Man, Instant Kill mode will put fucking hair on your chest. That shit gets tense real quick.

So what does everyone's samurai look like? I'd be interested in whether we gravitate to the same stuff. I've been using head 2/body 16, with a cloth handband and that toothpick thing. I'm kind of sad so many of the outfits are jokey, I would have liked some more styles of armor or kimonos instead of mecha-samurai or tuxes.

Uh... I can't remember what numbers they are (at work) but I'm using the 2nd pony-tailed samurai head (#4 maybe?) and the black kimono/hakama, whichever number that is.
For accessories, I have the two shoulder guards and a bottle of sake at my waist.

Earlier I had the fishing pole and basket. Too bad I couldn't actually use it. That would be boss.

Man that just reminds me that I need to buy more accessories on my next playthrough. I love the customizer straight out of samurai western. Makes it so easy to be a super bad ass samurai.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the eyepatch and the piece of grass in the mouth those make for one awesome samurai.

Depends on what mood I'm in and what type of character I'm playing as in that play-thru. I usually stick with head #2 and the yellow/white kimono (#13 or something?) though - body number 3 is pretty cool for a bad ass bandit type. Cloth headband, toothpick, sake bottle, gourd and if the girlfriend is around - the totoro keychain thing 'cause she finds it cute and silly.

Yknow, this game is a lot deeper than it initially lets on. After some time with it, I can start to see where everything interconnects. It's awesome to see where the ripples in the pond actually originate from, as it were.

Pretty similar, except if someone so much as breathes on you wrong you die. On the other hand, it's pretty epic to storm through a castle and murder your way one by one, classic samurai movie style, to the top.

Exactly. If you're good enough, the game does become a Yojimbo simulator, where you just kinda jump around with your sword for a quick second, everybody hits the ground, you resheath your sword and start walking.

I like to sing the Yojimbo theme when it happens. And I get sad there's no way to make your character do a shoulder twitch.

I assume your partners also die in one hit in Insta-kill mode? I just started my game in that mode before coming to work. It'd make some endings really hard where you have to proceed with someone.

Naw, they've got plot armor for the most part. Unless you hit them yourself. Then they're meat. The endings are hard enough on instant kill, since more often than not you're faced with an unending supply of enemies for x amount of time, all of which surround you if you stand still for too long.

Got this today and played for a couple hours. My samurai is named Eichi Hoba, and at the present time, he's an errand boy for some lady in a nearby town who is offering work. Eliminating bandits who menace the roads, delivering messages.

My first playthrough ended in a humiliating defeat, but that gave me the opportunity to try something besides the cliched "nursed back to health by a preachy villager" origin story, by unsheathing my sword in the opening scene. A far superior introduction to the game followed.

Does anyone know how to fix the annoying glitch where the English voices play even if you've selected Japanese? They're honestly terrible.

Yeah, just switch back to english, then go back and select japanese once more. Agreed on the voices, they're pretty awful. Don't know why they even bothered to include it in the budget, it's not like anyone would choose to play / not play the game depending on whether or not it had english dubbing.

I finally started playing this proper today. I'm loving it. There are so many little things to this game. Right now I'm just hanging around the small village, helping the town people, waiting for more events there to happen. Outside of rice/tax collectors, nothing has really happened yet. I'm hoping something will soon.

Can you get... romantically involved with other characters in this? I apparently "intrigue" the farmer's daughter quite a bit. It seems a bit awkward at this point.

Sounds like the campaign mode in BB2. You only get the best ending if you beat everything without dying. That includes bosses (and gunmen), and hordes of low level ninja. One screw up or mistimed attack though and... perfect run ruined.

Wait, to move the town plot forward, do I really have to take that old lady's ridiculous quest? That seems a bit extreme. I've been kind of waiting for something to happen to the town that forces me to take action in their defense, not actively seek out bloodshed. I'm actually stuck figuring out what to do. There doesn't seem to be any more Inklings around, just this old lady's quest and the recruiters.

The old lady tells me to assassinate a Lord, who always ends up being a body double.

Also, I just got my first partner, Momiji. Is there anything else I can do with them aside from having them follow me around? She's pretty slow, and not very strong, but I couldn't just leave her there alone. She said she was going to kill herself, after all. And if I tell them to go home, where can I find them again, or more specifically, Momiji?

I didn't know there was a one hit kill mode. That's awesome. The combat system actually always bothered me in the original Way of the Samurai, with all the juggling nonsense, and the fact that some enemies took like two minutes of constant slashing to take down. Really pulled me out of the game.

Your first couple thoughts will probably run the lines of 'What the hell, this game kinda sucks" to "What the hell do I do now?"

...But you'll be interested in what all the hype is about. A few embarrassing deaths later, you'll be hooked.

It's really not all that difficult, but it certainly doesn't hold hands.

When Momiji follows you around she has a chance to teach you a new sword technique. The screen will say something like "Momiji is devising something..." and a moment later, you'll learn a technique. It only really happens when you're walking slowly, though. You can find her back at the castle between 12-15:00 I think.

Made it a bit further on my third try, but got in a big fight at the Posting Station. Managed to defeat four samurai before they dropped me. But I have a half-decent sword now, so I'll spend my next attempt leveling and upgrading it.

Momji finished off a highway bandit for me when I was low on health, and I've learned three skills from her. Definitely a welcome traveling companion.

I looked at a guide to find some information on partners and what I can do with them. One of them had a list of the bonuses partners give you, particularly when they finally move in -

Dona - She will steal swords from your sword safe if left home alone.
Ensen - He will occasionally bring you a new sword (added to sword safe).
Hiiragi - If your health is low, she will give you a healing item (food).
Hinagiku - Distracts enemies in battle, will hold on your money, but will also steal some money from you from time to time.
    Kasumi - None.
Kana - She can hold accessories.
Minamo - She can hold items and will occasionally give you a new sword.
    Misaki - She kicks enemies.
Momiji - With full health, she will occasionally grant you a new skill.
Nyanya - Will break swords (kept in sword safe) if left home alone).
Osada - Will let you trade with a dead merchant once each day.
Otome - She kicks dead people and breaks things.
Yukino - She can hold weapons.
Yuzu - She will lower the prices of items in the shops.

I noticed a lot of them are hard to get, though. You have to have rare items and meet a lot of conditions. Momiji was really quite easy to get, on the other hand. She just shows up outside Castle Amani around noon or so, and you just have to apologize to her until she puts away her sword. You can then invite her to come along with you, as she says she doesn't have any other purpose in life (she was even considering suicide).

I guess you can form a romance with your partners, too. After 5-6 days of following you around, if you take them to your house you'll have a new dialog option where you can invite them to move in with you and it turns into a real relationship. You can shorter that time to around 2-3 days by doing partner jobs with them, however. Does anyone know some team job locations?

So blade powder and sword oil. Is it permanent or a temporary buff? Or is it a component for forging. I don't have enough yen to just buy things to test them out yet.

Also, how exactly does death work? My friend says you lose your equipped sword, but keep the other two in your inventory. I haven't died yet, so I'm not sure personally.

They're permanent - honestly, they aren't worth applying since they take up a quality point on your swords. Just get it tempered for either attack or defense (avoid random, I've had nothing but bad experiences with it).

Death isn't all that inconvenient to be honest, other than making you restart. You keep your yen, equipped items and equipped sword.
