once your insta-kill mode is activated.
