i don't get those guys that call boxing "inferior" to mma.
they're both sports with really specific rules. and in an actual street fight, a) you'd be stupid to get involved in one in the first place, and b) neither "style" is going to be best. you're not going to be rolling around on the ground with another dude trying to grab his beanbag.

God yes it annoys me so much when people go on about "fighting to hurt" and their percieved "superiority" of styles
In a life-or-death situation nothing is stopping me from throwing myself at my opponent and starting to hit in all the places I'm not supposed to
As if learning striking and stance via boxing means that everyone's crotch would have an invisible forcefield of RULES defending it in a street fight
So mma is all about two guys wanting to go for each others coin-purses and struggle to either punch or [other] them?
It didn't use to be. And then the Gracie family got involved and it turned into endless submission matches. You should have seen some of the early fights when they were throwing out just about everything from boxing, to kicking styles, etc. Turns out grappling works better in the style fights that most MMA support.

I've always found it amusing how people who are trained in martial arts go on and on about how their style is soooo much better. And then when they talk about mma they go on about how everything the MMA practitioner is doing is basically crap.
I have a friend whose a black belt in Tae Kwon Do (sp?) and she was substituting a PE class where the kids were learning MMA. She couldn't stop about how the kids didn't know shit and if they ever got into a real fight they'd get their asses kicked because the bulk of what they learned seemed to be coming from a "making things up as we're going along" school. Though their teacher apparently comes from a reputable mma school.

Funny, everyone I've talked to says Tae Kwon Do is a complete load, at last as it's taught in most American dojos

That's what I've heard as well.
MMA probably has the most credibility in terms of "what would work in a street fight", just because the very first MMA fights were just that. The rules were only added later, but what people currently call the "MMA style" is actually just the amalgamation of styles that proved to be most effective in that no-rules environment.

You guys are doing it already.
Not really. I'm just saying that there's no objective reason why boxing is an inherently inferior basis for learning a combat technique
Pointing out the faulty logic in the claims that X is true because Y is not allowed in regulated matches or whatever

It's because MMA is considered lowest common denominator to 'true martial arts' types.
The reason MMA style of fighting is so effective is because it basically eliminates style for function. It's based on doing as much damage to my opponent in as little time as possible with me receiving the least amount of damage in return. I guess that's not sporting enough for some people.

it doesn't prepare you for the real world of fighting wherein after you throw a punch the other person gets a turn

excellent
I wonder if Defender knows about that.
Defender is more of a Sweaty Dick Punching practitioner. His SDP skills are through the roof.

As soon as it went to what style is better and the defender signal got lit this thread lost.
