[MMO connection woe] Crashing both LOTRO and WoW on 2 different comps on a network

OK, this might be an interesting question for you guys, but I can't figure it out.

The problem
When I play LOTRO I sometimes cannot move and lose the connection to the server after ~2 minutes of standing still like that. The problem has surfaced during a few operations: selling trash to vendors, running an instance in a full group and alt-tabbing. I can log into other characters just fine and I haven't lost my internet connection at all. I just can't log into that toon for a while or until I reboot my PC.

The twist
My dad plays WoW on his PC upstairs, he experiences the exact same problem.

Additional information
We both use the same connection going through a router called 'KPN Experia Box', our provider is KPN. A Dutch provider, for those keeping track. Not known for fucking their customers over and a very DSL stable connection.

We both have PCs less than a year old, we run our respective games on ultra-high details.

This problem started for my dad a few months ago and for me this week.

If I need to provide any additional info I'll gladly do that.

My knowledge on this subject is rather flimsy, I can guess it's a problem with our router, but I have no idea how to properly fix it.

first thing I would do is start to ping some website like yahoo, google, etc. While thats running go and connect to your game and wait for the problem to occur. alt tab out and see if your pings were messed up at all, like a lag spike or destination unreachable.

If the ping is messed up, I'd try pinging from your dads computer, while you play the game, if the ping messes up here, it means the game is completely fuxoring the router and destroying your internets. Possibly time for a new router.

If the ping isn't disrupted, then try and find the game server you connect to (connect, alt-tab, TcpView to see where your games sending data, ping it, keep playing until it biffs). If the ping to the server has no problems, then its most likely the game itself choking and forgetting its on a network. If the ping also dies with the games connection, it might still be a router/ISP issue.

Does it happen in any other games, or maybe you have hiccups when browsing when it suddenly takes 10-15 seconds for a page to load at random times?

Last thing I can think of is something that happened to me. Apartment building had old wiring for the telephone lines, was getting random disconnects until I convinced them to replace the wiring, then no problems at all. If you have a phone you can plug into the dsl telephone line, listen for static and such, thats a signal your line is bad.

    Thanks, I'll try all that.

I never noticed the problem with whatever free MMOs I've been playing and the problem didn't occur with me on LOTRO until recently. Now that I think of it, I have been having problems with connecting to Youtube and sometimes Google, but I didn't get disconnected from MSN, so I wrote it off as something clogging the tubes.

I'll post an update once I know more.

Yah, the problems stopped shortly after and I completely forgot about all this. I hope you didn't anxiously await my reply for four months.
