I want to hook into my current existing voice plan without altering it or making it any more expensive, get the $29.99 per month data plan, and the $1.99 per month warranty, and get the phone itself for no more than Verizon's discounted price for new contracts and upgrades(not counting any upgrade fees required to get to that point).
Well then that's all easy except for the upgrade part. If no line on your account is eligible to upgrade you're going to have to sweet talk a customer service rep (over the phone is your best bet since stores have become much stricter) into doing that for you. It's not a hard sell since you're adding $30 in data, and over the phone should get you the instant rebate pricing if you're going directly through Verizon ($200 out the phone door.) They'll likely try and tack on an early upgrade fee of $20 if you're ineligible which you'd also have to convince them to waive. Depending on your circumstances, account standing and history it ranges anywhere from very doable to get the fuck out.

I'd be totally fine paying an early upgrade fee alongside the discount-price, assuming it's a one-off fee.
Thanks for your advice. I'll check and see when the next upgrade's coming in, especially since my phone's still in great condition and thus could be hijacked the next time someone needs one. If not, then it'll come down to how much charisma I can bust out.
Question though, iirc Android doesn't support running apps on external storage, correct? Is all 8GB of this storage capable of holding apps, or is it like my Blackberry where I have a gig of internal storage, but only 50MB is there for apps? Or did Android 2.0 allow apps on storage?
I will try and figure this out for you tomorrow. If I don't forget.

Hmm, it would seem pretty odd if you couldn't run an app off the card, but I guess odder things have happened.
Argh, my phone's speaker seems to have broken and now I can't hear people when they call unless I have a headset plugged in. The bloody headset jack seems to be degrading too, so it sort of pops out regularly. Note - Sony Ericsson can make good phones, but their proprietary headphone jacks can die in a fire
That means your headset jack is broken, your speaker is probably fine. If your phone's under any sort of warranty call/visit your service provider to get it repaired. Even if not, call/visit your service provider, they might be able to do something for you.
Yeah I am sure there is an easy fix but i voided the warrenty 4 weeks ago when I had the phone unlocked so i could use it on a long overseas holiday. It was a calculated risk as the plan expires in 2 months and i planned to replace the phone
I think actually the microphone is broken and the jack is broken. Spoke to T-Mobile today by phone and they are not planning to let me upgrade ahead of plan, although I'll try my luck with an in store visit before I give up on that. Another other option is to repair it - but that could be about 35 pounds. The final option would be to use an older phone that still works, until the plan gets to the upgrade stage
Couldn't you buy a prepaid T-mo phone and swap your SIM into it?
Yeah I could, which is also what T-Mobile suggested. I think I'll see if my old K810i still works though. As I'd rather not spend any money on this if I can. Also, my phone is my music and radio player (as well as being a good portable point &click camera), so it is more than just a phone.
The iPhone 4G has been leaked. Details on Engadget and Gizmodo, but the gist is: slightly smaller higher-res screen, front-facing cam and higher-res main cam, dual mics for noise cancellation, higher capacities, larger battery, and microSIM slot.

Apps autoinstall to the internal ROM only which is 748 MB. As Engadget mentioned, programs that use additional storage on an SD Card for app information have issues recognizing the built in 8G as available. Even the preloaded HTC Footprints program. Confirmed as of right now just for you, buddy.
Edit: It seems footprints only refuses to launch from the car home without a MicroSD. Works just fine when launched from the app tray or other shortcut.
Any chances for some kind of adapter? I'm currently with Sprint, but my wife and I are planning to hop to ATT in the August timeframe. She wants the iPhone and we're both ready for a more reliable carrier (I used to have Verizon, but one of my greatest sticking points with them -- lag on handset upgrades (i.e. they get the newer technology/handsets late or not at all) -- hasn't changed).
However, I've got some specific requirements thanks to work. I need access to a phone without a camera. I know I can get a GOPhone handset and swap SIMs, but if I wait for a 4G iPhone, that no longer becomes possible.
Yes, I understand the iPhone 4G likely won't be out by August anyway, but I'm looking ahead.
Well, from the looks of things, you could probably trim down a normal SIM to fit the slot (http://bit.ly/9C3BZ7). But I would do more research before getting out your Dremel.
So I pre-ordered my Incredible today. $150 at Best Buy, no mail-in-rebate shenanigans. My contract should be around $75 after tax, which makes me cry compared to what Sprint offers as a vendor contract for people in the computer department. 25% off the plan and 20% off the data isn't terrible for Verizon though, I guess.
I'm looking forward to having a real phone finally, though. I'll need to prepare for my changing of the guard, where I'll use my Dare to take a picture of my Incredible while the Incredible takes a picture of the Dare.

?! Verizon seems to be getting some of the best handsets recently. What handsets are you looking at? They've gotten the Droid, Incredible, Nexus One soon, Pre Plus, Kin, and a few others announced coming soon and others rumored to be coming soon. With the exception of the Pre on Sprint first and Nexus One on TMobile first, I thought Verizon had finally started to compete in modern handsets and features.
Not to mention they are rolling on LTE first, though that won't matter for another 2 years or so.
What's the most affordable way to get on Android on Verizon?
We are most likely going to jump ship from Sprint to them as they are getting some nice phones. How can we save the most money if we do? Voice minutes means almost nothing to us, data and messaging is our main concern.

Wait for the next inevitable "buy one get one" deal and pick up the Incredible. Get a Family Share (I'm assuming by "we" you mean 2 lines) Talk and Text plan for 700 minutes for $100, then two data plans make it $160 a month ($30data/line).
Not sure whether to ask this here or in HA, but what the heck...
I'm trying to get the photos I saved in my phone's microSD card onto my computer. My provider's website says that I have to get some proprietary software from the cellphone maker for my computer to do that, which annoys me. Is there some kind of free software that would be able to read my cellphone's microSD while it's still sitting in my cell phone? If there isn't, I can always just get a microSD/USB adapter and download it to my computer that way... right?

I'll be fine, just give me a minute, a man's got a limit, I can't get a life if my heart's not in it.

If you just plug in your phone you'll probably get an option to just act as a USB disk.
I'm using a Motorola KRZR with Koodo. It has two options under USB Settings: "Modem/COM" and "USB Drive". If I set it to Modem/COM my computer doesn't recognize it as a USB stick at all. If I set it to USB Drive, it will recognize it as a USB stick, but the cell phone's screen says "Switching to USB Drive; Files on memory card are not available now." Browsing through the stick in My Computer reveals no picture files at all, so I'm guessing it's telling the truth. Also, my phone doesn't charge in USB mode for whatever reason.
Another odd thing: I put that very memory card in my brother's camera and took a couple of shots, then put it back into my phone. Those photos I can see when my phone is connected in USB Drive mode. I can also browse though all the photos I took with the phone using my phone's viewer itself, so the card itself is good, and the pictures are being saved to it. Very odd.

Why not take the card out and slot it into a cheap reader?
Because I'm laaaaaazy! :P Yeah, it looks like I'm going to have to do that, I think. Oh well, they're pretty cheap these days.

Do capacitive touch screens work well with people suffering from sweaty palm disease?
With my mildish case, they work well enough. Just make sure to frequently clean them. ;P

I've been getting into Apple hardware recently, and I'm most likely getting an iPhone. I see there's 2 models available - the 3G and 3GS. From looking around, I saw the 3GS is about twice as fast as the 3G, are there any other big differences?
Faster, more RAM, better overall. If you have to buy right now, get the 3GS, but honestly you should wait until June and get a 4G or a cheaper/used 3GS.

I won't be getting one for a while. By the time I get one, the new one will probably be out, so I'll just get a plan with that instead.

Also the 3G misses out on some of the bigger updates in the upcoming iPhone OS 4, including multitasking. Either the 3GS or the newest version in June will be worth your while, like Fats says it's worth waiting until the new one comes out, even if it's just to get the 3GS at a better price.

Sprint is significantly cheaper than Verizon. There are definite benefits to being on Verizon, but price isn't one of them.
I am extremely happy with my HD2, which I got a few days ago. Just playin' Donkey Kong Country, rockin' some Worms World Party on the train, usin' Opera for my interwebs. Shit is bangin'.
I don't know, man. Some kind of Windows Mobile version? It feels a lot like Worms 1, but looks a lot like later versions of Worms. It's still fun wormsy fun.
