Just got back from the Palm Developer Days, during which they were nice enough to give out contract-less Verizon Palm Pre Plus' to every attendee. Pretty nice deal for a $25 fee to attend and a couple six hour drives for me. I don't actually develop for WebOS, I was going with a friend of mine who does, but I'm certainly on board now. So far I'm in love with the thing, I'm not even going to set it up with a 3G plan any time soon, though I will miss the mobile hotspot feature.
Here's hoping that the new rumors about Palm don't come to fruition.
So... for you sprint users here, how do you feel about your carrier? I've been with AT&t for the last two years, and absolutely hated it. My contract is about to expire, and I'm moving to the San Diego area for grad school, so I'm weighing my options.

As a San Diego resident I find the service is excellent, customer service has improved drastically from what it was a few years ago and prices are cheap as China. Do it to it.
It's very much YMMV. I've had more dropped calls in the past 2 years on Sprint while on-the-move than in all 6 years combined with Verizon. I travel to Navy installations (in the US incl. Hawaii), where Sprint is supposed to have the best coverage. I'm based out of the DE/Phila area and even there I will get the odd dropped call as my phone attempts to hop towers, or something else asinine.
Now granted, I have to use an older model phone because I can't have a camera (let me tell you how hard it is to find a new non-camera phone; especially when manufacturers are adding more cameras), so that may have at least something to do with it. My wife has a bit more modern of a phone but she is constantly running into problems.
I'm actually planning to move to AT&T.
I will give a big +1 to Sprint's customer service. Every location I've visited has been a rewarding experience. The reps actually know their stuff, and I don't get a run around if I'm on the road and need help. Plus, they don't heckle people in shopping malls.

I haven't had a dropped call in 2 years with Sprint, and I was never really a fan of theirs before I switched. But the coverage is great, customer service is much better than when I was with Verizon, 4G is coming in the next few months (if you live in the right city), and they have some pretty good phones coming up for sale. Oh, and the service plans seem to be better than the other major carriers, price wise.
Like you I hated AT&T, and also hated Verizon when I was stuck with them, but Sprint has been good to me.

I'm a huge Sprint fan, particularly after coming to them from Cingular/AT&T. Their network is solid, I never have dropped calls, and I get data and voice pretty much everywhere. Honestly, Verizon has a better network, but you're paying a lot more for it. Sprint is a good value, and if you want to sign up online and get a discount, go to www.sprint.com/everythingplus and enter [email protected] and 383 (he's a Sprint executive who put his info out there for people to use). You save about $10/month on plans.
I've been with Sprint for 4 years and unless I went somewhere where I got terrible coverage, I won't change. THey have some fantastic phones (I have the Pre) and even more coming out.

That's a nice tip on the discount. I wonder if it's one of those things where I would have to cancel my service, and re-sign up to take advantage (with the only issue being I'd have to get a new phone number issued). I'm looking at upgrading to the HTC Evo 4G when it comes out, depending on pricing.
Just two more months until we can ditch Verizon and switch to Sprint - get a 23% discount through work. It's just so much better of a deal than Vrz (even with their 19% discount)... around $100/mo for two free Pixi's or whatever's best for us in a few months, unlimited data, text, whatever... We used a combined total of 180 minutes in the last month so don't need many. With Verizon, those same features would be over $150 (have to have two data plans for the two phones.... though if we stuck with Verizon I'd probably get a free crap phone with no data..)
Yeah, we'll probably be looking at something different now that we can both get a data plan and not get raped by the Verizon map. She just had her heart set on the Pixi (for whatever reason).
It's adorable but it is sloooow. I'd say If no new equipment comes out that interests you before you switch consider the Pre or the Hero pending speed increase/typing responsiveness improvement from 2.1 upgrade coming early May if it was the size that was attractive. Even without the Hero crushes the Pixi,hardware/software keyboard preferences aside.

I got some pretty good advice on buying a TV from this forum last year so I thought I'd ask again for Cell Phones.
I've used prepaid ones but at work they offer a 20% monthly discount if you have Verizon. The local Verizon branch guy was trying to sell me on a couple of phones but one that stuck out was the HTC Driod Eris. I thought it looked kinda cool and for 2yr plan it was going to cost me 50$.
I get paid tomorrow and was seriously considering going in tomorrow and getting a phone. I figured its time for an upgrade, my current phone is really basic, it actually only costs me 10$.
I'm wondering if its a good phone though or if I should get another Verizon phone. That 20% sounds cool but I also need to get a data package it seems. He also told me Verizon has the best coverage where I live and work but I'm pretty sure he was just trying to sell a phone.

Data is going to be $30 extra a month on any Android phone. As far as they go, I've seen one dude who likes the Eris, a ton of people who like the Droid, and the Incredible looks incredible. I personally would go with the Droid or Incredible.
Well yeah he was trying to sell you a phone, he gets paid based on his sales. If you're considering Verizon they do have the broadest nationwide coverage but the plan for a smartphone is going to end up between $66-82 depending on your texting preferences (after discount and assuming the 450minute plan based on your current plan.) The Incredible comes out tomorrow, so whether you prefer all touch or full keyboard, that and the Droid are absolutely fantastic. Once you start using web/nav/apps everywhere you'll wonder how you lived without them. Up to you if that's worth the extra dough though. Remember on contract these phones are going to be with you every day for at least a year. If you skimp out based on up front price (monthly is understandable) you're going to regret it.
Oh snaps good thing I posted, I didn't even realize a new phone was coming out tomorrow and when I asked him if something new was coming out he said he didn't know.
I'll do some more research on it but it does look pretty cool from my early google-fu.

Yeah after looking more at things at work (hurray slow days) I'm liking the Hero. We stopped at Best Buy (just to put things in our hands, after we assured the Best Buy guy he wasn't getting our monies) and while the Pre would be cool I don't really like the Pre/Pixi keyboard. She liked how the Hero looked (didn't know if she liked a touchscreen keyboard... when right afterwards we went over and she gushed over the iPad... Hmph). Anyway, I like the looks of the Evo, even though it'll be more than I want to spend. I bet the Hero will be cheaper at the point the Evo comes out anyway (around when our contract's up)

Continued support for first gen android stuff looks iffy to me. They have not come out and said they won't support X phone anymore but a lot of up and coming software is reliant on Android 2.1 (Which hero will get) and 2.2. Also certain features are requiring faster processors. I'm drooling over the Evo myself, but then we have yet to see what Intel will do with the Atom 1.66 either. Sadly my Moment is in with the first gen pack, but even the Nexus One and Droid will be looking old very soon, Android is asploding.
From what I've read, people generally love the Android handsets, but lament not being able to upgrade the software (unless I'm reading things wrong); which is amusing for an "open source" OS.
No, people can upgrade, but there are no guarantees that the phone will work flawlessly as custom ROMs are not officially supported (for obvious reasons).
I thought one of the gripes of the Nexus One and the Droid was that they run 2.0.....? (just trying to further some discussion, and my knowledge; not argue)
It's not like having 2.1 automatically cripples all handsets running 2.0. People just want the newest, best experience possible. What happens is that high-end Android terminals, usually made by HTC, take longer than usual to receive an update due to the way they treat their OSs. They use a custom UI, nicknamed Sense, which is meant to complement the base UI while adding functionality and fun, little quirks, but unfortunately it's always the cause for any and all delays of new updates.
It doesn't mean that people who own the Nexus One or the Droid can't just go ahead and use a user-made Android 2.1 ROM, though. But it will lack Sense, which some might consider a drawback (not to mention a far-from-perfect experience, given that the ROM might not be tailored for handset X or Y).
Hello cell phone thread. I'm hoping some of your could mushroom stamp some knowledge on me.
My contract runs out in July and I'm looking forward to replacing the phone I'm currently using (Motorola Razr V3 .....i know, i know). I'm currently on T-mobile and considering switching carriers based on the small phone selection.
So... things I want:
Physical Keyboard
Android OS
Something that won't randomly turn off
Looking at T-mobile's site, the only phones that meet the above criteria are the T-mobile G1 and the Motorola Cliq. I hate the design of the G1, and I hear the Cliq has a problem where it randomly turns off. Can anyone verify how prevalent that is?
Also, the Cliq uses the Blur thing, and I'm not sure how much I'd like that. I don't really give a rats ass about facebook, and the last thing I want to see on my phone is some asshole's status pop up saying, "OOH MY KITTY JUST POOPED RAINBOWS." Fucking no. I know I can move all that shit to another home screen, but if anyone can come in and reassure me that the Blur isn't as retarded as it seems then I might consider getting one. The shutting down randomly is more of a concern for me with this phone though.
The Motorola Droid seems more up my alley, and I really like the way it felt in Best Buy. How difficult is it to switch carriers (to Verizon)? Can I keep my old number? Anyone feel strongly one way or another about the Moto Droid or the Verizon network?
Sorry if some of these questions are kind of basic. This is the first time I've put any thought into a phone and I really want something awesome. I'm so sick of texting on the Razr.
Also... I'm 26, and live in Florida, if that makes a difference.
I had a droid on verizon for a month. it was a nice experience, but it is significantly more expensive than T-Mobile.
Also, the keyboard on the droid is utter crap. I never thought I'd get a phone without a physical keyboard, but honestly, by the end of my month with the droid, I was pretty much always using the on-screen board anyway, which made switching over to a non-keyboard phone pretty easy.
It's for new customers. And, they usually make you wait a couple weeks before putting the newest of the new phones as available on that plan (unless you're upgrading).
Did they ever update the Moment's firmware? it seems absurd that a phone running vanilla android would take this long
the keyboard on it is indeed great, though, and honestly, I didn't find it all that bulky for the couple of months I had one. I think it looks bulkier than it actually is.
it's bigger than a droid, but smaller than a breadbox.
I think Sprint is waiting to update it alongside the Hero. As far as I am awar,e though, no Sense UI phone has been given a major firmware bump in the past, so god knows when that will actually be. Kind of absurd to keep the Moment waiting, at this point, since it is running vanilla 1.5.
Then again, I heard Samsung implimented somethign strangely (I know it took longer than it should have for folks to root it) so maybe Samsung is the real hold up.

Dam, oh well. I went through the process just to check it out and it's legit. The All data family plan that usually goes for $129 was only $109 with your method. Pretty significant savings. I quit before I got to the part where they told me it wouldn't work if I was an existing customer, but I am eligible for upgrade as of February so maybe I can sweet talk them. I've noticed Sprint is pretty good about working things out with me, i.e. lowering a bill, lowering a plan price, blah blah.

Android 2.1 is coming in the next couple weeks. There are leaked 2.1 ROMs already though. I like it, but would advise looking at the new stuff coming out. Especially if you can wait for the EVO to hit.
I also don't think it's bulky at all, It has some nice features like the hardware camera button, which i will miss. But I will likely upgrade to the EVO when it comes.
While 2.1 is smoother, nicer looking and has some neat features, really the better camera software and google maps are the only things that really impressed me.
substrata is a great live wallpaper. I can't imagine my phone without it, at this point.
really, just 2.0 felt a world of difference from 1.5, to me.
Oh, i forgot about live wallpapers, yea, I have a red cylon...something. Neat looking anyway. Oh, Redeye scanner.
Actually it's hard to say what 2.1 brought because I stuck a custom ROM on like 2 days later. The ROM I love. I can't wait for the real release, see what they do to it.

I bought the Cliq back in December, and I'm regretting the purchase. I haven't had my phone shut off randomly, but I've had the display turn off and on over and over while I'm doing stuff on it. It's also aggravatingly slow sometimes, and the time it takes to power-on is ridiculous. You're also right about Motoblur, it's nothing but an annoyance.
One more thing I also can't stand is that if you link your Facebook account, it automatically pulls everyone's contact information from your friends list...and I mean EVERYONE. People I will never ever call are in my phonebook, and I haven't found an easy way to delete them without removing them from Facebook. It's also a pain in the ass to add a new contact.
Overall, I'd say avoid it. Cliq is also locked in at version 1.5 of Android right now, which is retarded as well since Motorola is supporting newer versions on other models of their own damn phones. I'm patiently waiting for the new WinMo7 phones to be released so I can jump ship.
