Xbox 360 and Playstation 3
$49.99!

So what are these Way of the Samurai games, anyway?

These games have always been high on the Awesome Scale and low on production values, but I hope I'm not the only one who actually balled his gnarled gamer claws into fists, raised his arms above his head and yelped for joy at this news. Way of the Samurai is easily one of my favorite franchises on the PS2, and after so long with no news of a localization, today this gets dropped!

The method of publishing is a little... odd, however. Two different companies will be publishing the respective PS3 and 360 versions. Agetec will be bringing it to the PS3, and UFO Interactive is handling it on the 360. I haven't seen any confirmation on Agetec's site, but the news did just drop today.

Both versions are set for additional content, simultaneous release and a pretty sweet price, this October. For me, this is the best localization news since Demon's Souls.

The Butterfly Effect
With over 15 different endings, every action you take will cause a change of events to occur, allowing for multiple outcomes and replay-ability. Every action has a reaction and the following consequences open up new paths to explore.

Weapon Customization and Abilities
Craft your own unique weapons from over 200 different parts and materials, creating the ultimate weapon that suits your taste and fighting style. Create lethal blades, spears, pole axes and more while discovering new abilities and skills with increased use. Become a master of one or of many!

Reward System and Samurai Rating
Performing different feats will reward a player with Samurai Points and a Title, which in turn will unlock new features and characters within the game. Fight honorably in the way of the samurai, live your life as a bandit or strive to uphold the government. These choices will net different points and values, encouraging multiple play throughs to unlock all features and content.

The Pen Can Be Mightier Than The Sword
Fight your opposition with force or take the diplomatic route, using subtle gestures like the unsheathing of your sword. With extensive dialogue tree, weapons combo systems and more, this hybrid title delivers on multiple fronts.

Screenshots to prove how ugly it is:

954484_20081008_screen002.jpg

When people say it looks like a PS2 game, it's kind of hard to argue beyond the resolution and some of the textures. Eugh. Can't wait!

Out now! (Canadian retailers aren't stocking it - gotta' import from Amazon.com.)

Have the improved on the basic flow of the game? I seem to recall the first game being awesome, but very confusing in terms of flow of events or even what to do half the time.

I've read zero import reviews of Samurai Dou 3 - but I think everyone is supposed to fuck things up royally the first time you play these games. They're short, sweet, and designed for multiple New Game+ playthroughs. It's like groundhog day, but with kimonos, silly hair and a blade.

Chance. It's internet hug time. Because you have made a great night wonderful.

I think I might play the original a few times through soon, since I haven't played it in a while. (And I've never found the Sequel.)

Sequel is better in some ways, a lot worse in others. If I could only have one of them, I'd go with the original. In a nutshell: 1's story is a helluva lot better-made and the experience is much more focused, 2's swordplay is easier (-/+ depending on your taste) but also much more stylish.

    Also - highfive!

Did the sequel still have the "If you die while playing, you lose your equipped swords" mechanic?

Because I remember going in on Very Hard or something to get a rare sword in the original and just about had it before dying. And the sword I was using was pretty rare and awesome as well. Gone. I'm not complaining per se, but goddamnit.

    Such sadness.

God, I loved Way of the Samurai 1 and 2, though I love 2 a little more. Better narrative and slightly easier to get into the swordplay.

And yeah, that looks like a highly polished PS2 game. I LOVE IT!

    In English? Awesome

I just need to get a 360 or PS3 by October

I don't know how that's going to happen, but I will make it so, because this series is cool
it'll probably be a PS3, much to my chagrin. Gotta get a Blu-rey player at some point, I suppose

Ain't nothing wrong with a PS3, Olivaw. Outside of the high initial cost of entry, it is a pretty sweet system, and my good times are very comparable to the good times I had on 360.

File this under rumor for now, I suppose:

I just did some poking around on (PS3 publisher) Agetec's forums, and found a thread regarding WotS3. It seems Agetec isn't going to confirm the news until the end of this month - but to be honest, the fact that the News section of their website hasn't been updated since 2008 is a little... smelly, to me.

Oh god, don't let it just be a rumor!

I may have to look at this. Loved the first way of the Samurai(though I still don't think I should have paid full price for it). My only real complaint was the length and lack of voice-acting(though I understood the length was on purpose. Played through the game like 15 times anyway).

Well yeah, if the game were 20 or 12 or even 8 hours long, it would be much harder to want to get all the endings - but given that WotS 1 can be beaten in like, 90-120 minutes, it makes it much easier (and more fun) to go in and try different things.

Also: I just watched... the worst video review ever. Seriously awful.
I'm not talking about story spoilers or anything - this guy is the most boring, moronic "reviewer" I've ever happened across. He needs to shut the fuck up about textures - point out that they're not too hot to me once, but you don't have to do it for every patch of ground, stone wall and river you come across. No, man - WotS isn't "like Fable". No, man - you don't need a red glow around your character if he's evil!

Here's the link if you want to see it - but I highly suggest turning the audio off. Most interesting part? There's a move where you can kneel to show deference to an NPC. As well, the awesome music is definitely back.

It's nowhere near as good, but if you get an FAQ and have patience, you can squeeze a lot of entertainment out of it. The game does absolutely nothing to tell you what to do or when to do it, so using a walkthrough isn't exactly cheating

Also it includes the most badass of sword styles, Fencing

    FUCK YES.

I've been waiting for a next gen Samurai sim, and WOTS is as close as you're going to get with that.

Thankfully, at the upper levels of sword play, you get much closer to one hit kills and can do some really spectacular stuff.

Just because evidence for the PS3 version was a little limp:

UPDATE: While Agetec has not yet officially confirmed that it is handling the PS3 version, many online retailers have begun listing Way of the Samurai 3 on PS3. G4 shows it as published by Agetec, while EBgames.com has both versions listed as published by Tommo. Before you think this is all too fishy, Tommo seems to be a distributor that handles games from both Agetec and UFO Interactive. And Tommo's main page again confirms that WotS3 is multiplatform with this pic:

I'm pretty siked that this franchise is continuing. I remember playing the original quit a bit. The graphics look totally passable to me but then I haven't really had much play time with current gen consoles so my standards are pretty low haha.

Remember that western involving a Samurai? Was that a spin off of this or was that an entirely different franchise?

If it's anything like the earlier games, there are a ton of different endings and each gives you a different rank. "Master Samurai" or whatever the best rank is is usually reserved for being a selfless hero, defending the townspeople, and only fighting when absolutely necessary. No hunting down ninjas or rogue Samurai in the dead of night to collect their weapons.

What it really comes down to, though, are each town's factions. In WotS 1 and 2 there were three - the powerful bad-slash-good guys, the powerful bad-slash-bad guys, and the townspeople.

Each faction has its own "perfect" playthrough that results in its ending - but if you support anyone but the townspeople, the town ends up fucked. Each of the basic "perfect" playthroughs can, of course, be played imperfectly - and so you end up with a whole bunch of alternate endings.

Heck, in 1 and 2 you could walk into town, walk straight through, and leave - bam - ending.

I think it's early in the month, lemmie check... Ding. October 13th.

Also, there's a bonus you may want to ask in-store about, as (from what I've heard) not every GameStop is even aware of it:

"Reserve Way of the Samurai 3 and receive a GameStop exclusive DVD entitled, "The Art and Strategy of the Warring Sates." This DVD includes a digital art book and strategy guide for Way of the Samurai 3. Available for in-store customers only, while supplies last. Not available for in-store pickup."

That's if, of course, you were planning on preordering.

Master Samurai was pretty hard in the first game - you basically had to play both sides against each other while defending the townspeople and eventually uniting both gangs against a common enemy

This is exceptionally hard to do and requires you to perform a very specific action at each point in the story or the whole chain of events collapses

Way of the Samurai 2's was even harder, in that you basically have a time limit to figure out what to do and the game gives you literally no direction whatsoever. I can't imagine playing that game without an FAQ
