Meanwhile, this is wonderful
Especially that photo of the Suffragette holding the policeman in an armlock
If it's good enough for Sherlock Holmes it's good enough for me

No problem. It's a pretty neat little thing. Apparently when it was originally mentioned in Doyle's writing he typoed it and called "baritsu" which confused researchers for years as to what he had referenced.
t GG: Art of Manilness is pretty neat, s'where my interest in traditional shaving was piqued.
Also Robert Downey Jr is going to be performing some bartitsu moves in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie!
nah, I think she was cool at first but then she's just being polite and keeping her composure but she clearly recognizes how ridiculous it is

In which podcast did they talk about UFC? I remember it being histerical.
I do recall that bit about how the matches devolve into a ball punching endurance contest, but I can't place what ep it was. The bit is early on in the episode, if anyone wants to quickly screen the podcasts.

I should have mentioned that in my other post, sorry. It's in The Dangers of Exposure from May 9th, 2007. Kind of funny how we essentially heard this comic two years ago. Kind of proves why they don't make podcasts too much. I wonder how many repeat conversations they have, possibly without even knowing it.
UFC is so fucking boring. I mean, the comic just nails it: you watch these drawn out introductions, watching these guys train and listening to how they're blackbelts, and who their biggest rival is and what not... then the fight starts, and they fucking walk around each other, throwing weak punches and kicks that rarely, rarely connect. Then one of them either trips and falls, or one works up the nerve to try and tackle the other, and then it's two guys rolling around on the floor. And they all fight the same fucking way, regardless of what style of fighting they've "mastered".
And they're all uncharismatic meatheads. They don't even have personality or make the sport fun to watch like professional boxers.
Watching MMA or Boxing is like watching Golf. If you have no idea what's going on, it's boring as shit to watch. Just dudes hugging on the ground or standing over a 4 foot putt for 15 minutes.
If you've watched it long enough or done research or played it enough to understand it, you see what is actually going on and appreciate the physicality and mentality of it and the conditioning of the participants.
Yeah, you do need to understand it. Or be a total dumbfuck who just likes watching dudes punch/hug. UFC kinda turns me off because of the WWF drama they've tried to pull, and all the bullshit marketing in general. I think the early ones were the best, since there was more variety, but evolution of the sport does tend to have a homogenizing effect.
i actually find competitions within single martial arts more exciting to watch than MMA, generally speaking
like if i have to choose between UFC and like
pro muay thai
i will choose to watch muay thai instead
Sometimes it's a little annoying to see techniques where it's like "this is a silly technique that would never really work, but the rules of this contest make it work."
Like in Muay Thai, and I know this is more your area than mine, I feel really weird getting up my toes and putting my hips so far in to hold clench. The guy can't knee me, right, but if I tried that not in a MT match, I'm begging to get my legs grabbed and then get my head slammed into the pavement. Or in Judo, there are so many instances where it's super easy to knee or elbow a guy, but you're not allowed to, so you're able to approach techniques in ways that would get you hit in reality.
I guess if you get into "this is a sport/game, not a simulated combat" then it's not so bad. But then it becomes a game that looks oddly similar to fighting, yet it's not actually fighting. And then why am I not just watching Soul Calibur matches?
because of UFC's meteoric rise to fame, muay thai has gotten more attention from the mainstream public
because many UFC fighters have based their striking game on muay thai techniques and it comes up a lot
so you get a lot of fucking toolboxes who hear about muay thai from watching UFC and then are like "oh man muay thai is so hardcore i should learn that!"
and they are pieces of shit and they make every muay thai instructor frown
Where I go there aren't too many of them, but yeah there are more stupid-looking tattoos now than when I went to a school without Muay Thai and MMA classes. Most of the wannabes flake out pretty fast when they aren't badasses in two months, or when they get hit the first time, so that's good.
I know I haven't posted on this forum in years, but I got this awesome new job as a sport's writer with a focus in MMA. This works great because of the years of training I put into...
MMA is one of those things were it's a lot of fun to do but boring as shit to watch
I don't know, if you really know what you're seeing, I think it's not too bad to watch. Especially if you can learn from it. I agree that it's more fun to do, though, of course.
I maintain that a good boxing match beats a good MMA match any day of the week
A good match in either is fine, but sometimes with boxing the "you should get your ass beat for doing that" factor is stronger than MMA due to the more restrictive rules.
obviously a lot of people think so or it wouldn't have become so popular, so don't dismiss the entire sport if you saw one fight and thought it was dull. Give it a chance, I'd say.
Some fights can be dull. But that stands true for all of sport

But in sheer entertainment value, a good boxing match gives you more bang for your buck

That's right. Insulting the creators of the site where this board is based?! He's so flippant and edgy!

I got punched in the gut in elementary school and then the bully felt bad and helped me up and left me alone for the rest of the year
I guess that counts as something
