I just bought a brand new 15" Macbook! It's my first laptop! While I'm waiting for it to arrive, I figure it's a good time to replace my current everyday bag I carry all my shit in.
I want something I can wear everyday (laptop or not). I kinda like this bag, but I'm worried about the laptop fitting into it.
I like the green/brown colours and prefer canvas or something similar over a plastic/nylon bag.
Any other suggestions? Price isn't that much of an issue, but I'm thinking no more than $100-$150.
I've had one (though the smaller one) for my Macbook for almost 2 years and I can't imagine being happier with anything else. It's spacious, comfortable, durable, keeps the laptop safe, and looks great while not looking very obviously like a laptop bag. Mine's in olive green with an orange interior, which they don't seem to make anymore, but they're still offering a few good color choices.

There are a couple schools of thought here:
1) Buy a cheap, durable bag from a mass-shopping store (like Target, JC Pennys, Macys) for $30-$50 that meets your general expectations (for a canvas bag, this should be an easy find) and then get creative by adding your own logos/patches and such.
2) Buy a pre-logoed bag for $100-$500 that is exactly the same, but already has the images on it for you.
Personally, I bought a black canvas bag at a Gap while doing some emergency shopping (fell in a river in Maine, which unlike my native Florida, is not a refreshing experience in winter, Gap (ugh) happened to be right next to the river). Anyhow, hypothermia aside, they had a killer black canvas laptop bag for about $30. I then used some cloth-friendly spraypaints and sewing to put a design on it and stuck with it ever since.
In sort, if you want to save cash and have a bag that fits your own style, design it yourself. If you don't feel like you can portray the creative part well enough or would prefer a pre-existing design for more money, buy online.
I'm currently rocking a Dakine laptop backpack very similar to that. Lots of useful compartments (mine has insulation for canned drinks, and a place to put your power cord) and the laptop section is actually well padded (including the bottom, I can just drop it in from a fair height and not worry), which is not always the case. I like it a lot.
Is it generally a bad idea just to carry a laptop in a backpack (in my case, one of those LLBean backpacks everyone had 10 years ago), provided it doesn't bang around too much? I'm waiting on my 13" MacBook Pro to get here and was also wondering if I need to invest in another bag.

Oooh, I do kinda like that one.
Enc - That's a good idea. Maybe I'll get some patches and a cheap canvas bag for everyday use and a more 'professional' bag for client meetings (I'm a freelance web developer)

Yea I'd get a bag specifically designed for a laptop. I have 2 cases for my laptop, one is a messenger bag that looks a little more professional, the other is a backpack with a laptop sleeve that I've had for about 5 years now and is fantastic. Super comfortable and much easier to carry the laptop in.

I don't belive this hype, personally. I've used various backpacks and messenger bags to carry laptops since I got my first one back in 2000. I've never had any trouble with things getting broken, scratched, or any of the other horror stories I hear occasionally online. I've never seen a face-to-face problem like this that would have been different with a special bag (one of my buddies had his laptop bag tossed out of a car, nothing would save it).
Of course, this is anecdotal and dependent on how responsible you are with your things. I suppose someone who beats the hell out of their bags by tossing/throwing them etc. should probably go with something firmer and padded.

My thing is, that I've invested a significant amount of money on a computer that I expect to last 3+ years. Spending about $70 to buy something designed to protect it is absolutely worth it, and for the record, I'm super careful with it as it is. Do you really want your $1200+ machine just banging around loose inside a backpack?
If you can afford a laptop, you can afford a bag to protect it. imo it's the best investment you can make for that laptop.
I have a Ogio Hiphop from a couple years ago (based on recommendations from either here or SE++). I am very pleased with it but I don't like the current colours that are offered

My qualm is that most laptop bags offer little to protect the laptop. A layer of foam and a firmer bag makes sense, I get that. My bags have never been loose for the laptops I've had (usully 17 inch) and I carry a book or two with me at most times, shich offer a layer of padding in another chamber of the bag. I don't get nicks or such in my case because I don't put things in my bag that would nick my laptop. Will it be as good for the laptop as the laptop-designed bag should something crash into you? Of course not.
If that happens anyway, will it save the laptop? This is the part I don't believe. If something is going to damage your hardware, the bag isn't going to save it, regardless of how it's built. Or, if it will, the window of probability is so low that the odds are hugely against you.
I respect your reason, it's the very same reason I shelled out the coin for the warranty. I just don't see the bag as anything more than something comfortable to carry your things.

I got mine for $30 from Henry's but they go for more like $70-80 at Best Buy up here in Canada.

My girlfriend actually has one of these. She really likes it, but it's not quite my style.
DAMMIT.
I think this one is the winner.
