Asurion does indeed cover all major US carriers, among others, and insurance claims are handled through them. If they are out of stock of your current phone or a refurbished replacement they sent you has failed then they may send you a different model phone. This is never a guarantee and no instore rep would (or should) ever tell you that you'll be getting a new phone because they have no way to tell.
Span Wolf what you fail to understand is that your phone does not cost $50. It is subsidized when you sign that service contract, the full retail cost (should it be damaged or lost mid-contract, in which case your only option would be to activate an old phone or buy one again) would be anywhere from $180-500 because you would not be eligible to renew your contract yet for a similar discount on a phone. Since you went through the life of your contract without making a claim is it cheaper to just upgrade? Probably. That's the risk you take when you add insurance, that you might be paying for coverage you don't need. How do you think they make a profit?
Your rage over this is profoundly confusing.
Because I asked how much it would be to just buy a new one and the guy said that my phone model was currently on sale and I could buy it straight up for 50 bucks. I understand subsidized costs, but that's not the issue here. This is just a situation that falls between the cracks.

An older model EnV.
Then he was either quoting you a subsidized, with-contract price or an out-of-warranty replacement fee price (which would have been a swap out for the same model phone through the standard warranty process with a flat $50 fee due to expired warranty or damage to the phone.) Or you were at an agent or reseller who was willing to pull some shit for you or pull some bullshit on you, one or the other.
No EnV model has ever been sold off-contract for $50 through any corporate store.

Yeah not at retail price. The only thing that makes sense is if you were at an agent and they were offering you some sort of boxed refurb or you were indeed being offered the new EnV3 as an upgrade which is currently $50

No it's the older EnV, I told you I had an older model EnV.
I had to deal with people moaning and complaining about the BIS outage all day.
I mean, I could understand if BES went down, because then every business exec in the country would shit a brick, but these people act like not getting to access data for twelve hours is a calamity of biblical proportion.
Also, on a side note, my favorite thing is how many BlackBerry users don't know what Desktop Manager is for until right after they get their first JVM Error.
RIM wants to lock their shit down (in terms of data), and that's fine, whatever. But when the service goes down twice in two months, it kinda sucks.

Data access going down for a cell phone is bad, but it's not that bad. I feel bad for you having to put up with that nonesense/complaint, though. I had internet go down completely on a "maintenance" day that Comcast NEVER told anyone. The night I was up finishing a group project via google wave. I was NOT HAPPY. THAT is a misfortunate/disaster. Not having internet/data on your phone, however, is "chill the fuckout, it's ok", imo.
^ If you have no idea what screen I'm talking about.
The iphone isn't overheating (I keep my house at a balmy 15 degrees C, much to the aggravation of those who visit me.) But any other thing could be wrong with it. I'm assuming this is just a problem with the thermistor, possibly from condensation inside the unit. It's never been wet, but it's been very damp and foggy for a few days and the back of the iphone is cracked (and the crack, in a way difficult to explain with text, is under tension against itself holding itself open) so moisture has a way in.
I might just pick up a 3GS. I mean I don't have much choice when this is my only telephone. Stupidly, I sold my w810 a while ago.
edit: unless there's some hot new Rogers-in-Canada supported phone I should get instead of a 3GS. Tethering support is the only prerequisite.
If it goes to Verizon, that would be huge. I still have a year left on my Sprint contract (which is fine because I'm saving money by not having a data plan), but when it's new phone time next year I could go to Verizon and choose between the iPhone, Pre Plus, Droid, Nexus One and a whole bunch of other phones that aren't out yet.
I just picked up a Droid Eris yesterday. It's amazing how this time last year, I hated Verizon because their phones were shit and now they've got so many awesome ones.
More realistically though, I would see the iPhone going to TMobile since they use the same radio hardware for most of the network and converting the hardware to them would be easy enough. Plus, they are small enough that Apple could probably easily bargain with them to get the lion's share of the profits with the promises of all the sales.
I have a question about Iphones that I'm hoping someone can answer. I currently have AT&T, I have a blackjack 2 and an unlimited text and data plan. My friend just got a 32Gig 3gs and said I can have her 16gb 3GS if I want it. I want it since the price(free) is right, but my question is will I need an Iphone specific data plan or can I just continue to use my current plan?

I didn't even know what the fuck and avitar was until about 5 minutes ago.
If you're paying $30 for your data you might be fine I think.
I'm paying 30 yeah. I guess either way its fine though. If there's some Iphone specific plan it will likely replace my current one for like 10 bucks more a month, which I think would be worth it.

I'm eyeing up either that or the bravo as my next phone.
Edit: Although I am interested to see what MS pulls out of the bag with winmo7. Microsoft are generally at their best when put under serious pressure by their competitors.
Anyone got recommendations for good (non iphone) smartphones for sale in the UK, either available now or in the next 3 months?
How much are you looking to spend, contract/handset only, and what network are you on/want to be on?
Oh yes, details
Right, well I currently have a SE C905, which is on a plan that give me far more minutes/texts than I ever use now + basically unlimited internet via T-Mobile - this I think costs about 27.50 per month. I chose this phone because it had the best camera at the time and ok surfing ability. The camera has been great and the surfing ok, but the battery life is terrible - I get 24 hours charge with moderate use (say a couple of calls, a few texts, use or radio/sound and incidental use of internet). I also find that the GPS (agps?)/maps is useful only in London, as it sucks the battery down so quickly that I can only use it sparingly if on prolonged travel where it isn't convenient to charge it up every few hours.
This time around I have slightly different requirements, as I don't care for the camera so much, as I picked up a DSLR. I want something with a great internet and music (radio too) experience. Touchscreen isn't essential or a deal breaker either.
I also wouldn't mind reducing my per month spend, if possible, as I mainly communicate via email/text these days and far less by phone than I used to. I am ok with sticking to the 25 to 30 pm rate though, if the phone is good enough. I also don't mind spending up to a hundred or so if it means getting a better phone. I don't mind switching networks from T-Mobile either
Let me have a look around, I'll get back to you probably later on tonight.
Edit: Being happy to switch networks is a good position to be in, because it means you basically find the best offer any other network is offering, and try to get your current network to beat it. Using that technique I got 600 minutes, 500 texts, unlimited internet and a nokia 5800 for free on the week it came out (Feb last year) for just £20 a month on an 18 month contract.
The big question re: which smartphone to get is what OS most attracts you.
Do you have any inclination to any of them? There's Android, which I am pretty set on for my next phone. Windows Mobile, Symbian, Maemo (which is basically just the N900 so far), then WebOS from Palm and the BlackBerry OS.
I could do a bit of a round up of them for you if you like (I've just done a fair bit of research into the smartphone market for my mum getting a new phone, so a lot of it is fresh in my mind)

Well if you don't mind, that would be great.
OS wise - I would prefer a later version of Android (they are up to 2.0 or 2.1 right?). Failing that, I guess I could try that new Linux flavour Nokia has (Maemo?), the latest Win Mobile, Web OS or Symbian.
I don't mind iPhones but they are a known quantity
Also: I do have a Nokia 5800 that I am looking to sell, it is one of the cheaper smartphones with lots of good features out there (decent web browser, built in turn by turn satnav), but it is far from flashy.

No hurry, I won't be buying for a month at least, due to plan expiry time.
I was just going to suggest the Nokia 5800. I have one and I'm really happy with it. I got it on one of the cheaper Virgin contracts because I use data more than I make calls or text.
The 5800 is a nice phone spoiled by the awful symbian S60 5th OS. I have the same OS on my Satio and it's been having a whole heap of problems.
The Nokia N900 is the phone of choice at the moment if you like to have a geeky custom to the phone. It is bulky and big though and is designed as a tablet computer first a phone second but has amazing firefox mobile browser with full flash support (although cant handle everything).
Otherwise there are many android phones around to look at decide which is best for you

I am routinely shocked that there are fanboys of our company.
I'll give them credit for making turn-by-turn GPS navigation free.
