I just moved to a very bicycle friendly town and would like to buy a bike.
I'm willing to drop a decent chunk of change on a bike (<$300), but I know nothing of bikes. So I have a few questions:
1. What style of bike should I choose? This will mostly be for commuting, but I like to be able to take it to some light trails around the hills. Comfort is important.
2. Which manufacturer should I choose? A few people have recommended Trek.
3. Should I buy a used bike? How about building one?
Less than $300 is not a lot. See if you can find a decent bike shop that sells second hand bikes, you'll get more for your money that way.
What do you mean by "trails"? If you're actually venturing of tarmac, but staying on groomed paths, I'd go with some kind of hybrid. If it's all tarmac, go for a road bike. Avoid suspension at this price. It's going to be heavy and not work very well.
Comfort is mostly a function of how well the bike fits, which is another reason to go to a bike shop.

I second the bike shop idea.
No matter how cool a bike looks, the amount in which it will punish your butt can only be determined in person.
