Hunh. I have never even remotely heard of this. I'll have to give it a look as a game to play between Borderlands.
Edit: My samurai will be named Roland.
Actually now that I think about it, one of the major Roland stories involves him slicing a guy in half with a blade so sharp that the dude didn't notice until he tried to move and fell apart, that's very storybook samurai.
So blade powder and sword oil. Is it permanent or a temporary buff? Or is it a component for forging. I don't have enough yen to just buy things to test them out yet.
Also, how exactly does death work? My friend says you lose your equipped sword, but keep the other two in your inventory. I haven't died yet, so I'm not sure personally.
They're permanent - honestly, they aren't worth applying since they take up a quality point on your swords. Just get it tempered for either attack or defense (avoid random, I've had nothing but bad experiences with it).
Death isn't all that inconvenient to be honest, other than making you restart. You keep your yen, equipped items and equipped sword.
Sorry, gonna step in here.
Never EVER get your sword tempered for Attack or Defense. Only do Random. There is a trick to getting good swords that will take up a lot of time. I'll list it in steps.
Save before doing this.
1. Do a bunch of jobs for either Omiki Town or the Village, depending on which Dojima you which to visit. This will help your chances of getting good upgrades.
2. Acquire a bunch of money from doing this jobs.
3. Upgrade the sword you want on Random. Do not accept any upgrade that does not equal 20+. Reset if you need to.
The reason is, the maximum upgrade that you can get from Dojima is Att. 15+ and Def. 15+. You want to shoot for as close as you can get, so anything equaling a total of 20 is pretty good. You can keep doing this until you get your sword at max quality, which is five MORE than your actual quality. So, you can get a sword to quality 10/5.
Also, when you get your sword at max quality, you can have Dojima appraise it for a title. At Max quality, you can get the legendary status, which increases Att. and Def. both by 50+.
A sword at 1000 Kills can get another status for Att. +100.
And a sword at a high level, I think, nets you Holy for Def. +100.
My current sword, Legendary Renkotsu, is at 174 Att. and 162 Def. It's enough to take out any one on hard in a couple of hits (except story boss characters).
Hope this helps you guys get good swords!

What sword is everyone rocking? I'm currently building up the long one that pyramid head drops. Its quality is only 5 but that'll just let me get it appraised quicker.
edit: Also what do i need to say to the dojima brother so they'll give up their sweet delicious eggs. edit edit: Also any hints on swords or tactics to handle the huge castle battles on instant kill? Especially when running isn't an option.
I've had good times with a spear on those big battles on instant kill. Other than that, just be a paranoid fucker, and don't attack until you're sure you'll hit. Master pushing and pulling attacks.
Sword-wise, right now I'm using a pair of sharkpart swords, Jaws and Jaws 2.

Are those high attack/def low everything else? Ideally suited for two weapon wielding? Cause i need to get on that as well.
I haven't found a new sword yet, so I'm still using the starting one. Where can I easily find a better one?
Anyway, it's day eight or nine in the game so far and nothing has happened yet. My last inkling was the tax collectors in the town. Will a new inkling just pop up later? I just have to wait it out? I'm currently just going around getting mad cash by doing team jobs with Momiji.

There are some inklings at night as well. Make sure you aren't currently doing a job and they should show up. It also depends on what events you have already done. Tax collectors is very early, so there should be quite a few others around.

Custom built, I call it Daimajin. about 65 attack, 58 defense. Quality 1/5 right now, so plenty of room to upgrade it once I do some missions to improve Dojima's craftsmanship.
Upper stance, but I might make a new sword with the backhanded Ninja stance.

i just realized it'll end up a "legendary" dickbutt. Also beyond the salmon filleting, and extorting the ouka clan. Any other ways to make more money? Something i can buy from a merchant that sells for a lot. So i can kill him afterwards?

Stuff you can buy: Golden eggs, technique/match scrolls, amulets to increase HP. They're really not gonna net you more cash, but the amulets are nifty to boost HP.
Yeah i'm doing that, but 800 yen tech scrolls sell for like 10 yen.

So a couple more questions...
What are the blue/orange dots over my opponent's head?
And does Draw stance have a larger instant kill window? I got my first draw sword and I was killing things like one or two hits (miss first swing, slash/kill with the second) and these guys were near full health.

Not sure what you mean by the second question, but I will answer the first.
Orange means a Push attack by the enemy and blue means a pull maneuver. Basically, pull when you see the orange mark above their head and don't push when they have a blue mark.
You can still attack if they are blue, any attack will do and it will throw them off balance. Just make sure you aren't holding the stick towards them if you do a light attack.
Still haven't settled on a stance. I've crafted two swords now, Daimajin and Jumonji. Upper Stance and Single Stance, respectively. Upper is feeling a bit sluggish against tough enemies, and Single seems to put the weapon's condition at greater risk.
Fortunately, the Dual Stance has an independent moveset, so I'll be trying that out once I've collected some more weapons and don't need the extra weapon slot it takes up.
What's up with the blades on the custom weapons? It's not noticeable during gameplay, just in the closeup when I draw during a cutscene. But Jumonji's blade looks pretty ragged, despite the weapon having a high max quality. And the blade on Daimajin seems to have a serrated, sword-breaker style edge to it near the guard. Looks very out of place on a samurai sword,

As a huge fan of the first two games I've been avoiding this thread in order to try and stop the raping of my wallet that is a part of this season. Alas, I am weak and have ordered this game via the Amazon.
One thing I have to wonder about is the time they picked to release this in the States. I honestly can not think of a worse time. If It was released a month before or after now I would have preordered it and picked it up day one. As it stands by the time most people can fit it into their budgets it will be impossible to find a copy.
Got my first ending today, and apparently the Records screen is now glitched on my save. Locks up the whole system if I access it. Everything else seems to work, just not Records. Apparently it's a very common glitch in this game, so I might just say screw the records and keep going, with my completed playthroughs (the endings are numbered for reference) copied down to a pad of paper.

Yeah I've got the same glitch, though Records will work once in a while - but I can't access it after loading a game in progress.
So after siding with the clan with the guys wearing the red thongs, I did a couple of event with them and then they had a party with stolen sake froma merchant, and I thought that would offend jins sensibilties so he decided to take down the whole clan.
Well I managed to get about a dozen and itsune, grabbed her sword when it dropped and then was cut down.

I'm sad that $50 is considered budget price this generation, especially with showstopping bugs like the above. On the other hand, it's fair to pay that much to a small company going out on a limb to bring this here, so I'll deal.
Bought the game, had it shipped to my address in the States. I'm not even sure when I'll ever get to play it. But I couldn't chance it disappearing of the face of the Earth in a couple of months.

Mine is my Japanese family name (Hotta).
Everything I've heard sounds like it's an improvement over both of the previous games
I never thought that Way of the Samurai 3 would be the game that makes me buy a PS3, but there it is
PSN ID : DetectiveOlivaw | TWITTER | STEAM ID | NEVER FORGET
But for me, it was a legacy thing to get it on PS3

Yeah. They cut things up pretty well.

I usually name my samurai Kurisu, which is my name in Japanese.
Steam Support is the worst. Seriously, the worst
Which is a great name if you've seen the films.

Because that just means I'll have to buy the game even sooner.
*Still angry Shinobido never came Stateside*
And then dual swords called Souseiji (Twins) at some point too.
Or is it Majin's minus the symbol? (Half-black, half-white)

So that means you're playing the game the game blindfolded, right?

Is this series really so low budget that people have stopped caring about the sequels?
