Dana White to EA: Fuck you!

MeizMeiz Registered User regular
edited July 2009 in Games and Technology
"EA Sports told us, 'You're not a real sport,'" White said. "'We wouldn't touch this thing. We want nothing to do with this.'"

With EA Sports passing on the rights to the UFC's video game license, rival software company THQ elected to partner with mixed martial arts' biggest promotion. The company's first effort, "UFC Undisputed 2009," has shipped approximately 2 million units since its May release according to White, and the fiery exec is upset that EA Sports is now changing their tune with the recent announcement of a forthcoming "EA Sports MMA" title.

"We put our asses on the line, THQ and the UFC, to make a video-game deal in the worst economy in the world," White said. "We go out there and do this thing, and it's successful, and now [expletive] EA Sports wants to do a video game. Really? That's not what you told us a year-and-a-half ago.

"You told us you'd never be in business with us. They wouldn't even take a meeting because mixed martial arts disgusted them. This wasn't a real sport. Boy, they got over that real quick, didn't they?"

White views EA Sports' tactics with obvious disapproval, and he's made it clear that any fighter who signs over their likeness to the new project will be blacklisted from the UFC.

"I'm not tap-dancing around this thing or whatever," White said. "I'm telling you straight-up, I'm at war with them right now. That's how I look at it."

While former UFC champion and currently contracted UFC fighter Randy Couture is expected to appear in the EA Sports offering – a matter White says the company worked through with "The Natural" during a recent court appearance – the UFC president said not to expect that trend to continue.

"You won't be in the UFC," White said about additional fighters who sign with EA Sports.

YEAH!!!!

I love this guy.

The UFC has come a long way in order to achieve what it has over the years and to break into the video game market with such success with partner THQ is a testament to how wrong EA was to ignore this monster. I'm sure THQ's rather happy with this decision.

UFC gets exponentially more boring the more ground grappling becomes involved.

I just never understood the people that get pumped watching a match degenerate in to both fighters with their legs wrapped around each other for fifteen minutes before they get to a point where they can start throwing strikes again.

EA was being close-minded and condescending, but Dana White is (unsurprisingly) being a tremendous prick. He is an absolute dictator when it comes to the athletes in the UFC. His attitude has more than once cost them some fantastic fighters (e.g. Randy and Fedor). He also nearly threw John Fitch out for something really pedestrian a few years back (like refusing to sign a 10 year identity contract).

His general attitude towards EA is fine, but he shouldn't be punishing the freedom of his fighters.

It seems like he's making a mistake not taking advantage of this. If he only has a one year contract with THQ he should jump all over this EA thing. I mean, the exposure EA would give the UFC would be huge. Yeah EA is the devil and all that.

But just because they told him no the first time doesn't mean he should throw a shit fit. It was EA's right to say no to him. They were very wrong in their evaluation, but still, you can't get all pissy just because a company says no to you and then changes their mind.

He should be proud that he was able to turn the suits at EA around.

But 99% of people think watching chess is fucking boring.

I watched some UFC back during it's early years, and there were some moments which were awesome, but yeah over time it just became more about two guys hugging each other on the ground, which I'm sure is very intense and exciting for them, but I just hate sitting there watching it.

Hehe. I can understand how people could be interested in the outcome of a fight that degenerates into the ground fight, but how they enjoy watching it is beyond me. I understand that there is an incredible amount of effort and expertise that goes into winning a fight like that, and any one that's even atempted fighting like that could absolutly destroy me at the drop of a hat... but to me it still looks like two guys humping each other's legs for 10 minutes :P.

While white seems a bit imature on the surface, I know I'd certainly want to bury any company that told me my sport wasn't a sport, and told me that I and my fellow atheletes were beneath their atention.

I could understand EA saying they didn't see a market for it, or that they wanted their IP's to be focused of "field", "court", and "Fairway" sports, but if what White says they told him is even close to the mark, I think he's more than justified in trying to rally his industry against them in any way he can.

I guess it's the same with me and American Football, the game just seems terribly boring unless you're the one doing the passing/smashing/catching.

I seriously think the problem with UFC is that it's real fighting, and people have a problem with that. It's more intense than boxing, way more practical than wrestling, and I think it brings up bad memories of the PA'ers who've been beaten before. It can be uncomfortable to watch for some, but don't try to be macho and dismiss it by saying, "It's a bunch of people hugging each other". I'm not directing this at anyone in particular but grow up, srsly.

And I think America's economy was classified as such in some point in time.

Yeah, I think EA might try and offer a huge sum of monies to him. If anything, I'd like to see more UFC games from different companies so that the dynamics and gameplay are competent, and it's not one company trying to meet their own standards and raising the bar themselves over and over again.

Actually that's where the real skill lies. Any idiot can stand there and throw punches and kicks at another guy, the skill is when they're wrestling on the ground, searching for a moment of weakness to pin the other guy.

It's sort of like how slalom is pretty boring to watch compared to jumps or speed skiing, yet it's probably the most technical and exciting to watch as a skiier

This is something I can agree about, I don't like how they show their hardcore mentality and all the shitty logos that corporations have for the XTREME UFC ENERGY DRINK.

Wrestling does have it's moments, but I feel like they're more in a slump than UFC is right now. Not with their Video Game merchandise, just their star characters are getting older and the younger ones don't even have alter egos.

I can see where Football could be dull for folks used to sports with more constant action like Soccer (for as dull as it is to me, at least soccer always has something going on)

And as practical and real as UFC is, it still looks really dull to watch for a lot of us. Heck, I've never been beaten up so it sure doesn't bring up bad memories for me. I've even done some ground fighting as a kid as part of past martial arts classes (don't think I’m trying to pass myself off as some sort of expert fighter though, it was in late middle or early high school, and I only took them for about a year and a half). I enjoyed doing the ground fighting, and I understand why people do it, but why they watch it is beyond me. :?

Does that make THQ sloppy seconds? :winky:

@economy That probably makes more sense.

I've always thought of basketball as my favorite sport to watch, and I can't argue with what you like but I'm glad you're understanding.

I think one of the ways that UFC will garner more interest is through video games. We've all played a really good game we've liked before, and depending on their time period/techniques you can really dig into the background of what the game was based on. It's one of the reasons why I have more interest in basketball, was playing NBA2k9. I feel like some of the UFC game can translate to the real thing, since that's what it's imitating, but it's going to take some time and initial interest.

Dana White could sure speed up this process if he made a gazillion dollar UFC game with 60 characters, tag-team fighting, and hyper comboes.
