Troubleshoot my DVD burning issue! [UN-SOLVED]

I have a HP HDX 18 (X18-1102xx) with a DVD+RW drive. It will intermittently burn discs, but mostly, it fails. I think it may be a hardware issue, but as this is a new PC, I doubted that at first.

What happens (fresh wipe/reinstall of Windows AND Nero):

Open Nero Burning Rom
Create Data DVD
Select file(s)
Select Burner (if image recorder is selected)
Click "Burn" in dialog

The system will sit at 1% for 10 minutes, then tries to generate the DVD high-compatibility border, then fails. When I hit OK to go back to the program, it no longer recognizes the drive, only Image Recorder shows up.

I have a log I can post if anyone is familiar with these sorts of things. The reason I think it's hardware is that I've tried multiple discs and manufacturers - Sony Regular DVD+Rs, Memorex Dual Layer DVDs, Optiarc and "Great Quality" no-names. I'll get 1 good disc out of 3 or 4, which is horrible. Please halp!

    1. Try different software like ImgBurn.
    2. Probably hardware, that's a laptop isn't it.

Yes, it's a laptop, installing ImgBurn now.

    No games installed besides Steam/TF2.

Update - seems to work with ImgBurn, burned/verified one successful disc so far. Burning disc 2 - only error is that it couldn't lock the drive for exclusive acces (said another program was probably already using the drive) - I just hit "Continue" and kept burning.

*edit* Update - second disc burned had read errors upon verification. Going to try copying back to the PC after it's burned to see if the errors manifest there.

I don't mean to knock your choice of software

    Okay, then I will:
"Nero is shit, use something else."
    There, now we're both happy!

The basic OEM-bundle burning software isn't bad, it's when you get into Nero Ultimate Deluxe Platinum Bling Edition with Fuckmuppet CD Drivers that you hit the snags. But really, there's freeware solutions to do pretty much everything Nero does, and with better results if you're willing to put a bit of effort into it.

Nero Ultimate Deluxe Platinum Bling Edition with Fuckmuppet CD Drivers

    This is total sig material.

I did uninstall Nero completely - rebooted, then installed ImgBurn before I ran this. I rebooted and am burning another disc - we'll see if it works with a 2nd subsequent burn when this one is done/verified.

Tried looking at the Filter Driver Load Order to see what was hanging up. Here's exactly what it says:
    Upper Device Filter: [None Found]
     Upper Class Filter: [None Found]
                  Device: CD/DVD-ROM Device
     Lower Class Filter: [None Found]
    Lower Device Filter: [None Found]

Uh, this looks NOTHING like the one above. This is after I've burned 1 disc. Rebooting after each disc is a pain in the ASS.

Sounds like process of elimination has pointed to your hardware now. Might be time to bug HP.

Curses... didn't purchase the laptop in a store, received it as a gift. Can they run off the serial?
