The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces is an arcade flight combat game developed by Project Aces, the Namco Bandai guys we can thank for the Ace Combat series. In the US, the game will be published by XSeed, who apparently are the new Atlus. I don't think a PAL release date has been announced, though.

As can be seen, the gameplay borrows a lot from Ace Combat. The analog gauges give a WWII feel, although other AC elements such as radar, points and targeting system are visible. The game retains the same primary and secondary weapons system as most flight games. Sky Crawlers also introduces a new gameplay element in the "Tactical Maneuver Command," by which you can automatically maneuver behind an enemy plane (a la Crimson Skies for Xbox) by remaining close to an enemy for a set period of time.
The style is obviously very much anime in cutscenes. I'd actually compare it to Valkyria Chronicles, a "World War" game set in an anime world. The story takes place in an otherwise peaceful world in which the people apparently crave war enough to force the government to stage a war for them. Looks like the story'll be traditional JRPG fare, or even that of the more recent Ace Combat games.
The game will vainly try to get you to sympathize with enemies through poorly localized dialogue, and the plot twist is that some mysterious enemy will stand in your way to replace your initial foe halfway through the game. Just know that I totally called it.
Controls:
The game uses the Wii Remote and nunchuk to simulate a traditional flightstick setup; the nunchuk is the flightstick, which controls roll and pitch and holds the weapons controls. The remote is the throttle, which controls velocity. And for those concerned with manipulating an ungrounded joystick setup, the game also supports Classic and GCN pads.
Also, while most new Wii games are $50, Sky Crawlers comes with a MSRP of $40. That leaves $10 extra to spend on Modern Warfare 2, Scribblenauts, or whatever else the kids are playing these days!

Also, the controls sound excellent. There was a very similar scheme in Heatseeker, and it worked very well. So I expect this to work just as well if not better.
Definitely on my to-buy list.

If I had Wii, I would probably buy the game.
This is based on (or a sequel or something) the recent film "The Sky Crawlers" by Mamoru Oshii, the director of Ghost in the Shell.
I just recently bought it on Bluray, but havent had a chance to watch it yet. Though it apparently has won several awards from what I heard.
Looks interesting, would have prefered it on PS3, but I might have to look into it on Wii.
Wii has win button? That's unpossible!
All the awards it won were for shit like "best technical development" or "best soundtrack." I made it about 20 minutes before throwing in the towel because of how tedious it was, and have yet to hear anybody praise anything about it aside from its technical merits.
So... yeah.
Needless to say, I'm rather disappointed.
You literally can trigger one of these things just flying past an enemy with out seeing them, and spamming the button, then holding down shoot as the cutscene begins so you'll be firing on their tail as soon as you come out of it, ridiculous.
They also attached a Combo system and such where you're suppose to be doing the TCM's all the time instead of any real dogfighting using the simple manual maneuvering thats more then adequate for playing the game.
So to put it simply, you can play the game and have fun and ignore the TCM's which are stupidly easy to do and are guarenteed kills for 95% of combat (aces you have to build up your TCM guage above a 1, so you need to stay close for like 2-3 seconds...). But if you ignroe the TCM's and their combo system, you'll not unlock alot of the extras like planes, skins, etc.
Many blowjobs for XSeed!
Has anyone seen the anime yet? I'm curious if it's worth a purchase.

Haha, me too. This game has a terrible title.
I never asked for this!

It's 2 hours of boredom interspersed with about 10 minutes of really impressive looking aerial battles. So if you've seen the movie trailer, you've already seen most of the best parts.
Also, EB has a listed US launch date of November 10. Amazon's date is January 5, 2010 for whatever reason; they'll have to understand if I order it elsewhere.
