Awesome weekend of fighting games. Even the ones I'm not into were fun to watch like the Soul Calibur/Tekken tourneys. Seeing the Hilde/cheap characters get beat down in SC and the crowd reaction was really fun. The pool play for SF4 was really intense as people were going all out showing little regard for the name brand players. Lots of upsets with underdog characters.

Also, I didn't keep up with the last two pages of this thread 'cuz I was so entranced by the Umehara/Wong final, but it is very obvious a couple of people posting here didn't watch much of Evo this weekend.

Those people in the background coaching the players as well as the crowd annoying some of you? That's been going on all weekend including in the finals matches for the various games, even to the point that they've had teammates sitting directly behind the competitors and visible in the streamed camera feed talking to the combatants as they play. The French guy who won the Soul Calibur tourney earlier talked about the crowd noise and said it was fantastic. Also Daigo said he LOVES the crowds. He said that they don't have this kind of atmostphere in Japan, and while the crowds used to make him nervous playing in the USA, he's now grown used to it and enjoys the loud crowds. "Dan from Japan" made similar comments.

The players themselves enjoy the rowdy crowd, just like at a basketball game or a concert by your favorite band. People on stage performing usually like to see enthusiam, oftentimes even when that enthusiasm isn't directed towards them a la the USA chants for Justin. Ever see your favorite athlete put down some smack during a road game to quiet the partisan crowd? It's awesome to watch and is an enjoyable part of competition. Dunno why some people here have a problem with it. It's not like you couldn't still hear Seth and company doing the play by play.

I think what is more wild about this video, is that Seth Killian was the guy behind the camera and he is now the head PR guy for Capcom America. How does that work. Be so good at a companies game that they just straight up hire you.

In years to come everyone will still be talking about not only the rivalry between these two great fighters but the fact they made this final what it was - The first and argubly the best 3-5 sets of Street Fighter IV action ever.

A couple people posted links earlier to some youtube vids. You miss the continuity and vibe from between fights, but it's still great stuff.

I know this is the SFIV thread, and I'm not really into the other fighting games, but I'd love to watch those Soul Calibur matches again, ditto the other SSFIIHDR and other stuffs. Anyone got any linkage?

The only way that Umehara v. Wong contest could have been better is if they went 1-1 on the last match and went into one final, epic round. Eee-wow.

I just watched the Grand Finals.

    Fucking hell.

That was some of the greatest down to the wire SF4 action I've ever watched. Such a shame though that Wong acts like a colossal cock everytime he won. Not that I'm a fan of emotionless Daigo either (though he smiled for photos!) but man, going around working the crowd up is just asking for karma to bite you in the ass.

But I'm still glad that Daigo managed to keep his cool when wong switches to a USA costume and has the crowd chanting USA USA USA.

    Really?
In what fighting arena in America is there not a rowdy crowd? Anyway, if anyone knows how to put it out of their mind and focus on the game it's Daigo.

Seriously, tourney hype and the crowd going nuts is one of the best parts about going to tournaments. Besides, in the interview after the Gamestop nationals Daigo said that the crowds got to him at first, but now he enjoys playing in an environment where everyone is going crazy and getting pumped up.

EDIT: And see? The crowd even got him to smile!

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks that Wong is FAR too cocky. I mean he walked off during a match and only just got back for the second round, that's just disrespectful.

There seems to be a huge amount of Ryu online at the moment, I mean more than normal. I even switched to him to see the game from his point of view. You really got to trick a good Ryu to get any kind of jump attack in.

Played against some random dude last night using Sakura and managed to pull off one set of reset tricks and then he messaged me afterwards with "someone's been watching evo footage."

I have noticed some more Balrogs roaming about than usual and they were obviously just learning how to use him (missing links and whiffing headbutt>ultra). I'm fine with that, anything to break out of the Ryu/Ken Fighter mentality.

when people figure out you can buffer SRK or SPD/Lariat or just throw through resets meh. My favorite reset is still j.HP (looks like that three punch move) then n.jump and start a new combo.

That's true for every reset. The odds are still in your favor for the mixup game. If you correctly anticipate and block a SRK and go for another combo (probably dizzy) or another reset.
