The Most Serene Republic's new album "...And The Ever Expanding Universe" was released on Tuesday and it is fucking amazing.

The Most Serene Republic is an "indie" rock band hailing from Milton, Ontario and consist of bass, guitars, drums, keyboards, trombone, violin, and vocals. The band is on the Arts & Crafts label along with acts such as Broken Social Scene, Stars, Bell Orchestre, Los Campesinos!, and Feist, and have toured with the likes of The Strokes and Metric.

I saw them on tour with Metric a few years back and they have become my favorite band. It's hard to put a label on them, but they've been described as symphonic, progressive, indie, wall-of-sound rock. Their music is pretty complex and often features complicated meters, but at they same time they have a definite accessibility and sing-a-long-ness to them. All of their albums are distinct but definitely them - I never feel like they're recycling old shit. The new one's produced by Dave Newfield, who's worked with Broken Social Scene and Super Furry Animals. You can definitely tell his influence on this album. It's a little less "difficult" and way more chill.

    Well fuck, I think they're pretty great. Sorry they weren't on the Twilight soundtrack, Frank Zappa is dead, Kid Cudi is shit, I'm not "catering to anyone" (really?), and there's a Grizzly Bear thread, just trying to share something new.

    Okay, but just curious how this is metal and any less indie rock than anything else?

    I hate genre labels, I wish people (myself definitely included) were better at describing music so everything could be taken for what it is and nothing else.

    Well, you could point to certain aspects of the music to typify genre or whatever, but it's probably more meaningful that they were part of the original thrash mode 25 years ago or so.

    they just toured, too

    Also our band name should start with a preposition and be all in lowercase and our first album will either be just a color (but a really weird one like puce or mauve), or some really long quotation from a book I had to read in 8th grade
